They will if they go that route.

No way will jay let this happen.

2016 there will be a mini series depicting Leno as the huge douche he is, again.

Would be hilarious if Fallon's people put this out to screw Jay the same way Jay and Helen Kusnick screwed Carson.

Jimmy Fallon is one of the least funny people in the universe. Anyone who would watch The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon is one sick puppy.

Steve Allen and Johnny Carson are screaming from their graves.

WW III will not be fought over oil, fresh water, religious ideology or anything like that.

Instead it will be fought by those who think Leno sucks vs. those who think Fallon sucks

So I guess I'd be Switzerland, then, because I think they both suck. A lot.

I don't think anyone is surprised by this after what Leno did to Conan.

Fallon is more like Leno than Coco is anyways.

not this crap again, someone close down NBC already

I quite like Jimmy Fallon.  Sure he'll get beaten like a government mule at 11:35, but he's great on Late Night.

/and if anybody says Craig Ferguson is the funniest man is late night needs their head examined
//the crazed Scotsman bit only works for fifteen minutes
///the skleton announcer doesn't work at all

Can we have just have Bonnie Hammer take over all of NBC and crash that ship into the ground and allow Netflix to salvage the good pieces?

Ferguson is not the funniest man on late night, but his running self referential "You see what I did there" is far funnier than Fallon laughing at his joke before delivering the punchline.

// Colbert is #1, Stewart and Conan tied for #2, then Kimmel, then Ferguson

Hey, dumb ass!  Fallon has style!  Tons of style!  It's quite impressive, in fact, how he has made sucking as bad as he does so fashionable!!1!!

Say what you will about Fallon, but the fact the he got the legendary Roots crew to be his band is amazing and makes the show worth watching.

So, what you're saying is that NBC should just cut Fallon out entirely and turn his slot into a 1 hour The Roots music variety show.

I can get behind that.

I hated Fallon on SNL, and have never watched his late night show.  Does he still laugh at his own jokes before he gets the punchline out, and ruin everything that he's ever been in?

If he gets the Tonight Show, it will probably be the death knell for NBC's late night.

I thought NBC was grooming Chelsea Handler to take over Tonight Show?  They've had her on as a guest so many times I thought they were going to make her the next Joan Rivers.

// haven't watched the Tonight Show since Leno came back.
// The show really died when they fired Conan.  now it's just the Leno show.
// I'm not allowed to use slashies at home, so this is fun

Well thank god for improvements! Jay Leno and his "Comedy for Conformists" has been stinking up that time slot with weapons grade anti-funny for years.

Don't watch any of these guys as a rule, but I've seen some funny Ferguson segments on Youtube.  Fallon has some funny stuff as well.

Louis CK has a show on FX called Louie, and that part of a story arc that's part of season 3 (I think). It revolves around Louis CK being offered a chance to replace Letterman and host the Late Show.

If people tuned out Conan's Tonight Show because they felt alienated by how self-depreciating and mocking his sense of humor was, I don't even want to know how they'll react to a guy who can't even tell a joke properly.

This has disaster written all over it if it actually happens.

He is a lot better as a late night host than a sketch comedy guy.
But that's also like saying stubbing your toe is a lot better than getting kicked in the nuts.

He's got some funny bits.

Don't know that NBC will keep them on The Tonight Show as they might scare Grandma and Grandpa.  Also depends on if Fallon stays in New York or moves out to L.A. Moving to L.A. changes more than just the timeslot.

I wouldn't go that far, and he'll certainly never take over for Letterman (way too much of an oddball), but he really understands the late night game and enjoys turning it on its head. Too much so to take an 11:35 slot.

========================================================

He was forcibly retired against his will, threatened to take his services elsewhere, NBC put him back in charge of their own volition. NBC is the bad guy in this equation, not Leno.

Plus, Conan ends up with a GIANT paycheck to do nothing for 6 months and then gets another mega deal with TBS. He certainly didn't end up on the short straw of anything other than the 'history' of the tonight show.

Not yet, I'm curious about the "Hannibal" show coming up. After the first commercial break of the pilot episode, then you can close NBC down.

I'm not crazy about Fallon, but in my opinion, he's a much better writer than he is a performer. Some of his bits are quite entertaining. The problem (at least for me) is that it's painful to watch him perform because he thinks he's so damn funny. He needs to quit laughing at his own jokes.

2013-03-03 09:26:43 AM
I see people are still getting pissed over late night TV, who the fark cares, go to bed

2013-03-03 09:48:42 AM
I'm a huge fan of Craig Ferguson, and I love the utter strangeness of his show. It's something that wouldn't work well any earlier, and I'd prefer him to stay where he is. He can get away with a lot more as a late, late show than if he had Letterman's timeslot. It's not for everyone, but at that time it doesn't have to be.

I also think Jimmy Fallon has never been better than as a late-night host. The bit when he performed 'Call Me Maybe' with toy instruments is still one of my favorite things he's ever done. Now it doesn't matter if he laughs during a sketch, it's late night, so that makes it funny. (Carson would do the same thing and we'd revere him for it.)

I never thought I would like Jimmy Kimmel, but he's definitely grown on me. I'm still amazed he pulled off his Ben Afflek video, and the episode when Matt Damon took over his show (and retitled it 'Jimmy Kimmel Sucks') was brilliant.

And that's just network. Throw in basic cable and there is just too much late-night to manage. And that's a good thing.

Maybe the fact he only has to come up with one show a week increases the quality of said show.

Fallon is endearing and seems to enjoy the job. He'll connect with a mass audience just fine and people here will biatch about him.

Dawg47: Maybe the fact he only has to come up with one show a week increases the quality of said show.

I think part of it is they don't spend the time trying to come up with a 10 minute monologue every show.  Then bringing on all the guests at once lets the show go in so many strange and different directions.  American chat shows are boring in that pretty much every guest is asked the same questions, in the same order then comes up with a mildly amusing anecdote, then they go away to be replaced by someone else.

2013-03-03 10:51:33 AM
All I have to add to this conversation, and it's not much, is fark Helen Kushnik.  Without her, Letterman would be the Tonight Show host, and everything would be right with the world.

Obvious? More like Unlikely.

And poor Conan. Got screwed royally by NBC, and it pretty much stunted his career. His TBS show is just not that good. He looks like he's uninterested and just going through the motions. It's really too bad, because he was probably my favorite late night host for many years.
