Every 30 win team will be a #1 seed and extremely likely #1 in the country so this "triple crown" is completely idiotic in terms of achievement.

Dumb headline is dumb

Wake me up when they make it past the second round.

/ No, really, wake me up.  I'm a Zag fan but they've never made it to the Final Four

At least *I* submitted this with an acceptable headline.

If you put them in the Big 1024, they'd be nowhere near 30 wins.  Just sayin'

I think if the Zags get a number one seed Jim Nantz's jimmies will be epically rustled. He always talks smack on the mid level leagues. The tourney needs to expand to 128 teams with each conference getting a seed in the top 64. A second auto seed needs to be awarded for when a regular season champion fails to wins its tourney.

Unless they make it to the Elite Eight (haven't been there in 14 years), all of this means nothing.

Nobody fills out the play-in round. Nobody's filling out a 128-team bracket.

Did you miss the biatchfest that occurred when the NCAA suggested folding the NIT into the tournament and forming a 96 team tournament?  (Of course most outlets didn't report the NIT part they just saw "96 teams" and complained that there were too many berths even though it would have resulted in 4 less teams playing in the post season.

Gonzaga will have the grandslam.  Subby forgot "#1 most over-rated team in the country."  They won't be playing on the second weekend.

Nah. That's what the NIT is for. Most regular season champs that don't get in are from crappy conferences and just don't have good enough at-large profiles. There's about 10 or 11 credible conferences, and the rest are dumpster fires. We don't need any more teams from the Big South or the Horizon League in the tourney.

2013-03-03 01:33:37 PM
They're in the WCC tournament and have only played THREE games against ranked teams. Of those three games against ranked teams they lost TWO OF THREE GAMES.

This is like an NBA team clinching a playoff spot by playing all of their games against D-League teams.

Every non-Gonzaga college BBall fan is praying they get assigned to the same side of the bracket as Gonzaga for an easy win.

AP Rankings are bullshiat.

Although, if *any* team was just begging to be the first #1 seed upset in the first round, it's Gonzaga this year.

Gonzaga won't schedule the University of Washington or Seattle University. They lobbied their own conference hard to exclude Seattle University rejoining the WCC, basically threatening to quit if Seattle University were allowed back in.

Its funny watching Gonzaga carefully market themselves as this plucky little underdog when they carefully avoid allowing any other Northwest team to be in a rivalry with them.

They usually schedule Wazzu every year, but they might change that.  This year they only beat them by 2.

2013-03-03 03:21:16 PM
And the reason should be obvious -- allowing a rivalry with other Northwest schools that have the potential to be on the same plateau with them is to allow their brand to erode. They can't stand the competition. So schedule another game against Portland State, then cry about how they would play a tough schedule if only those teams from the rest of the country would schedule them, poor Gonzaga.

Its as phony a shell game as Notre Dame football -- a few carefully placed national games mixed in among a cherry picked easy schedule. It fools the voters, who never bother to look at things like "strength of schedule."

So they beat up on bad teams like Portland State regularly, the play a nice charity game against Washington State, but they've refused to play University of Washington since 2006 over a comment a Seattle sports show host made ("Mark Few has a face like a starved chipmonk").... And the Seattle University saga was well documented (Seattle University, a former Northwest power in basketball and a catholic school, de-emphasized basketball in 1981.. allowing little-known school Gonzaga to begin to market itself as the local catholic basketball school.. flash forward 20 years, Seattle University wants back in, and Gonzaga lobbies the West Coast Conference to keep Seattle University out, despite that for fans it would be a natural rivalry, cross-state catholic schools in the same conference..)

Gonzaga likes having the state to itself, and its pretty damn obvious they are scared to play Seattle schools, for fear it'll put a dent in recruiting. Or maybe Mark Few just doesn't want to come over to Seattle any more and face the hostile media again. No clue. But its pretty sad watching Gonzaga actively run from playing U-W or SU.

2013-03-03 03:32:31 PM
For all the crap they receive, the NCAA tournament selection committee actually has done a fairly good job with the rankings for the past five years or so (see huge decline in "upsets").  I wouldn't be surprised to see Gonzaga with a three or four seed.

2013-03-03 03:47:17 PM
Olynyk will cause problems for teams and they have a well rounded attack, but that Illinois loss at home will likely be the blueprint for their NCAAT loss - their guards are scrawny and can't handle big, athletic perimeter players, the kinds of players you find in big conferences.

They're definitely good but I'd say closer to top 12 or so.

That place was always depressing after the Mako reactor exploded.

/Illinois now beat two of the #1's this year (sort of), one on the road!

Hey, they'll often play my school (EWU). They'll of course play all the games at home and they'll get to shoot 4x as many FTs as my team as though they need the help.

You called them an easy win. Not my words- yours. Put your money where your mouth is on a first round upset.

Funny how when other schools schedule cupcake schedules they're "playing within the rules", and when Gonzaga does the same thing, they're weak pussies that couldn't be a "legitimate program". As if their program is somehow illegitimate.

Why is it that Gonzaga is still thought of as an underdog? They make the tournament every year (even if they never live up to their seeding) and have a national presence. They're as much an underdog as Duke is. As for this triple crown, they play in the West Coast Conference against such powerhouses as Portland, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, etc. If they ever want to truly be taken seriously by basketball fans, they'll beef up their non-conference schedule. And as for bagging on other teams having weaker teams early in the season, those teams usually play in much tougher conferences that are actually, y'know, a challenge.

They will make an early exit in the round of 32. Book it. Done.

It's a big mystery.  ESPN loves them.  They love themselves and their precious underdog status, although they haven't done anything in the tournament nor upset anybody in any fashion in years.  You'd think, say, Butler, freakin tiny Butler, making the title game two years in a row would make THEM the honored underdog.

Never heard of a basketball triple crown.  If there was one it would have to be  win your conference, win conference tourney, win national championship.

Subby must have gone to a school with no banners.
