In the end it all evens out. When it's your time to go, you're going to go.

So eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die.

What the secret to immortality may look like

2013-02-28 12:42:11 AM
The article's a bit misleading as to the type of person that lives longer. It opens by saying that "Older people blighted by pessimism and fear for the future are more likely to live longer," though the following paragraph says that it's "those with low expectations for a "satisfying future" actually led healthier lives."

To me, those are two very different things. Someone who has a fear of the future or a general negative outlook is not the same as someone who has low (or no) expectations for a satisfying future. In my opinion, the healthiest perspective that someone can have is to have no expectations which, it sounds like, describes the group in the article that were found to live longer, healthier lives. If something good happens, it's a pleasant surprise. If something bad happens - well, that's a bummer, but you deal with it and then move on.

In contrast, people who are "overly optimistic" have significant expectations which are probably rarely, if ever met. So, it would make sense that if you spend so much of your life with these grandiose expectations that never materialize, you'd be more likely to become depressed by the fact that their life didn't turn out how they hoped and expected it would. And depression leads to illness and poor overall health. So yeah.

/Did I overanalyze that? I think I might have.

A pessimist is sometimes pleasantly surprised, but an optimist is sometimes fatally disappointed.

The way I see it, if you don't have high expectations, you'll never be disappointed.

Hang in there dude, things have a golden habit of getting worse.

People seem to like making fun of optimists by intentionally confusing them with idiots. Below are some examples:

"That ice looks thick enough  to walk/ride/drive on."
"I'm sure I can dive far enough  of  this cliff to avoid those rocks."
"I've  done this a hundred times before and nothing has ever happened."
"I saw them do this on tv/youtube."

See, if you expect the worst, then you're prepared for it unlike all those fools hoping for the best only to be crushed by reality. Plus you get the "See? Told you it would all go to shiat."

Pessimists have low expectations, and that means they are subject to much less stress. For example, I never expect people to actually do their jobs properly. That way, when people I'm dealing with f*ck up, I'm not actually disappointed. They're just doing what I expect everyone to do. I have no reason to expect that they would do anything right, so I'm prepared for that. But when someone I'm dealing is actually helpful and does their job properly, it's like I won the lottery and the universe is smiling on me. You get many more good days by being a pessimist than by being an optimist.

Blackadder: No, I thought I'd get my headstone done.
