So, I'm curious - what, exactly, is the fuss? Buy a couple of hundred bucks' worth of parts, and the town's arrangement with the union means the work gets done for free. (The labor's far more expensive than the parts, typically, when dealing with a plumbing refit.) Shed gets up to code, no risk of explosion, and everyone gets clean clothes.

The downside of not doing it is the waiting game to see which is the first shed that pops like a zit, expelling a crotchety cooked coot, thanks to the methane explosion.

Why do some folks dig their heels in for no other reason than to dig their heels in?

The Irresponsible Captain: In normal places stuff like this is "grandfathered in" -- if you don't change anything then you are fine. Once you start cutting pipes you have to bring it up to code. Which makes all the sense in the world, after all if it worked for 35 years it's unlikely to fail tomorrow just because someone else is in charge.

Also ten days or thirty days? Normal stuff like this is at least 90 days, and usually years of notice.

This is pretty much what I was going to say. Aside from the venting issue which is a public health concern, if a 1.5" pipe was working just fine for 35 years then there should be no reason to change it. But I think that because of the need to properly vent the drains (which requires "Cutting pipe") they end up having to do the entire drain system. It's a catch 22 situation. The vents are probably $20-$30 in materials but the drain pipes can get pretty salty depending upon how long the run is.

It didn't start reasonable though, when your first letter to the people is:

Stepping back from that isn't being reasonable, its just pitchfork avoidance. (And that's a 75$ fee)

Except that they have to buy the materials from the union plumbers.

A local union doing free work?  Unlikely.  They will be making money somewhere, somehow.

So, there's a bit of bullshiat being spread in that article. First of all, the purpose of the vent in a residential drain system is to allow air to enter when the drains are in use, preventing a vacuum from forming behind the "slug" of water going down the drain. The vent also vents small quantities of sewer gases to the air. But there's NOT enough gas to cause an explosion. And if the laundry drains have traps, that gas can't get in to the shed anyway. Second of all, the national plumbing code only requires 1 1/2" drains for bathtubs. So why would a washer require 2"? The drain tube coming out of most washers is 1" diameter You don't require that much capacity to handle the water.
