neilbradley: Aaaaaannnd..... STILL don't care for the most overrated guitarist in the universe. No wait, that's Eddie Van Halen. Make Clapton #2...

Really?  I can maybe, sort of see how someone could think Clapton is overrated, but EVH?

Your favorite guitarist must be one of those ultra-obscure players that never perform in public because it "cheapens" their art, or you're way into 20-minute sweep-picking wank fests.

I'm Latino and I was raised in Kentucky.  I went to high school with this kid who openly described himself as a racist.  He claimed to have relatives in the KKK, went on racist rants, had the skinhead look and referred to all minorities as "the enemy".  But, and here's the funny part, he was totally cool with me.  He would say stuff like "the enemy is sneaking into our country and taking all of our jobs and our women...except for Zerochance.  He's cool".  It was farking weird.

I never knew what went inside this kid's head, but there was obviously a disconnect between the beliefs he claimed to have and what he honestly felt deep down inside.  I'm not the biggest Clapton fan, but I do have respect for the man's talent and considering his undeniable love and admiration for the blues and black blues musicians, I would say he has a similar disconnect.

Clapton is a complex man.  He is full of contradictions.  He is obviously not a hardcore, unapologetic racist, but it's definitely surprising he would make racist comments, considering he built his fame and fortune largely inspired by the work of black blues men.

"Hi, I'm George Harrison. This is my super uber racist and best pal Eric Clapton. Hari Krishna!"

Something doesn't make sense here when you look at it this way. Conservative? Yes. Made hateful remarks while out-of-his-mind wasted? Yes. But a racist person? I just can't see it.

FarkedOver: Virtual Pariah: Old man has talent yet maintains old, outmoded worldviews?

Sounds about par for the course.

Yet hypocritical when he has amassed a fortune emulating black musicians. Even going so far as to cover Bob Marley (a Jamaican), ya know the same group of people he ripped on for being in UK and not being white.

I don't see it as hypocritical. I see it as par for the course for the times.
Elvis got big by bringing the "black music" to the whites. I'm sure lots of his fans were of a racist worldview.

People like EC and Elvis were the gateway to acceptance for the music of the african communities. I don't expect them to embrace all aspects of a culture. Frankly, I think you are being idealistic in expecting him to be perfect.

Accept their flaws and enjoy what they have contributed. You don't have to agree with everything they think.
I can listen to Cat Scratch Fever and still think Nugent is a pants-shiatting chicken-hawk. Doesn't change the quality of the music.

Just don't go to Clapton for race relation advise.

Crewmannumber6: FarkedOver: js34603: You know who else is rascist? Your grandparents, but you still love them right?

/he's a pretty shiatty rascist, what with the effusively praising and giving credit to so many of the black blues musicians who influenced him
//and that tribute he did for Robert Johnson
///and that album he recorded with BB King

He said some pretty vile stuff, but he has a black friend so it's all good!

There's no doubt the man can play guitar, but he obviously harbors some nasty ideas and is not a decent human being.

It's not necessarily racist to not be keen about having your country overrun by third world refugees, If that's his complaint.

the term "wog" and "coon" aren't exactly nice terms to use to convey that point.

explain, please.

"I used to be into dope, now I'm into racism. It's much heavier, man. farking wogs, man. farking Saudis taking over London. Bastard wogs. Britain is becoming overcrowded and Enoch will stop it and send them all back. The black wogs and coons and Arabs and farking Jamaicans and farking (indecipherable) don't belong here, we don't want them here. This is England, this is a white country, we don't want any black wogs and coons living here. We need to make clear to them they are not welcome. England is for white people, man. We are a white country. I don't want farking wogs living next to me with their standards. This is Great Britain, a white country, what is happening to us, for fark's sake? We need to vote for Enoch Powell, he's a great man, speaking truth. Vote for Enoch, he's our man, he's on our side, he'll look after us. I want all of you here to vote for Enoch, support him, he's on our side. Enoch for Prime Minister! Throw the wogs out! Keep Britain white!"

And where is the source of this?

Yeah, I've never heard this about him.  I always thought he idolized the american blues legends.

When he was heavy into alcoholism, somebody of a different race tried picking up his at-the-time girlfriend backstage, so during his concert he made some dumb remarks. Then everyone decided to take an alcoholic's words at face value because he was famous, and clearly thinking correctly. Because alcohol is a truth serum or some shiat.
