(The Hollywood Reporter)   Cable executives who apparently have never heard of TIVO or DVRs refuse to follow the Netflix "House of Cards" model of releasing shows all at once, still want to make "water cooler TV"   (hollywoodreporter.com) divider line 65

kab: Eh, releasing episodes 1x per week doesn't bother me at all, as I typically won't watch back to back of the same show in 1 sitting anyhow.

I guess the only positive thing I can say is that so far, HoC has been quite good (5 episodes in), and I do hope it's a sign of further similar programming from Netflix.

It also makes me wish that HBO wasn't tied to cable.   Eventually, they'll wish the same thing, if they don't already.

Total HBO Subscribers: 114 million  http://hbowatch.com/hbo-subscribers-now-total-114-million/
Total Netflix Subsctibers: 33 million  http://ir.netflix.com/

HBO charges $10 per month; Netflix is $8

I think your predictions of its eminent demise are premature.

Compounding the problem: Even at $8 / month, people still torrented House of Cards.

I am Wee Todd Ed:

Frank and the cadet buddy from the citadel had a homosexual encounter, right?  They get drunk in the library and kind of get waaay to close for two buddies, y'know.  NTTAWWT...just wanted to confirm that I didn't read more into that scene than what was there.

That's what I got from that scene as well.

Is Claire having the artists's kid? I watch this show but I'm usually doing something else while I am, checking email, cleaning the ho ...

No.  She's thinking she might want a kid.

Binge viewing is my preferred method for watching shows, I'd rather marathon watch an entire season in a weekend then drag it out week after week all season long. When watching week to week you're inevitably going to miss an episode here or there, that's no big deal with a sitcom but if the show has a continuing story arc then missing one episode can throw off the rest of the season.

As far as this "water cooler experience" they're talking about, I think they're giving it way more credit than it deserves. In my 48 years I can't remember ever sitting around at work discussing what we watched on television the night before, not in any detail anyway.

Karate Explosion: I also hate getting screwed by investing a few hours into a show, and then having it get canceled. I'm looking at you, Fox

ABC.

Wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only Farker that watches it, though.

That's on top of the mid-tier digital cable television subscription and digital cable box lease, so realistically HBO costs the end-user around $90 a month. Netflix only requires Internet access, which can be had for as little as $20 a month.

So you're looking at $100 for HBO versus around $30 for Netflix. There's a reason I don't pay for cable TV but do pay for Internet and Netflix.

I mis-typed if that is what you think I was inferring then.   I'm simply asserting that HBO GO would make an absolute killing in the US if it weren't dependent on a cable subscription.   Especially if the trend continues of people getting all the shows they want w/o a cable bill.

They've done it elsewhere

It's on ABC Family. I never would have payed any attention to if I hadn't found out it was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino who also created The Gilmore Girls.

Another here, after it was mentioned in another Fark thread.  I like me some snappy dialogue.
