"The paper says it's not clear from listening to Travis Clawson's phone message whether he inadvertently twisted the words or it just was misheard by the receptionist from his Sewickley eye doctor's office who sent the day's events in motion. "

How so?

Step 1: Listen to voicemail recording
Step 2: Decide whether voicemail recording was misheard.

"Shootin' some b-ball outside of the school..." or "Shootin' some people outside of the school..."

Eh, I can see it.  I also think this was a massive overreaction.  Let's make sure zero tolerance is properly applied though.  The kid should definitely go to jail for life because he should have know that a popular and well-know song lyric could be misunderstood by an idiot over the phone.

Right, the important part is that someone FELT threatened, just ask Bob Woodward.

<I>A statement released to parents by Ambridge Superintendent Erv Weischedel says, "while this situation can be considered to be a false alarm, it was an excellent opportunity to test our emgergency procedures."/<I>

If by test the procedures you mean can't even practice basic investigatory techniques (like calling the cell phone to verify what was said, or even calling the cell phone to ask the kid what's up) then yeah I guess. Tis is more of a criticism of the police than the school obviously, but still...

2013-03-01 07:22:02 AM
When the receptionist called to confirm, she thought Clawson's voice message said something to the effect of "I can't come to the phone right now, because I'm going to kill all the (expletive) at my school."

A ridiculous phone message? Was this the student?

Really? and send 1000's of kids and teachers into a panic over nothing.... I see property taxes going up to cover all the court costs....

I suppose I should feel bad for the kid but really, anyone with an annoying ringtone or stupid lyric voicemail greeting probably deserves to go to jail.

"So sorry about the jail and all, but it was for a good cause."

So if Erv was happy with that event, maybe we should call in more threats so he can do more tests.

How bad do you have to rap a TV theme song for this to happen? I'm serious. Its a will Smith song. It was basically written for kindergartners to be able to earworm it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of thought crime. In the name of defending gun rights, we instead now incarcerate people based on what we think they might do. Congratulations, conservatives. Nice jerb.

As somebody who is hearing impaired myself, I'd like to take a moment to remind folks to be careful of what they say. This article is a good example, where the lyric "And all shootin' some b-ball outside of the school," is heard as "...because I'm going to kill all the (expletive) at my school." I can't certainly be held accountable for the consequences when I have to report that you shot your neighbor and are pleasuring yourself with saw blade, all because you couldn't properly enunciate "I can't answer the phone right now, leave a message after the beep."

I don't see any liberals demanding we arm the Police like they were going to war against Chluthu. I don't see any liberals exempting the police from murder laws and felonious assault laws and armed robbery laws.

Was the conservative folks that required police departments to self-finance their departments with money confiscated from anyone carrying more than $100 cash in their pockets. Hell, in a lot of states, you can have your house forfeited if the guy that owned it before you sold a doob to an anonymous informant in high school.

Judging by some of the ring back tones ive heard i can see this. I called someone the other day and they picked up in the middle of a fight. I was patiently listening to 'fark you biatch, you farking dumb slut' for like 30 seconds thinking i had never heard that song before i realized.

I know that I vote Republican because all my HS teachers, administrators, and counselors did, and strongly encouraged me to do so. The schools are a hotbed of conservative thought.

A shiatty cell connection (what 19 year old uses a landline?) coupled with poor enunciation could turn "shooting some b-ball outside of the school" into "shooting some people outside of the school".

Unfortunate occurance, but these days I'm not surprised.

Now for the politicizing of a completely unpolitical event:

See Republitards this is where your gun rights have forced us to go, now we have to arrest and detain children because we're so out of touch with reality that we misconstrue everything as a threat to our precious snowflake liberally Democratic future leaders of America.  We should really be grooming them to be dependant on the kind of level headed government bodies that would overreact to an early 90's sitcom theme, not forcing them to think for themselves or question authority, because only death and destruction comes from that.  You stupid conservatives, with your moral code that doesn't match ours, will lead to the killings of all of the children, and then where will we be huh?  That's right, we'll have to actually deal with the fact that the world is imperfect and there are no simple answers, and we might actually have to take some responsibility for our own actions and we have rights in this country and shouldn't have to do that.

Well you Democraps are trying to change things, why can't we have things the same as they were in the 1950's when minorities knew their place in this country.  It's your fruity-loop free thinking ideas that's ruinin' this country, what with your helping the disenfranchised and givin' away all our hard earned money to illegal immigrants.  How'm I sposed to defend my property from all those drugged up reefer headed hippies without my guns?  What those little hooligan children need is a good beatin' to learn 'em some respect for their elders.  Hell, I'll even agree with you that boy should be arrested, not for sayin "gun" or some imaginary threat, but for listenin to that damn "rap music".

/Looks like the voices in my head agree, this kid should go to jail.

I remember my first prison rape.  I was pretty green and had an awkward shiv made from a toothbrush and a screw that kept wanting to fall apart so you had to hold your thumb over the back of the screw.  All while you are forcing the struggling cell mate to have sex with you.  It was difficult, but I managed to bend my arm far enough behind me to stab him a few times when he wanted to stop.

Yesterday the parent said he was suing the old man with the broken window because his kid was intimidated (and yes, his face was hurt- why didn't he just cite that?) And today the family is getting a lawyer because this kid was embarrassed? How about you sue for an apology and the admission that it was a great theme song?

Do people just sit around every day waiting for something to happen so they can take someone to court?

Pretty much, it seems.

In ST:TNG, Captain Jean-Luc Picard says to "Q": "I know Hamlet. And what he might say with irony I say with conviction: 'What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god!'". Well, what Shakespeare might say with ...i dunno, sarcasm?, I say with conviction- "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."

I see critical thinking and deductive reasoning aren't your strong points. Allow me to therefore spell out my position in one and two syllable words you can understand.

Because a child can so easily get a gun (due to our utter failure to keep them from people who should not have them) instead of dealing with things in a reasonable manner, we have to overreact to every threat because even a small child can create a large bit of havoc because hand guns are so easy to obtain.

The right wing is the ones who block any attempt to restrict guns.

Is that palataable enough for you? I ask, because it was incredibly difficult to get that down to two syllable words.
