It's entertaining. It's the fakest reality show ever. Well, maybe not as fake as Amish Mafia.

A channel called "Arts and Entertainment" and "Duck Dynasty" is their highest rated show in its history. Yeah, that about sums it all up.

Pretty much this. The bad actors give away that it's entirely fake and scripted. Still, it reinforces my predetermined bias of rednecks, so I laugh.

The fact that they at one time thought a channel devoted to high quality "Arts and Entertainment" would be viable serves as a reminder of how dramatically television has gone downhill.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to fix a bowl of sketti, and learn about how our founding fathers were controlled by aliens.

I don't care about if it's real or fake - all I care about is that it's funny.  And it is.

It's not a documentary, it's a sitcom, and a hilarious one at that.

The thing I like about Duck Dynasty is the way that Jase fancies himself a tongue in cheek Redneck Guru.  And he breaks character juuuuuust enough to let you know he's giving you a wink when he talks about redneck philosophy and wisdom.  I'll watch it when nothing else is on and it blows my mind that I'm enjoying the subtext in a show "about redneck millionaires".

My wife turned this on a few weeks ago. Within moments, it was so obviously faked I couldn't stand it.
Bad acting, unnatural behaviour, suburban houses, rich pretty wives, spoiled fat kids, etc. I knew guys like this growing up, and there is nothing real about it whatsoever.

But then as I kept watching... I figured out that they are fully aware of it. It appears they're doing it just for fun. They know that they aren't "real" outdoorsy mountain men. It's all kinda for laughs. And as soon as you're aware of it, and you're aware that they're aware you're aware of it, the show does have a certain charm to it.

My only exposure to this show is advertisements on hulu. My girlfriend and I can't figure what the show is about or why it's on tv based on those adverts. It looks like they just follow some hicks around and that's it. Am I missing something or is that the idea of the show?

Yeah Honey Boo Boo being on the LEARNING channel, and Ancient Aliens being on the HISTORY channel are bigger Facepalms than DD on A&E

Now I'm gonna have to go read a few text books to regain the IQ points I lost by getting in a thread about reality TV

Duck Dynasty. Honey Boo boo. Tow-truck-repo-man, Pawn Stars, Bayou Billionaires, Redneck Island, Moonshiners, Swamp People and 20 different Cops/Under The Influence/Speeders/Big House/Prison/Stupid Criminals/DUI/Jail COPS shows.

Crap television programed to keep America stupid. Junk food for the brain. And they just keep coming.

Thanks Obama.

I read an article on Cracked (those articles are actually well-researched, if you disagree then you're probably a fan of said crap shows), and he made a good point. He was talking about Honey Boo Boo and said the reason shows like this are on, is because soon there won't be any room in society for those types of people, and we're making it ok to laugh at them. Not as in he thinks it's on purpose or some conspiracy, he was just saying that's what he thinks the sociological trend is. Interesting to think about.

sure haven't: the reason shows like this are on, is because soon there won't be any room in society for those types of people, and we're making it ok to laugh at them.

You know how I know you don't know how American culture works?

They'll become a "protected class" of people, and it'll be really un-PC to laugh at them. 50 (20?) years from now, people will look back at these shows and think "How could they be so insensitive? These people are just trying to live their lives. Now go 'way, 'baitin' "

I'm really surprised these far right wing types aren't protesting these shows, how these redneck shows are some kind of conspiracy by Obama and the libruls to make white people look bad.

I was watching Full Throttle Saloon the other night, some of it's OK, but then you have these guys drunk, rolling around in mud like pigs. I mean, this is on prime time. Little kids are gonna think this is cool.

I have seen a few episodes, it is scripted, it is fake, but the scene where the grandfather builds the playhouse for is grand daughters, then uses a chainsaw to cut a window had me laughing my ass off.

Have not seen the show but saw the 4 main Ducks(?) on Kimmel.  They were rather amusing and you could tell that they knew exactly what they were doing and getting a laugh out of it.  They will milk it for as much as they can and try and go back to a semi normal life once it is over.

If people would simply take the phrase "reality" out of the equation, they would see that this is probably funnier than almost any network sit-com out there right now.

They're open about the fact that their show is "directed reality".  The show is mostly unscripted but they're given a scenario and they run with it.  On that basis alone, they're more naturally talented than most sit-com actors who, without a script, can barely articulate their own name...let alone be funny.

/met Willie a couple months ago.  Talked briefly and he took a couple pictures with my kid.
//scored HUGE hero points with the kid.

These guys make duck calls, which in essence is speaking to animals, you should be celebrating their magical white trashness since you can speak to animals too. Wasnt Terry Bradshaw the back up QB to one of these guys when he was in college?  They are far from white trash, but lets judge them on how they look instead
