dittybopper: Sherman Potter: dittybopper: Plus, I made the thing myself.Really? The head looks like Obsidian. Am I right? Nice work.Yep. It's obsidian. And it's not all that great, I'm still just learning. It's just that it isn't a hard skill to learn the basics of. Here are my first few attempts at it:[i56.tinypic.com image 640x480]Chronological order is clockwise from top-left, which is the first point I ever made (from a beer bottle). The bottom two points were supposed to be a knife blade like Oetzi had, but out of obsidian. Unfortunately I cracked it, so I turned it into a spear point and an arrow point. This is the first head I was truly proud of making:[i56.tinypic.com image 640x480]It's made out of actual flint, and I dulled the edges and carry it in my pocket as a sort-of good luck token. You screw up a lot when learning, but it's not that hard, and when I went to Fort Ticonderoga a while back and looked at the arrowheads there, I was all "Hey, I can do better than *THAT*!".If you are interested, I suggest getting a scrap of leather or good, thick leather work gloves, making an Ishi stick, and finding a good, fist-size hammer stone. A baton made out of antler or very hard wood is nice too, but not necessary when you are starting out.
Tran Forsythe: Erm... I'm not a scientist scientician, but ozone in the lower atmosphere is a greenhouse gas. Yeah, let's make more of it, so we can de-scent stuff for housewives!./not
