Didn't they confirm Aqaeda or however you spell their name was part of the rebels?

2013-02-28 09:05:40 AM
Reality:

Mr Kerry said the US would provide direct support to rebel forces in the form of medical and food supplies.

The promise of direct, non-lethal aid to the rebels represents a shift in US policy on Syria, correspondents say.
However it falls short of providing the weapons and munitions that the rebels say they need to defeat government forces.

That was too easy. Fark's trolls are getting amazingly lazy.

Yet, if this goes green more than one person will fall for the headline. Sometimes it doesn't take much for successful trolling.

It's just a giant "f*ck you" to Iran, that's all.

I was under the impression we were pretty good at picking winners. We're just not so good at making sure our winners don't put brutal dictators in charge.

HOW CAN YOU HAVE ANY PUDDING IF YOU DON'T REBEL AGAINST THE RULING REGIME?

Excellent.  A surrogate war with Russia.  It'll be like old times!

I think this is a colossally bad idea. Assad's regime needs to end- the atrocities and loss of life and culture are tragic- but we have constant reports coming from Syria that the opposition movement is fragmented, disorganized, and rapidly being overshadowed by paramilitary forces for the surrounding regions. I'd like to see the US to maintain humanitarian/ food. medical aid assistance to the region only.

Kerry had a lower GPA than Bush.

lol

Which is, in fact, what we're doing.

I thought we did this under the table by looking the other way when U.S. weapons manufacturers broke the arms embargo.  That Nicholas Cage movie lied to me.

No, you misunderstand. He's going to provide non-lethal weapons to the rebels. Mostly mace and tasers.

I think the issue is that people we're not fond of were already picking winners that we wouldn't be fond of.

The headline is kind of misleading.

And by kind of misleading, I mean completely false. Not true. Incorrect. Wrong.

Given that, it was inevitable we'd end up with a Muslim President.

No, he promised official government aid, which is usually medical assistance and food.

We're already selling them guns, because guns are a private business that doesn't require permission from the government, and if you think counting the modern wars where we haven't sold them to both sides will take you more than one hand you need to look at history a bit closer.

We're jut going to give them Medical Aid and Food and stuff.   Because in the US, we have no problems with money.   Or budgets.   Or spending.   It's all good.

Then the rebels, who are now free from paying for food and medical supplies....can direct the money to buying weapons from Middle Eastern Countries.   Good deal.

Heck, most of the weapons are probably surplus Libyan weapons that somehow got out of Libya.

And somehow found their way to the rebels.     But that was NOT the US or its allies.   Nope.

Meh.  They've already started infighting since they're clans etc.  This might end up working, but likely it'll end up like Egypt where if anything it got worse on many levels.

What happened to the sequester?   Arming Libya.  Expansive drone base is Niger.  Yet we can't re-tool our own aircraft carriers with proper maintenance because there is no money?

2013-02-28 11:27:03 AM
sit there, make sure Assad doesn't use chemical weapons, give diplomatic support to the rebels... dunno about getting actively involved.

2013-02-28 11:36:40 AM
If what I've been hearing recently is accurate, this is the right move.  The rebellion is getting Hijacked by the Salafi's (Syrian Islamists) because they are better organized and funded than the secular rebels and they are getting weapons from their benefactors  This is no longer about equipping rebels to defeat Assad, it's about equipping the *right* rebels so after Assad falls Syria doesn't go the way of Egypt.
