What are you talking about? There was probably tens of liters of good single malt that got flushed with all that garbage. There's always at least a little of the good stuff in the various blends.

Chivas Brothers - which employs  employed 600 workers at the plant and produces the world's second biggest-selling brand, Ballantine's - said it was investigating an accidental release of spirit.

My very reaction - thousands of liters of Ballantine's that won't be choked down by folks, what a friggin' shame. Also, explains why the sewage workers reported it. "Sweet Jesus, we were just down here mopping fetid shiat and rancid urine, when this horrifying reek inundated the area - it was intolerable! We couldn't place it, as it didn't smell like anything we'd encountered before, so that's when we called you."

My first reaction upon opening the article and seeing that sentence.  I was actually worried there for a bit.

Now, if it had been The Famous Grouse (my go-to value whisky), I may have shed a tear.

Zeb Hesselgresser: Any Fark EngineersTM want to guess what that would have done to a anaerobic digester or the other processes in the STP?

I suppose it depends on what the dilution volume would be or if that slug of spirit hits the plant at once, especially if it was high-proof neutral spirit.  The biologics at those plants probably don't do well when the input has the ABV of wine or worse.

Came here to say this. Still, it's thousands of litres (sic) in tens of thousands of gallons of water, so it's probably diluted too much to a lot of harm.

I prefer Whyte & Mackay's marriage blend - but I do admit to being decidedly low-rent.

In Ireland this isn't a problem, it's a common occurrence.  You can't have water without it having an alcohol content.  Otherwise problems occur.  People become...sober! O.O
