So, there I was, just minding my own business; I saw this article about heavy water use. My mind went directly to Robert Oppenheimer.

I used to work at a call center. I was a quiet guy. Never said much. Every now and then there would be a lull in calls, and I could scour the web and read stuff on the internet. Some other guy in his cube next to me saw that I was fascinated with what I was reading.

"What're you reading about?"

"Heavy water." (more specifically I was reading about the Norwegian Heavy Water Sabotage)

"The stuff that makes that scum on your shower door."

..."No, not hard water... (he receives a call, cannot continue to listen). I receive a call. A couple of minutes go by.

He chimes in, during the next lull "Yeah, I mean they have water softeners and stuff for that. You've never heard of heavy water?"

"No, it's heavy water, stuff used in the development of nuclea... (he receives a call)"

The whole time someone else is eavesdropping. They think I'm also talking about hard water- "You don't know what heavy water is?" (with a tone in their voice of disgust, as if I'm a farking dolt).

There is nothing in this world more irritating to me than communicating something perfectly, but the other person has the perception that you are the idiot, when they think you are talking about something completely unrelated from the subject at hand. I never said another word to another employee while employed there. Thankfully my time working at a call service center was short lived.

This thread is why I love fark. It restores my faith in humanity that other people actually know shiat, the really really obscure shiat (relative). I love that people on here are usually a couple standard deviations above the mean. It's as if all those people I never got to discuss the cool stuff with in life are all here. I wish I could meet and talk to people like you in the real world all day.

If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of this headline.

Nexzus: Every time I read about water shortages in our friendly neighbour to the south, I get a little bit more anxious.

Though it seems Brazil has the lead in fresh water supply, followed by Russia.

No wonder they say not to drink it.
