Uh, doing the right thing absolutely does make one a hero.

You could be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if you kept that bag. Taking things of that kind of value without trying to return them is not only theft, pure and simple, but is a crime.

Maybe a more positive spin - every act of decency doesn't merit front page news - and $11,000 being dropped isn't exactly a common thing to happen too.

Haha. Right now, in Augusta, GA, a lawyer with the local Public Defender's office is facing charges of Theft of a Lost or Misplaced Item. Seems she and a friend found a $10,000 ring outside a local Cracker Barrel. Her friend went inside to possibly find the owner of the ring. When no owner turned up, she said she would turn it in to the police. Days later, the ring was reported lost/ stolen. They found her friend on the security footage of the restaurant, and her friend fingered her as being in possession of the ring and intending to turn it in. There wouldn't have been any charges filed, except for the fact that she took the ring to get it appraised, and solicited offers for it.

For what it's worth, 11,000 $1 bills would take up less than half a cubic foot

(.004" x 2.61" x 6.14") x 11000 = 705 in^3 = 0.41 ft^3

That's something like two or three shoeboxes; you could hide that much in the space under the seats.

This. I had no idea that having a disabled kid made doing the right thing more impressive. In fact, I'd argue the opposite. Not having a disabled kid and doing the right thing makes you a hero. You see, having a disabled kid and one deployed in the military tells me this woman is used to making sacrifices. She has a very good idea of what is important in life, and what is not. People like her are used to hard work and rise above petty theft and such moral quandaries as to whether she should return the money or keep it.

Molavian: Good for her.  I'd have kept it. $11k would be a nice chunk of change to have fall into my lap.

IME people tend to think/hope/fear that other people have values similar to their own.  If I were to drop $11,000 on the ground, I think I'd like to do it in front of subby's house.

Isn't that money all tracked and counted?  It's not exactly manna from heaven.  You'd probably be committing some Federal crime being caught trying to spend it.

Brinks should have done more than simply call to say thanks.  It would have cost more to them than losing the 11k (probably insured), but they should have fixed her car (or bought her a new one) and maybe set up some kind of fund for the disabled kid.  The ROI from the good PR would have been huge.

It's money.  What does decency have to do with it?  Are you actually claiming that people are 'decent' in their pursuit of cash?  The CEO who cuts half their workforce to increase shareholder value?  The police officer who ruins someone's life over a petty incident?  I could go on and on with examples of people throwing decency out the window to feed their families..
