I remember the drag race on Top Gear between the McLaren and the Bugatti. McLaren was better off the line bu thte Bugatti overtook it later on.

Apples and oranges. The Bugatti can do 254 mph, and Captain Slow did that on Top Gear. I bet the Nissan falls about a hundred short of that...

that video was about 5:10 longer than necessary.

The one in the vid managed 194.

The Forza 4 version of the Bugatti is the closest I'm ever going to get to driving one, but if it's even vaguely accurate I wouldn't want to do much in the Veyron other than going fast in straight lines. The model says it has phenomenal traction control considering the HP and excellent brakes, but its cornering sure left a lot to be desired compared to the various GT-Rs and Ferraris and Vipers.

They didn't.   But a few people did make the conversion.

Regarding the start in the 2nd video - is the Bugatti really that much slower off the line or is the driver sandbagging?

Anyway, I guess the point of the video is "Ha ha ha! I beat a Bugatti with a car less than 1/10th the price!". Meh, I don't care if that is or isn't the point, I like my Toyota Sienna minivan.

Atomic Spunk: Anyway, I guess the point of the video is "Ha ha ha! I beat a Bugatti with a car less than 1/10th the price!"

That's not hard, though. A lot of the Veyron's price is in high quality parts that AREN'T mass produced. Lots of specialists working overtime need a salary, hence the price tag. There's plenty of cars that go faster.

2013-03-02 08:38:11 PM
This just in: Heavily modded cars that can't do anything but go in a straight line without blowing up can beat production cars in drag races.

Also, the Veyron driver farked up the start both times (too early, then too late), so I wouldn't put it down 100% to the cars.

Oh, I'm not stressed, only pointing out that "the video is right underneath" doesn't help.  I was initially only pointing out that the video should have been edited down, then responding to others' comments on that.  I mean, if I had better things to do than banter pointlessly about a five minute video, would I have a TotalFark subscription?

Like I said, don't know how accurate the Forza 4 models are, I'm more of an airplane guy, I play it with a nice force feedback rig because it's fun and I don't read oodles of car mags. In Forza, most of the race setup Vipers handle really reasonably well for the price range and have a surprisingly tight turn radius which helps at like the last turn at Laguna Seca. In Forza the entire Porsche 9xx series are way more dangerous.

Uncle Pooky: Did anyone else notice the end graphics list the Bugatti as the winner?

The Bugatti certainly lost almost a second off the start, but it is showing 30km/h faster at the mile, and  it didn't look like it was about to fall apart.

Also, I don't remember the skyline having 900hp, the way it is listed in this video.

On the graphics at the end of the 2nd video, it says "stock" under the Bugatti, but it says "Altechno" under the Nissan. Sounds like a name of a company that does modifications. I'm guessing that there are a lot of aftermarket parts to get it to 900hp.

I also noticed the RT : reaction time of the Bugatti is almost half a second, which more than make up the distance at the end.

So, at full throttle, the Veyron will drink the whole tank in eight minutes,  $38K dollars per set of tires, which I think I need replacing every 2500 miles.  Cracks in the rims have to be checked often,  suggested to change every fourth tire change, $11,500.  Routine service alone is $21K annually.

See, the maintenance is what makes this car worthless as far as I'm concerned.  It's not the money, cause if you can buy a $2 million car, those expenses are pocket change, but why would you want to screw around with it so much?

mid 90s LX...rip out all the crap to make it even lighter, throw some GT40 heads and a 200 shot on it and it should be in the 10s.

5.0 GTs weighed like 500-800 pounds more than a 5.0 LX. if I remember correctly.

I've been through there several times. In the snow at night was interesting. I'd wager the skill set is different compared to someone who presses some buttons, mashes the gas, and lets the computer have all the fun. Granted, I go 22 miles per day instead of 220mph. But, still...

Drag Racers need a reality check.

There is no realistic comparison between a factory supercar and a tuner drag racer. There will always be a drag racer that is faster than a million dollar supercar in the same way that a rocket sled is about 20 times as fast as the fastest drag racer on the planet.

The difference between a Veyron and everything else on a drag strip is the engineering. You can drive the Veyron like a normal car if you want, or you can ruin a set of tires doing 2.5 second 0-6 runs at a strip. But the fastest drag racer at the strip isnt even street legal and doesnt have AC.

Plus lets face it, two guys pull up to a wedding and the bridal party is waiting at the curb to enter the church........One is in a Veyron and the other is in a riced out Skyline drag racer.

Who goes home with the maid of honor? Is it the guy who explains how he bent a sheet of aluminum and mounted three switches into it so he can control the fire extinguishers in his car?

I dont think so.

Those recommendations are only for using a Veyron regularly as a track car. If you take it out weekends to go to the country club and drive the grand kids around its not going to cost much at all except for service....since there are probably only a couple Volkswagen dealerships who can service anything other than the engine.

The same engine minus the turbos is in several VW products.

It's an amazing piece of engineering, but I doubt that more than 3 or 4 Veyrons have ever actually been past 220 MPH. The Average buyer isnt qualified to do it and doesnt have the right facility to support the run.

Capt Slow only hit 254 on a special track with a perfectly flat 5 mile straight and he had a team of mechanics on hand to certify it and put on new tires right before the run.

If you take it out on some straight road in Nevada and nail the pedal you are going off the road into a ditch and probably dying.

The Veyron is much better for trips like Clarksons race against the plane. Open road, downforce, passing power, drama, etc.......

And if I had to pick one thing I WOULD NOT do in that skyline it would be a road trip.

I liked the Top Gear episode where they pointed out that at top speed, the tires will only last 15 minutes. But that's OK, because the fuel will only last for 12.

With the radio, satnav, heat, heated seats, heated mirrors, cruise control, crock pot, suit presser, shoe polisher and dikfer going.

The Skyline looks like it was built without amenities to save weight for racing.

You mean a car that was specifically designed to do one thing beats can do what it was designed for better than a car that was designed with something else in mind?

The Veyron, eyesore that it is, isn't a drag racer and wasn't made for lap times.

I got tired of this non-argument back when I had a 350Z. Why yes, you can beat me in a drag race if I did something that stupid. I can wave at you as I pass you in a turn. So what?

Look at the numbers at the end. The Veyron was gaining. Look at their reaction times. With equal reactions, the Veyron wins both the quarter and the mile. Not that that makes the modded R34 any less impressive.

archichris The same engine minus the turbos is in several VW products.

No it's not. There was one VW with a W8 (Passat of a few years back), two with a W12 (Phaeton and Touareg of a few years back, though it's also in an Audi and a couple Bentleys) and quite a few with a VR6 or VR5, but never has any other car had the W16 - turbo or otherwise - that the Bugatti has.

Oh noes!  A custom sports car beat a stock sports car by getting a better jump off the line.  They stayed about the same distance apart the whole race.  Only those who know little of cars would find anything to speak of.
