MIND BLOWN.
hardinparamedic: What the hell?Is this a headline about world events, or viral marketing for the Hobbit?
zamboni: Silverstaff: wickedg: Will someone please post the explanation for people who don't get TNG references.\too lazyShort version: They met an alien race that talked only in memes and cliches. They would parrot phrases referencing legends and history of their people, and that's it. "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra" was one of their more common phrases.Imagine if Fark was nothing but image memes, inside jokes, movie and TV show references, and cliched callbacks to older threads. . .you don't have to imagine very hard. Yeah, now imagine if an entire civilization communicated like that./Romero, explaining blogs. . .Kinda... sorta... we are a civilization that talks like that. Granted, the civilization on TNG seemed to have lost the ability, even the concept of speaking literally. But just think about how many times you reference something that you, your circle of friends, or even those with whom you share a language understand, but might be completely lost on someone from another background. A movie you've all seen. An event you all know about. A piece of literature that was widely read or taught in your language. Every time you use a name, or a term, or a phrase that represents more than the sum of its words, you are doing what that species was doing. If a civilization had enough common experiences it could be an efficient way to communicate. Sort of a language compression. But meet up with another civilization... and you end up battling to the death with invisible creatures like Picard and Dathon at El-Adrel on TNG. And you won't get over it... like Ted at Macho Grande./I liked that episode. More after I watched it a few times.
awfulperson: Hey, whatever happened to Fark TV?
