As opposed to wearing them as a totally ineffectual token display of workplace loyalty?

Favorite example of that was during SARS, flying back to Canada, when all the Japanese took their masks off after takeoff, and replaced then on descent...

Indeed.  Though I am puzzled by this.  Japanese dentists are quite affordable.  I got my impacted wisdom teeth removed and it wasn't more than 5000yen ($50).  Getting a cavity filled was about 1000yen ($10).  Cleaning isn't expensive at all.  It's strange seeing people buying a new car every five years and packing smartphones in their Vuitton bags but suggest that they see a dentist and they insist that its too expensive.

I'm not too particular about teeth.  They don't have to be straight and they don't have to be unnaturally white.  But Jesus Christ, Japan, clean those things once in a while.  I hate being on a train when some salary man next to me yawns out a greasy green cloud of mouth rot.  I have coworkers that can make me gag from a good four feet away.  Ugh.

You know, sometimes I think disembarking from a plane in Japan just as the LSD is kicking in would be the craziest most awesomest trip you could ever take. With a proper guide to keep you out of too much trouble, of course. And the real shiat, not that strychnine crap that makes all your bones sore and your joints pop.

In regards to TFA, the idea isn't horrible, but surgical masks? Perhaps someone should make and market some sort of dyed cloth with various patterns and designs and what not.

About the only thing I remember from that mummy movie was that chick with the thing on her face and the dark eyes, when they were buying a camel or something. Was quite striking. You know, that chick that was in Constantine.

You would probably be disappointed by 90% of Japan.  The freaks normally stay around Akiha and some parts of Ikebukuro.  Anywhere else you go, it's just a bunch of stuffy business men, soaplands (aka "semi-legal brothels") for the business men, and old neglected and falling apart temples and shrines.  The reason why everything that comes out of Japan seems so weird is because they are so repressed and conservative that they take everything to the extreme whenever they get the smallest opportunity to let loose.

I don't know.  the last time i flew, there was a woman wearing a surgical mask, and I requested to sit as far away from her as possible.

fark it, it's not fashionable, it means one of three things:

1) You have a terrifying disease and people should be scared of being near you.
2) You think others near you have a terrifying disease and you're scared of being near them.
3) You are a terrorist or mad scientist, and planning to release some sort of virus or poison soon.

In all three of those equally likely scenarios, I don't want to be near you, and I think you should not be allowed to fly, nor even be in public places.  Had I been running security at the airport, either her mask would have been trash, or she would have been extensively and deeply searched by the kinkiest TSA person i had on staff.
