I get it. When you get a little older, you realize that unless you want to die in your late fifties as a half crippled overweight drunk with all kinds of cardio and digestive problems, you scale back your alcohol intake and save it for special occasions. Nothing wrong with this.

This is one of the reasons people are living longer nowadays. I'll forgo a night with Jamesons now to spend one with Jemesons at 85.

Cauchy_Riemann_equations: Where I work the thing to do is go out on Friday and get so drunk that you sleep until Saturday in the afternoon.

I'm something of a pariah because I don't do this and go home to my family on Friday night.

I don't think less of them for doing it. I just don't recover from drinking very quickly. I do think it's a waste of money though.

I'm guessing you are 30+ and your co-workers are 20 somethings. amirite?

Hobart is by no means an alcoholic, but since he first started sneaking the occasional beer with his school friends aged 13, alcohol has been an ever present feature in his life.

Hmmmm

Tat'dGreaser: You don't drink, good for you. Don't act like you're better than someone else. It's like there is no medium with these people, you either have to drink all the time or not at all. It is possible to drink once in awhile.

This actually sounds pretty reasonable:

"I felt like I was just drinking all the time, and I'm at a point in my life where it's probably not doing a world of good for my health, so I thought I'd just go without for a while, and see how it goes."

I actually like the promotion of temporary sobriey since it avoids the all-or-nothing quality of complete temperance.  Gives the person a chance to reset their body and change their habits.

Not drinking is not a personality flaw. Being a pain in the arse to those who like to drink, that's the personality flaw.

Knowing a few people who are actual alcoholics, drinking a pint in the evening isn't one, unless it's a point of vodka.

Some people can't.

"Round, round with the glass, boys, as fast as you can,
Since he who don't drink cannot be a true man.
For if truth is in wine, then 'tis all but a whim
To think a man's true when the wine's not in him.
Drink, drink, then, and hold it a maxim divine
That there's virtue in truth, and there's truth in good wine!"

Getting drunk isn't the entertainment, it's part of the larger activity that is the entertainment. Tailgating before a sports event or concert, hanging with friends at the bar, going to a party, etc.
