For those whoare wondering, and have not finished last weeks Caturday, my toe isn't broken, but I have a bad bone bruise to the joint. And I have to rest it for a bit, so that I don't make it an actual fracture.

Eli has been applyong a warm catpress pretty much every night, while I sit and read, and then when he lays with me in the bed. Now if he would only help me out with my other bruises!

Hope tigerose's bone bruise heals well & as ASAP as it can, also hope others are well.
Threadjack for mention of a hoo-mon whose time ran out Tue; retired Major Tom Griffin, a Doolittle Raider who lived here in Zinzinnati for a long time. He was 96; had said maybe he could make it to 100. He spoke to our amateur radio club, among many many groups, back in the last century when we still met in Cheviot (where he lived). Hibernians got their act together for 2012 St Pat's parade & named him Grand Marshal. Saw this in yesterday's paper & had a sad, even tho he was almost as old as dirt. I'd been able to talk to him on landline after St Pat announcement, just about a year ago; he was still bright & cheery. He'll be missed; was one of the Really Good Guys.  Now just 4 Raiders remain. Public memorial service Saturday week, complete with B-25 flyover; must be elsewhere then due to prior commitment to the Still Living.

Full moon week. I never believed it, until I worked in a middle school!

It was a bizarre full moon Monday for me.  Couldn't find my keys, had to use my back-up set which do not have the electronic lock/unlock fob.  Then I stopped by FedEx to mail back something & couldn't find the Sharpie I just knew I threw into my purse, had to borrow theirs.  The last stop before work was the Post Office to pick up a parcel.  While standing in line I stuck my hand in my sweater pocket & found the Sharpie & the small dryer ball I was missing for 2 weeks or so.  Yeah, it had been about that long since I last washed that sweater & put it away.  When I got home that night I found the keys on the counter where I usually put my purse.  Damn.  I swear the gremlins hide things from me when they get bored.

I never felt the impact of a full moon until I started working at the Shelter, and now I don't doubt it at all...  Tuesday was my night to deal with its effects - Fozzie started acting sick, and I didn't want to leave him home alone all night, not knowing what was wrong.  I was able to get permission to bring him, so I packed us up and off we went.  It rained all day, and I'd gotten an e-mail that the basement of the house had flooded - we are a LEED certified building, complete with rainwater reclamation tanks, one of which burst during the day.  Thankfully, I didn't have to deal with that.  Instead, I get to deal with a kitchen fire.  Fortunately, not a grease fire, but an icky nasty burner drip pan caught fire, and the flames were higher than the pot on the stove.  I grabbed a pitcher of clear liquid and tossed on the flames, and only later realized how lucky I was it wasn't Vodka!  That dealt with, I went to bed, only to be awoken three times by hang-up calls on our hotline.  Really, people?  Turns out Fozz wasn't sick, but has a very sore spot on his rib cage - he's moving okay and aspirin seems to be helping, so thankfully it does not appear to be anything serious (I think he had his ass handed to him by Zara, finally!).  The hang-up calls at work were a man who finally asked what kind of help we provided and when I told him we were a women's DV shelter he hung up and didn't call back - poor guy was probably in need of a place to stay, but didn't hang on long enough to get any information to help him...  So happy I am off the next two weekends!

Oh no!  I think Abby would kill for some bacon.  I have to hide it in the microwave until we are sitting down to eat because I have caught her running from the room with a piece in her mouth more than once.  She is so sneaky and quiet, she will even do it when I am in the room with my back turned.

I wonder if the effects are still lingering, as far as sleep goes...  My zoo spent all last night running all over the house, knocking stuff over and wrestling on the bed, so I got no sleep at all.  I'd lock 'em out, but that'd mean crating the pup - he will cry all night for his kitties if he's in the room and they're not.  He spends all day crated, so I guess I opt to forego sleep so he won't be confined???

It did, thank you. Managed to get moved in one day too, but the couch and chairs we bought were taken over a few days before, which made things easier. Spent the Wednesday before moving day at the new place awaiting delivery of our new beds and after they were set up, I made them so that would be one less thing to do on Saturday. Some friends of helped us move & managed to get everything in one trip too. Jeep + trailer & a full-size van, all packed to the gills made that possible.

Since they have been hanging out with my sons cat Max they have both become more like house pets and less like heathens. I am worried that I may have to take Max with me to the farm when we get the house done. I don't want to steal their cat but he loves my two and I am afraid he will be sad when they leave. Max has taught them to snuggle, beg for treats, and crawl under blankets on the sofa. They sleep together and groom each other, when Li-Ion "attacks" him he lays down and lets him win the wrestling match.

OlderGuy:
.. being old-school, wouldn't that be " Howdy Doody"?

I made that originally for Micromedic back in 2008 or 2009. She was very active in greeting newbies
that showed up in the thread. Since she was essentially saying "Howdy", therefore, "Howdy Duty" seemed
to a reasonable play on words.

Neat.. liked all the animals together( no spiders) also.. being old-school, wouldn't that be " Howdy Doody"?

Hoomin spelling, yes. Cat spelling, not so much. :-D

Ah... works for me .. and given how some words have been 'repurposed', probably for the best....
Glad the move went well.. bought this house in '89.. first house... had a BASEMENT !!  I was a 'mechanical stuff' type packrat.. hated to throw away things that could be used.. there are many households here that had their heat/ ac systems 'resurrected' via 'Tim's Basement'.. and I am deep into 'unpacking' now.. loaded a 14' Uhaul truck 'to the rafters' with used electronics stuff.. took it to a recycling company nearby.. they found some stuff they needed in the load.. no charge !.. It was my goal to never move again.. good neighborhood and neighbors.. no crime.. had some drug houses here when I moved in.. they were gone within two weeks.. pays to have friends in law enforcement.. big friends... hope you found a good place...

Bathia_Mapes: John Buck 41: Bathia_Mapes: lilyspad: Bathia_Mapes...how did the move go? All settled in?

All moved in, but I'm still unpacking and shelving books. Got roughly six boxes to go and I hope I don't run out of shelves before then.

I must've missed your post last week about moving. Always stressful. Hope it went well.

When I was...(doing the math)...22, I moved...(more math)...4 times in...(math again)...12 months. And during that stretch I got married to Mrs. Buck #1. Can you say hell?

Mrs. Buck #2 and I have accumulated a few things over the last 33+ years. The idea of moving again (not that we're going to) absofarkinlutely terrifies me.

We were in our previous apartment for close to 10 years. It's amazing how much stuff you can accumulate. I had to be hard on myself and go through all my books (and trust me, there were a lot of books to go through, over a 1,000) and weed out any duplicates or books I hadn't read in years. I sincerely hope that we won't move again.

Moving is something I do not handle well.
My mother has lived here since 1961, and is the very embodiment of how possessions eventually become "stuff".
Stuff she'll never wear again. Stuff she'll never read again. Stuff she doesn't know what she even kept.

Speaking of homes...
The other day, I discovered that the sewer line out to the municipal sewer trunk is blocked.
I suspect a magnolia tree that mom planed right over the sewer 20 years ago is the culprit.

We finally got a guy out to rooter the line today, and he had no effect.
So they're sending out a guy tomorrow with a camera they can snake in to see what is causing the blockage.
(I don't know how many megapickles it has)
I can always pee in the bushes out back.
Unfortunately I have to hop in the car and try to find a public restroom for #2.

There is a major hospital about 1.5 miles from the house, so with enough lead time, I can head there.
The restrooms are clean, and they're available 24 hours. It's not perfect, but it has to do for now.

Well, as the as the tuxedo cat earlier said..."Ruffle my whiskers and fluff mai tail!"
I learned something today.
The hard way. Which, of course, makes it stick so you don't have to learn it again.

You know those metal things they have in the bathroom stalls that dispense those tissue paper hats?
The ones that are kind of a cross between a sombrero and a Daniel Boone hat with the tail in the back?

I learned this evening that those are, in fact, not hats
!!!

When I came walking out of the restroom wearing one and folding a couple to take home with me
to give to the neighbor's kids, one of the housekeeping ladies tore into me.

"What de hell you doin' there??", she shouted at me.
I figured I was in trouble for taking extras...
"Just taking a couple of these hats with me to give to the neighbor kids. I'll pay for them if that's necessary."
She chewed me up one side and down the other and said if she saw me there again, she'd call security.

A guy has to poop occasionally, so I guess I'll need to find me some other place to "take care of business"
until we get this sewer fiasco rectified. Ergo, no hushpuppies for QJ for the foreseeable future.

I had the same problem at my office about 5 or 6 years ago.  My office is in a house that was built in 1920 or so.  Well........the guy from the city came out with his camera toy when the regular rooter guy couldn't clear the line to the sewer.  We ended up calling a better rooter guy he recommended with a more powerful pressurized cleaner-outer.  I don't think I will ever be able to get that picture out of my head.  I have never seen a 6" diameter and 2' long "log" that extruded out of the pipe before the pressurized water flushed everything out.  Damn!

Got ambitious and made my kittehs a box like that...figured I could build it cheaper than buying.
Set the finished product in front of Riktor. He studied it for a moment, then stuck his elegant little black paw into one of the holes and fished out the fluffy ball with great precision.
Then he gives me this look- "Alright...now what?"
He was not as entertained by the process as I'd hoped...

Told him I still wasn't going to buy him an X-box however...

"Elderly" means "like an elder" so as long as he seemed older than the person who wrote the article, the term is appropriate.

Bathia_Mapes: akimbotoo: I hope you enjoy your new place!

Oh, trust me, I am enjoying it. In unit washer/dryer, so no more trips to the laundry room, granite countertops, large kitchen (well, large for an apartment), quiet and well-managed too.

I got my kitchen demoed yesterday, it came out pretty quick. I was removing the water line from the dishwasher when the pipe broke and blasted me in the face with water. My son laughed so hard at me! I made him run out and shut off the water! The water hit the ceiling and I picked up 5 or 6 gallons with the shop vac to get the floor dry again.
I have drawer bases for all the bottom cupboards, no more reaching into dark spaces. I picked out granite tile for the counter tops, and white subway tile for the back splash. I changed my mind on the color of the counter, I wanted the black from Lowes but I was afraid it would be too dark and look funny with the white back splash. Then I found some nice salt and pepper tiles at a discount lumber yard, they are perfect and only 2.29 a tile. I like a bit of a retro look to my kitchen and the grey look will work better for me. I will post pics if I ever get them done!
And Tom's Mom: Forrest
farm9.staticflickr.com
She makes no attempt to leave the garage, she is happy to stay inside and sit on boxes, when I get stuff moved into the house I will have to build her a little condo out there. Flower goes out and walks around the pasture and then climbs back to the roof to get in, Oma Cassie is happy to sit on the roof and enjoy the sun and breeze, she walks out the door sometimes but seems happiest on the roof.

Your new kitchen sounds really nice! I'm glad the kittehs have settled in a bit. Hopefully all will continue to go smoothly!! :D

Bathia_Mapes, am reminded of the 2-day move due to distance between Bad Homburg near Frankfurt am Main to W Berlin, a lifetime ago.  Army shipped a quantity of stuff for us (didn't have to put it on the duty train ourselves) but we did tie a steamer trunk on top of our Opel station wagon & stuffed both trunk & station wagon to the gills for the drive over, via the transit Autobahn (for which Flag Orders were always needed). This was Thanksgiving weekend of 1973, like fools we camped at Helmstedt (western end of Autobahn) as we feared to leave Our Stuff unguarded overnight. Yes, it was nippy!

This guy was my best friend for almost 20 years. He didn't wake up today by phoenixannwn.  So it's back seat of car instead of front.  Numerous scoldings on imgur for letting him ride loose, didn't count comments but there were many.  99.44% (not quite) of comments were condolence & sympathy. Also, those eyes!

This is probably all wrong, but I've found that letting them ride loose reduces their stress level...going by the amount of protesting.
They've ridden often enough that they usually will just park themselves in the back window and enjoy the scenery.
Sometimes it even takes a bit of coaxing to get them out of the car when we get home*...they're quite comfortable where they are, thank you.

* they only get to ride free on the homebound journey...otherwise they DO have to put up with the carrier.

If I only have Gremie in the car he rides in the crate to wherever we are going and then he gets to drive home. He sits in my lap with paws on the steering wheel. I know that is a big no,no, but believe it or not he doesn't get in the way and he is quiet and content.

I was on my way in last night from the farm, I stopped at the Jack in the Box to grab a quick meal and I saw this little fluffy one in the drive through.

farm9.staticflickr.com
It ran behind my truck and to the curb to escape the black and white bull dog that was tracking it. I rolled my window down and called to her but she did not respond, she was focused on the dog across the parking lot. The line moved and I had to pull forward but I saw the car behind me open their doors to try to get her in their car.

I would have just opened the door and scooped her in but, I don't have health insurance right now and I had this in the truck with me waiting for her kids meal:

Holy cow... was so tired last night, went to bed at midnight (instead of 4:00am like usual).  Slept until... noon!  Walked & fed Buddy (getting thoroughly rained upon in the process -- it's a monsoon out there today!), had a light snack, then Bud & I decided to lounge in nice warm bed with Mr. Gunk just a little longer.  You know, because, rain.

It's 1:30 now and I'm just tucking into a nice hot coffee.  It's been a long week.  So nice to wake up to Caturday!  A cuddly husband is nice to wake up to too, but since he was sick last night, he's still sleeping.  :)

Happy Friday to everyone.

I think the grass on the cat's side of the fence is decidedly greener.  Those cows look awfully suspicious about what they're planning to do next.

So spoke with the vet tonight, apparently Rocky is QUITE hyperthyroid. Going to pick up a weeks worth of meds and then she'll get an exam to see how she's doing before we start fiddling too much with the dose. I'll have to get a copy of the results so I can keep down here in case she has problems during the week and go to the vet here.

She's probably about 1/3 or so the size now. She might actually be able to fit in the box if I still knew where it was 3 years later :p

When my Dad passed away my sister and I went thru his book collection and I was quite surprised to find about 2 cases of them were mine to begin with. After we were finished we took all the leftovers to the Soldiers and Sailors Home, they were given about 20 boxes of books (hardback not paperbacks). The guys were really happy to get them. I still donate my books when I go thru my shelves.

CrankiAndi, you may need soundings made on your property to ensure the absence of sinkholes like the one the bedroom somewhere in Tampa fell into. Plumbicon says "they's likely alligators at the bottom of them sinkholes" --
Very sad tale on evening news. B**** of less than legal age let her pit bull Bruiser starve, twice. 2d time to death. There was vid; poor dog was so emaciated & weak he needed to be euthanised. She was cited 1st time but let go & given the poor dog back to complete his torment. This is in next county north; believe she's been cited again.  Should be more than cited; should be jailed.

Happenstance

I went to buy cat food.
A flat of cans,
In the form my cat likes.

And there,
I found two shelter cats.
Depressed.

No longer looking to interact.
Ignoring their toys.
Sad.

Their sorrow
Radiates.

They no longer believe,
No hope.

They are not kittens.
They are so handsome,

It makes me weep.

I want to put on their cages a sign,
"Take me home,
I am for you!"

One surrendered  cat speaks.
I am older, wiser,
I know what comfort a lap holds.

I know how to make you laugh,
Lift your spirits.

My fur is thick.
I can hold your tears.

I want to be with you.
No other will do.
Take a chance,
Take me home.

Into your heart.
There I will dwell.
All the days of my life.

And at the end of my days,
I will keep you in my heart,
Cherish you in my soul,
And rejoice.

I did not think it wise to be caught in the cab of a small s-10 with a feral kitty and playful dog.

Can't say as I blame you. Hope someone helped out the poor little thing, though.

All shelters should print that out and tape it to the cages of adoptable cats.
So many wonderful furry old souls out there just waiting for loving people to take them home and be their bffs.

Feel free to repro and share.

May do just that.... Knew there would eventually be a reason to justify the cost of buying new printer cartridges.

CrankyAndi: Glad it is Caturday.....I need it.  Was a kick ass week....something was due the client, was promised on 2/28, was delivered on 2/28....I received 'good job' from coworker who said 'it succeeded because of you'.  I'll take that

Good to be home with the kids.  I know i am in Tampa and is warm here...but we are to have a high in the 50's tomorrow and Sunday.  For us, that is chilly

Snowing here for the 4th weekend in a row. Granted it isn't blizzardlike conditions a la the weekend of 2/8-2/9, but still getting gaw dam tiresome.

tigerose: Happenstance

I went to buy cat food.
A flat of cans,
In the form my cat likes.

And there,
I found two shelter cats.
Depressed.

No longer looking to interact.
Ignoring their toys.
Sad.

Their sorrow
Radiates.

They no longer believe,
No hope.

They are not kittens.
They are so handsome,

It makes me weep.

I want to put on their cages a sign,
"Take me home,
I am for you!"

One surrendered  cat speaks.
I am older, wiser,
I know what comfort a lap holds.

I know how to make you laugh,
Lift your spirits.

My fur is thick.
I can hold your tears.

I want to be with you.
No other will do.
Take a chance,
Take me home.

Into your heart.
There I will dwell.
All the days of my life.

And at the end of my days,
I will keep you in my heart,
Cherish you in my soul,
And rejoice.

Yeah, teh ink is insanely expensive, but if you print and distribute? One adoption would be worth it! Two, fabulous..Three, I might just explode! :)

I think I will print this and put it on the cage. I wonder if anyone in my neighborhood knows the poet laureate of Caturday?

sherpa18: Bathia_Mapes: I had to be hard on myself and go through all my books (and trust me, there were a lot of books to go through, over a 1,000) and weed out any duplicates or books I hadn't read in years...

Me too - and that was ~ 6 years ago :o)

If I had my way sub-humans that do that should be locked in a cage themselves with no food or water.
