Not stating what kind of cancer he has? Isn't it obvious? He's got Asshole Cancer.

This could very well be the case. Though the fact that he's had surgery four times kinda makes you wonder, how many assholes have been removed?

How DARE him for attempting energy resource sovereignty!  ALL YOUR OILS ARE BELONG TO THE NATION OF FREEDOM!!!!

Too bad for him.  If he had been president of the Soviet Union it would have only been a cold.

Why is Hugo Chavez hated by Americans so much? He is a hero for the poor, that is why.
God speed Chavez

downstairs: Serious question about all this, I've been wondering since the news of his cancer broke.

Why is he going to Cuba for treatment?  I would be shocked that Cuba has better cancer doctors- or any medical stuff- than Venezuela.  I'd assume Venezuela isn't the best in the world, but are they really worse than Cuba?

It's called security.  You don't risk a doctor in your own country from being paid off to do more harm.

Well, usually after your second time around with colon cancer is when you end up with a colostomy bag. Unless you have a really bad case to begin with.

/dad had colon cancer
//got a bag after he relapsed
///thankfully, he's still around now
////and yeah, Chavez may have been a dick, but he doesn't deserve near as much of the hate that he gets from conservatives

St_Francis_P: That link has me convinced.

I can imagine Chavez standing in line outside the dictators club in hell, the demonic bouncer looking in his little black book, noting the pathetically low body count next to Mr Chavez's name, then shaking his head and turning him away. "Sorry Sir. Perhaps sir, the La Bamba club down the street, I hear Jimmy Carter and Woody Allen are playing tonight"

SNL must bring back the Franco joke. Please.

Congratulations. Enjoy whatever time you have. My father-in-law had colon cancer. He wasn't lucky enough to get it the second time.

Here's another serious question. How is Venezuela as a travel destination? I would assume that there's not a huge influx of Americans in there, so it might be a nice change...

ausfahrk: Takeshi6400: macadamnut: Takeshi6400: They have a different definition of "live birth" than the US, that causes many deaths to not be included and make their figures look a lot better.

Awww, did that mean old Castro steal your toy banana?

Uuumm......ok.

Cuba is one of many countries that has a different definition of what constitutes a "live birth."  The United States counts any baby exhibiting any signs of life as a live birth.  In France, Czech Republic, Ireland and Holland it has to be over 22 weeks and 500gm before it is counted.  The United States also counts premature babies who die before their due date but many other countries do not.  Many countries also report deaths in the first 24 hours of life as still births rather than infant deaths.  In the US they would be counted as infant deaths.

In the U.S. your life expectancy can drop by 10 years because you're not white.

So you're saying black and Mexicans are dragging us down in yet another way?

Is there any Easter egg hunt they can't turn into a buttfarkathon?

I was only in a border town, so I don't know for sure.  Angel Falls are supposed to be beautiful and Maricabo is a destination as well.  Probably not the best idea to hit Caracas though.

What is sad is thathe does not piss off American "progressives".

What I love is that American conservatives seem to be all outraged by the Cuban government and want to enforce that embargo that hasn't worked for 60 years, yet never a peep about placing an embargo on China.

Did anyone else notice that Chavez has been cultivating a ridiculous cult of personality?  The newspapers are saying silly things like "Chavez got cancer because he was working so very hard for the people that he neglected his health.

Well, true. And then the Cubans vote Republican in a very important swing state.

Seriously!  Would Chavez even make double-A in the tyrants league?

have any of you met any people from venezuela? i can't speak with any authority but of the 50 or so people i've met from the country, very few of them really cared for chavez. not saying they hated him but they definitely did not like him or many of his policies, to the point they said they would not recommend me coming to visit any time soon...

How did you meet 50 Venezuelans without going there?

I wouldn't doubt that Jenny McCartney has killed more people than Chavez.  Far as I know nothing like say the Argentinian Dirty war is going on.in Venezuela. Crime, police violence, corruption, dirty politics, mismanagement, sure, but really who cares vs any where else.  I can go to Florida for that stuff.

So who would get drafted into the developmental league first, Chavez or Noriega?

Certainly no Stalin.

Or even Noriega.  I'd rate him a bit worse than Berlusconi though.  In any case, he's a ridiculous popinjay who's not worth 10% of the villification and paranoia the GOP and Foxs spewed over him.

It's problem, there are rational reasons fro calling Chavez, but they're drowned out by a river of pearl clutching bullshait by people no one trusts. Which probably a decent reason as any why Chavez remains in power.

The people in Venezuela love Chavez and that's all that should matter to us. He is better liked than most leaders, especially in the West. That he did anything wrong is all in the eyes of ignorant people. It's kind of like how people all across the world hate Western governments (much more than they dislike Chavez). Western governments have obviously done exponentially more "bad" than Chavez ever did. But the official Western line is that they don't like him (even though they do), so the people follow suit like good citizens.

If that's your line of reasoning, stick with Cuba. They're setup better for tourists anyway

Come on, his reasoning is based on logic. Kneejerk logic, but still

The Face Of Oblivion: Marcintosh: perhaps it's that conservatives don't know anything about Citizens Energy Corporation or going over to a neighbors home to split wood for the elderly or disabled.

I see you, Joe Kennedy.  Three generations of self-aggrandizing, addiction-prone, Nazi-sympathizing, pocket-lining limousine liberals is enough.  Uphold the final element of your family tradition.

I was trying to remember your username, I was wondering if you were still around Fark. I don't read every Chavez thread, but I know you've posted about the shiat that's gone down in your past before. At this point I'm surprised you don't just keep links to your old posts handy to cut-and-paste whenever someone says, "meh, he's not really all that bad."

More of an amusement really. Except that whole theft of Exxon assets, I find him to be a clown. I fully expect the Che Brigade to re-write his accomplishments in glowing terms then repeat those lies so often they believe them. It's not like it hasn't happened before.
