You don't get to include that picture in such a sad story. I can not be the only person currently struggling with the laughter and sadness.

No. Bad newspaper including that photo. It's not just the hat, I'm not going "haha, foreign cultures are funny and weird". His head... his neck, why is it doing that? It's like someone photoshopped it to bring his head 6 inches closer to her. She looks like she's been forced into the wedding. But the hat is funny...

2013-03-03 03:45:44 PM
The tragic couple were only 21.  Probably don't have a car and like most New Yorkers have to rely on car service when a car is needed.  I'm a New Yorker and take taxis occasionally.  I try to  remember to wear seat belts but know a lot of taxi passengers do not wear them.  In this case, woman is seven months pregnant; should be an added reason to wear a seat belt. But her added girth and the couple's probable anxiety over her stomach pains in the 7th month of pregnancy was an added reason that seat belts were not worn.  The driver who was most likely wearing a seat belt survived.  Lesson to be learned.  Wear seat belts all the time when you're in the back seat!

So sad that they won't get to raise their son (if he survives).  But there's lots of other family members who will step up. And speaking of Orthodox Jewish families, "Fiddler on the Roof" is on Turner Classic Movies this afternoon at 4:45.  One of my favorite musicals.

Quite possibly, and may have had a mother besides (notice that the driver survived).
This "seatbelt crushing" idea is silly untrained armchair physics that only goes as deep as "but the seatbelt is squeezing her belly!" in its reasoning.  If the force of acceleration from being restrained by a seatbelt was greater than the force imparted by the pavement after being ejected from a car at high speed, seatbelts wouldn't be such an efficacious life-saving device.

An almost identical situation touched a coworker of mine. His niece and nephew-in-law died in a wreck. The infant was saved but died a few days later. This was two weeks after his grand-daughter was found murdered in her dorm room.

I cannot imagine having to cope with that level of grief. He seemed to be managing but ended up pushing his retirement up a little sooner. Who could blame him?

Sorry "Forced Marriages" are a myth. Jewish law prohibits it. There were a few cases of some ex-hassidic jews making such claims but last I checked they had many of their claims disproven and then they disapeared from the media's "lets bash Haredi Jews again" tour. She just looks nervous.

Don't attack people you know nothing about. I have many Chasidic friends and they are wonderful people. Lets just wish the best for the future of the young child born 3 months premature and without parents. Ok

2013-03-03 07:27:21 PM
The poor grandparents! All those hopes for their children and their grandchild, and all of a sudden, only the grandchild is left.

I'm actually finding it a little comforting that the couple came from a close-knit community like the Chasidim and not one of the loose-tied Facebook-friends 'typical American' groups that might or might not be able to pull together and raise an orphaned kid. I have every faith that my family and the close family friends who helped raise me would step up and look after a kid of mine in such a situation, but my husband's family...he has only three relatives and no living family-friends. The community simply isn't there for a lot of young Americans anymore, and it's stories like this that remind me of how lucky I was to get the kind of family I did.

This poor kid will have so many men to call 'uncle' and women to call 'auntie,' grandparents who love him and a strong church that protects its' own...I think he will be okay. The Chasidic kids from the Campus Interfaith Alliance were always really well-adjusted and happy to help anyone in need.

my better half was telling me that the community they come from is saying that they hope the police finds them before they do.  if the hasidic community does find the person responsible, there is a good chance that there won't even be a body found of the person responsible.  that person will just be missing and nothing more will be said about it.  it is sad, but true.

I feel the teen's punishment should be regular painful beatings to within an inch of his life, but not actually killing him like he wanted.

But then, I am a bitter and vengeful person.

When it comes to designing punishments, bitter and vengeful is always the best one with which to go.

That said, if she was ejected from the cab, I suspect she wasn't wearing her seatbelt....

I'm guessing if you are heavily pregnant and going into labor, you probably wouldn't wear a seatbelt. I doubt most women in that condition couldn't even sit up straight enough to put on a seatbelt. I don't know. Still wish she was wearing one :(

/sad sad story

7 months pregnant, they can indeed wear a seatbelt. My sister in law had no problem, just use a belt cushion if it feels like it digs in.

Yeah, I forgot about that one. But when my sister was preggo, she got HUGE at 7mo and just sort of topped out at that. I doubt that is the same for most people. Still, putting on a seatbelt during active labor is probably the last thing she would think about. But yeah, she should have put on a seatbelt. Sad story is sad :(

The driver of the BMW, along with a passenger, abandoned their car and fled on foot, police said.

The registered owner of the BMW, Takia Walker, 29, was questioned by cops Sunday morning. Investigators do not believe she was in the vehicle.

I want to know what sins the grandfather thinks he committed that vengeful God would punish him by orphaning his grandchild before it's even born...

2013-03-03 09:12:40 PM

SpiderQueenDemon: The poor grandparents!

This was nice. feminine and warm, a real sense of style to the tone. -1 point for the forced "Facebook durr" joke but otherwise 7.89/10 well done

In the seminal 80's novel Bonfire of the Vanities, a rich WASP kills a black kid with his car and runs away.  In today's story, a rich guy kills a few jews in his car, and given the various tensions between the black and hasidic communities in NYC that persist, this is an ironic twist on that original tale. Espcially if the drivers turn out to be black.

As an Orthodox Jew, I'm sorry to inform you that we drive cars. Just in Brooklyn maybe people just don't own cars at all.

Lady Indica: Slaxl: No!

They were orthodox she might have been forced into it. :(

Ok

It's not new for the media to put race and religion into articles to make a story more entertaining. With the current anti-Semite mood people are going through they probably figured it would result in more clicks and revenue.

What? It might be true that your better half heard one wingnut say something like that, but where do you come to that ridiculous conclusion? What are you basing this on? When has it ever happened that the Satmer community was suspected of making someone "disappear"?

There were thousands of people at the funeral, no doubt many of them feel the outlet for their anguish is revenge, but the remarks of some bystander aren't a reason to malign a community like that.

It happens more than you would be comfortable knowing about. No it doesn't. They do not practice vigilante justice against people outside the community. There are instances of intimidation within the community against perceived wrongdoers, like the recent case involving the former unlicensed therapist recently convicted of sex abuse against a young woman. In that case, supporters of the accused  tried to intimidate the accuser and her family, including harassing them until they had to close their business.

Other than perhaps some misunderstandings or confusion on your part as far as certain codes of conduct that occur within their community (and not vis-a-vis outsiders), I can't understand why you would want to malign an entire group in this manner.

Dude, these assholes make Catholic clergy look like amateurs.  Weberman was one conviction out of HUNDREDS of unprosecuted allegations of child rape and it's still widely denied even after they showed video footage of the good rebbe raping the child. fark these people sideways, they can all DIAF if that's how they want to live their life. I mentioned Weberman as an example. My point was that this occurred within their community, not against outsiders like the perpetrator of this horrific hit-and-run. Re Weberman, few things disgusted more in my life than to see the mainstream support he got. But at least the prosecutor pushed the case through, which is a precedent. Maybe next time they'll think twice about blindly supporting a monster.

...that's assuming the drivers weren't part of the community. How do you know they weren't? I'm well aware of the community's actions, probably more than you might be, so I know what i'm talking about. If the drivers aren't Jewish then yeah they'll be handled by the police and the justice system but we don't know that, now do we? And about that girl, i'm only 2 people removed from her and I know for a fact that her life was threatened on a regular basis. I'm not slandering this community, i'm just telling you what they are capable and willing to do to whoever killed this family, if they are a part of the same community.
