(PC Magazine)   Welcome back from National Unplugging Day. What's that? You never heard of it? It's this day where you turn off all screens and go out and try to find this thing called "a life." Yeah, that didn't work so well for me either   (pcmag.com) divider line 39

How about picking a day during the late Spring or early Summer instead of a day when a large swatch of the farking country is still cold and grey?

The only time I ever see anyone telling someone else to "get off the internet and go outside and get a life" is on internet forums. it's funny.

Some of us like it cold and grey. I cannot stand spring and summer - I get serious seasonal depression during those months.

If I hadn't been on Fark I wouldn't have known it was national unplug day.  So was I supposed to get a pamphlet in the mail?

Looks like this was yesterday. Yesterday I was at a convention for most of the day. Accidental great success.

Hmmm...a couple of options here...meh, I'll post both:

I'll "get a life" when you can prove it's better than what I've already got.

I'm a gamer.  I don't have "a life", I've got many.

/Mindless platitudes to justify my sedentary lifestyle FTW!

convention was held outside during the day? with no PA system and food cooked over fires? you walked or road your bike there? (public transit would work too I guess)
yah, not really unplugged if you have lights, ventilation and other modern conveniences.

I guess they could re-brand it as leave the house day.

the reason i stay inside playing on the 'net is because i don't want to go outside. during the day where i live there are 'walkers' best avoided. primarily mentally ill locals who will kill the entire day walking miles to pick up one or two token items from the grocery, or who walk miles and miles of local streets so they don't have to stare at the bleak walls of their miserable rented rooms. if they see you they want to engage you in conversation of the only thing they can remember about you. like reminding you the three bunnies that lived in your house are all dead now. dead. thanks for the memory, sunshine.

otherwise what is there? supermarkets and Wal-Mart. bars are for drunks and i'm a sober alcoholic. Church things are at specific hours; the down side is there are church people there. i don't even visit ill relatives or friends when they are hospitalized because i get very emotional and upset seeing them hurting, so i'd make a shiatty volunteer.

we pay good money for internet and cable TV. might as well enjoy it.

If I was meant to unplug, the Universe will send a power outage.

I went outside once.  I was very surprised by the lack of porn, and went back in the house.

Saw something about this on TV where people filled out cards that had "I Unplug so I can..." printed on them.  One woman wrote "read the newspaper."  Ok, so you're going to spend money on a wood-pulp sheet that gets ink all over your hands and has a small fraction of the news you could get if you hadn't unplugged.  Way to seize that day.

Do some people not think that all those millions of year of miserable pre-electronic existence were not merely leading to this, the place we were always meant to be?

We had a blizzard today followed by a power outage.  Like hell I am going outside.  Does it count as being "unplugged" if I read a book on my tablet while the power was out?

Last National "______" day I celebrated was National Margarita day a couple of Fridays ago.
Now that's a phony made up holiday I can believe in.

The weather was perfect where I am, so I drove to the beach.  There was no place to park, because everyone else had the same idea.  So I swung by a sandwich shop on my way back to my apartment to play video games all day.
