I assume that the reason to want to deport rather than just let them leave is 'dont want to miss a chance to beat them up, humiliate them, strip them of any belongings and money which will get 'lost', process a load of unnecessary paperwork noone will ever read but which you can bill the gubmint for, and basically make some money off them somehow'?

Krushinator: Maybe this is what you get when you have for profit prisons? I doubt sheriff Joe's tent city runs on his kindness and jovial laughter alone. It baffles me that anyone would want a corruptive economic incentive to lock up as many people as possible for as long as possible. Granted, I've only seen "Cops", but from that it seems like in the US you can get arrested and jailed for the most banal and trivial technicalities. Failure to appear? Jail. Not obeying officers every whim? Jail. Driving while black? Jail. Not dropping to the ground within half a second after officer tells you to stop? Tazing, then jail.

For profit prisons are for long term confinement.  He runs the Marcopia County jail, which is only for people either awaiting trial without bail, or for short term confinement of less than a year (like someone serving a four month sentence for DUI, as an example).

County jails typically don't operate at a profit, although there are some exceptions.   Here's a financial report for Marcopia County jail for 2012.  Most of their funding comes from the "general fund" - taxes.

Rich Cream: I would love to take them in the tents," Arpaio told POLITICO.

He also said that he's concerned the released detainees will flee the country.

Bottom line, Arpaio said, "If they're here illegally, they should be deported."

I just realized how much this shows he is only concerned with "control" and has no concern with laws for society's sake nor is he concerned for justice. Only that he gets to say what happens. Whether it's going or staying.

Actually, what he wants are the funds that he can dole out to friends to keep up his Tent City, which provides a healthy kick back to his retirement. Joe doesn't have too many more years, and once he gets out of office, the sharks are going to circle considering he knows exactly where the bodies are buried, and in Maricopa politics, that isn't really much hyperbole. He can't provide services, he can't investigations contained, he is useless, so he has to keep as much dirt close to his chest, and then get the f*ck out of Dodge, so to speak. He retires, he goes with stacks of files and photos and recordings, and hopes to Hells he has paid the right folks off, and that they'll stay paid off, to keep his ass safe until he can wander away somewhere quiet.

Joe's schtick is not just steering Maricopa County cash to the right folks, but the use of his department to keep a lot of folks out of hot water, and to put pressure on folks who are making things dicey for his clients. Let's not even parse that "supporters" but simply put, he is looking out for the interests of folks in Maricopa who pay a lot of cash for he and his departments' services.

For all his bluster about searching for "illegals" he was mighty mum on the subject while the housing boom was going strong. Yes, there were busts here and there, but you didn't see the efforts to run down day labor until things started to sour, and the housing units going up were far enough out that the folks who were padding out his salary were out of the game. THEN it became an offense to be Driving While Brown. Never mind that a lot of the folks that they harass are citizens, or residents. Never mind the folks that the Sheriffs Department pull over and simply let go because they have the right connections. Never mind the crimes that are simply pushed under the rug because someone has enough cash to "suggest" a better use of the Department's time.

Joe plays up his enemies. So much so, that he doesn't have an office at the Department, but in a bank, four blocks away, and on the upper floors of a bank building, and paid for by the Department and justified because Joe, for all his bluster, fears for his safety. Not really, but it plays to the rubes, and it lets him do his work without intrusive eyes who aren't entirely vetted.

Joe is not just dirty, he IS the filth that infests Maricopa. And he will stay in office until he retires, because folks are going to spend a LOT of money to keep him there, because at this point, they can't have him feeling insecure, because then he might be persuaded to drop files and hints, and the Feds might just let him sing for a deal, and no one in Maricopa wants that. There is way too much money involved.

Ah, I stand corrected. Back to assuming sheriff Joe's just can't live without attention then. Still doesn't explain why it seems to be so incredibly easy to be arrested and detained in the US, though. Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

What good is a police department if it doesn't arrest anyone?  The whole chain is about justifying spending money.  Even for-profit prisons are paid for with tax money, and we spend an enormous amount on police, jail, and prison.

Follow the money.  The private sector has just responded to a boondoggle that was created by local, state, and the federal government.
