Hah! They are using a Guide from 1980s! DC has restarted their universe 5 times since then.

A cool note: when they finally made avengers/JLA crossover, they said DC earth was 5% larger, accounting for the extra cities that Marvel didn't have.

Rather than trying to imagine what they all have in common, I just mashed them all up into a single entity in my mind, and ended up with a 300 lb. masked blowhard with a guitar that's always swinging into places with a grappling hook and a rope. Sort of like a villainous El Kabong that's always falling through insufficiently reinforced floors.

The idea that a crime-riddled hellscape such as Gotham City could exist in New Jersey does not require much suspension of disbelief.

"Deal with it".

I always thought metropolis was NY City, and Gotham was Chicago. That makes much more sense than jersey. There aren't any orange hicks with bleached hair in the batman comic books, for one...

Both Metropolis and Gotham City were clearly modeled on New York. They are huge, dangerous, fun. You could explain the darkness of Gotham City by suggesting it is part Chicago, part New York, with bits of other Northern cities thrown in when wanted or needed.

Metropolis has a newspaper named the Daily Planet, which was inspired by Toronto's Toronto Star which is where one of the co-creators  of Superman worked (the Canadian guy, Schuster) , and also employed Ernest Hemingway.

But the companies can send their heroes where ever they like, even into thousands of alternate time lines and universes, which they do regularly.

Even Spiderman now lives in alternate worlds and alternate times.

Mind you, Bruce Manor has to be in a prosperous suburban or rural area, like Connecticut, or the better bits of Westchester County, New York, or even the better bits of New Jersey, seeing as not all of the Garden State is a toxic waste dump like the South Jersey Shore and Leonardo, New Jersey.

I can live with Gotham City being in Jersey. My English and Dutch ancestors from Monmouth County were exiled from or emigrated from a well-to-do region of rich Dutch and English farmers. It is still quite prosperous today.

Many of these ancestors moved on to Virginia, to New York, to New England before their descendants wound up in Canada as my more recent ancestors. Many remain in New Jersey, or have settled across the continent.

Since Gotham City is named after Gotham (a town in England famed for its Famous Wise Men of Gotham, who were ironically, famous fools) and has another real world model in the Dutch period in New Amstersdam and thus the Netherlands, and was probably settled by the same Dutch and English settlers as Monmouth County, New Jersey and other areas near to New York, it seems fair enough that Batman and Wayne Bruce's territory might be in New Jersey rather than New York, possibly in many of those alternative worlds that superheroes inhabit.

Further reading: Why do we call it Gotham anyway?

I could definitely see Bruce living in either Somerset or Morris County.
