No, it's the B-grade English sci-fantasy show with salt and pepper shakers, accessorized with plunger and egg beater, that say, "exterminate"

/long live the doctor...

Well that's a surprisingly clear view of the Ice Warriors, at least in the face department.  Gotta say I'm impressed: once again "New Who" has managed to update the look using modern tech while keeping it very distinctly the same creature.  They did that with the Sontaarans and Daleks quite nicely (minus the Mighty Morphin' Power Daleks), and this looks to be no different.

It'll be interesting to see if the Ice Warriors are presented as antagonists or not.  They've been distinctly on the neutral-if-occasionally-dickish side since the Third Doctor's tenure.

I'm glad they seem to have moved away from the Playskool Daleks.

Why so serious?  Man, that would be a terrifying crossover - the Joker* as a Timelord.

*More the Heath Ledger 'Let's see how much we can fark things up, because fark you, that's why' as opposed to the equally awesome, but greed inspired Mark Hamill version.

To be fair that was when the Tardis was grounded so he needed some way to get around while trapped on Earth.

The original ice warriors were found in the ice on Mars.

So didn't they already do this with Tennant's 'Waters of Mars'.

Or were those supposed to be different monsters hidden in the ice on Mars?

My fan theory was that the Ice Warriors are what froze the waters on Mars, trapping the mutating beast water until the Earth expedition started thawing it. The Doctor does mention he recognizes the Martian language.

jchic: I liked the updated Cybermen as well.

The only reason I didn't include the Cybermen was that they CONSTANTLY updated themselves in nearly every iteration of their appearance.  It matches what they are anyway, since they're all about constantly upgrading themselves.  Not redesigning the Cybermen would have been surprising.

That being said, I do like the (various) new Cybermen as well.

Wasn't Looking at his Neck: They haven't appeared since the Third Doctor's tenure...

I was referring to even the passing mentions of them, few though they are.  In The Waters of Mars the Doctor even calls them "a wise and noble race", versus the Second Doctor era where they were without exception aggressive genocidal asshats.  Of course at the time BBC was having a spat with Terry Nation over his asinine licensing demands for using the Daleks and wanted to make a new "brand identity" of recurring evil villain for the Doctor to go up against.  Genocide worked so well for the last set, so....

My memory is fuzzy, but wasn't that exactly what they said happened? I know the Doctor namechecked the Ice Warriors and mentioned that they had been long gone by the Waters of Mars.

Umm, great for the return of the Ice Warriors (c)1970 BBC enterprises.

I'm more interested in THIS pic:

Which hopefully indicates that the REAL Cybermen might be returning.
Still don't understand why Daivies changed the origin story.  The original Cybermen were a tragedy and warning of supplementing humanity with machinery.

Yeah, we're getting a new Cybermen design this season. The design is much sleeker, and it almost reminds me of Iron Man.

25.media.tumblr.com

Of course, Tony Stark is already well on his way to becoming a Cyberman, so it is kind of fitting. Since Neil Gaiman is writing the episode, and he loves classic Who, I'm betting they are almost certainly from Mondas or Telos.

The Cyberman at the end totally looks like he's checking his phone.

Well for two reasons:

1) The whole concept of "Mondas" is a rather antiquated idea that modern science can't just poke holes into, it literally obliterates it.  There would have to be some MAJOR retconning for it to be believable even in the fast-and-loose world of physics and science that Doctor Who operates in, whereas "parallel dimension LOL" is something that (for now) everyone can believe easily.

2) The "new origin" story was actually based on a Doctor Who audio play called "Spare Parts", which tried to explain how the Mondasians transitioned from humanoid to cyborg.  It was incredibly well received, considered the "definitive" Cybermen origin story, and was one of the non-TV stories most requested to be made into or even mentioned in an episode (and thus made canon).

I would like to see an extensive retcon so the Mondasian Cybermen could make a proper appearance, but I understand why early in New Who it didn't happen.

Mara See Mara Do: Admitted n00b here, but what's wrong with different colored daleks? They're still gonna exterminate you.

Mostly, it's that the episode made a big deal about that they were "in vibrant colour" or something as a way of distinguishing rank, when the colors they chose made them look like some knock-off robot fighting team.

The entire episode that shows off the Mighty Morphin' Daleks was building towards this awesome thing, and then it turned into "INTRODUCING OUR FALL DALEK FASHION LINE".  The problem is that the Daleks for the most part didn't look any different.  Yes, there were some minor size and shape changes that you could see when the two were placed side-by-side, and the obvious color coordination, but there was no need to have them actually line up like the starting lineup of your favorite sports team:

www.geekpeeks.com

It didn't make them look scary, it made them look incompetent.  They're daleks, not kids at summer camp: they don't need to be attired in bright, shiny colors so they can figure out who is of what rank in the grand scheme of things.
