I would be really upset if aspartame was added to dairy products and wasn't on the label. Not only does that shiat triggers migraines for me, but I have a right, as does everyone else, to what is in what I eat and drink.

2013-02-28 11:59:12 PM
I already made my public comment about aspartame. It makes me really, really, really, really dizzy for about 24 hours. Weird shiat.

Oh Corrupt Republican Dairy Industry, is there nothing you can't do

2013-03-01 12:47:27 AM
So what will happen is I think, the same thing that happened with growth hormone.

1) Most of us will reject buying any milk at all for a while

2) Regional local dairies will start providing ASPARTAME-FREE milk, which will immediately outsell this crap

3) Walmart, Safeway and their ilk will wind up with the crap

4) Moar subsidies to the asswit dairy farmers who now can't sell their milk

5) Subsidized exports to third world countries

6) Dairy farmers complaining about the government taxing them too much and Obamacare while they keep getting more subsidies not to produce milk because the public has said go to hell with this aspartame-in-milk BS.

Generation_D: 3) Walmart, Safeway, Costco and their ilk will wind up with the crap

Walmart and Costco sell an AMAZING amount of the milk in the US.
If even a small fraction of their purchasers started complaining and protesting, enough to generate nation media attention, you would find that Walmart can trivial change a supplier, just by its own regulations.

THE farkED up part about this, is that it isnt even making more milk, but just marketing. FFS
Label then, give us the choice ... sweetend vs regular ... let the market sort it out.

This pisses me off. Not the idea of using artificial sweetener in milk, but not wanting it on the label. People need to know what is in something and then can decide if they want it or not. Plus I can't see the harm of it being on the label. Artificially sweetened drinks are VERY popular in the US, plenty of people have no issue with them.

I can see no good reason for wanting to not have it on the label.

However on the other side, this author is quite clearly an anti-sweetener alarmist, so I'm not sure that her claims are valid. I haven't the time to read the original petition, but it is quite possible he's overstating the issue (like they are ok with it in the ingredient labeling, they just don't want to have to do anything special other than that).

The sad part is that the excuse for us not knowing is due to "trade secrets"

It's milk. How can it be a secret?

I fail to see how people find artificial sweetener to be edible. Stevia, sucrolose, aspartame, or whatever, it all tastes like ass to me.

Yo dawg! I heard you like complex amino acid chains, so I put NutraSweet in your Sucralose and both of those in your milk, so you can have chemicals in your chemicals when you're ingesting chemicals!

2013-03-01 03:14:58 AM
I wonder why this is happening. Is it because the dairy industry (or some other food-related industry) is planning on doing something worse, or if they already have done something worse.

Or, maybe, they're testing the system to see what they can get away with.

Ever since I heard about Monsanto and their bullshiat with the seeds, I'm starting to get a little more paranoid than I was before.

Except aspartame will still be on the ingredients label. This just allows them to sell it as 'milk' and not 'reduced-calorie milk' or a 'milk product'.

I already avoid Breyer's because they are a "frozen dessert" (they can't legally call their stuff "ice cream" because, it isn't).

IMO, if these industries are going to slip their sh*t into our foods then we have every gawd-damned right to know what's in it. That was why everyone backlashed against "pink slime". Regardless if you think "It's Just Beef" or not, it's the fact that they've been sneaking that stuff into our beef supply in secret for over a decade without telling us.

Our government will grant the milk industry's request.  This s because the government has defaulted on their job to protect the citizens and now only care about deep pocket donations.  If you think Obama is any different than previous presidents, you haven't been paying attention.

FTFY. Seriously, I agree. Not only do they taste bad, I don't believe we should be consuming them in the first place. I predict many years down the line people will point and laugh at our time saying how stupid it was that we ate this garbage.

Breyer's used to be 'premium'-ish ice cream. Very few ingredients in each. It's only recently that they made the changes that make them unable to actually call it real ice cream anymore.

Especially since there's already a sweetener to put in milk to get kids to drink it -- it's called chocolate.

If you want good ice cream, you should be making it yourself. It's not hard.

2013-03-01 04:04:53 AM
FTA: IDFA and NMPF argue that nutrient content claims such as "reduced calorie" are not attractive to children and maintain that consumers can more easily identify the overall nutritional value of milk products that are flavored with non-nutritive sweeteners if the labels do not include such claims. Further, the petitioners assert that consumers do not recognize milk-including flavored milk-as necessarily containing sugar. Accordingly, the petitioners state that milk flavored with non-nutritive sweeteners should be labeled as milk without further claims so that consumers can "more easily identify its overall nutritional value."

This shiat is so bizarre that it's not even English, anymore. We can "more easily identify the overall nutritional value of" something by not knowing what's in it? Huh?!?

I realize that it's always been profitable, but when did selling transparent nonsense to people become so utterly consequence-free?
