The joke was that Switzerland is constantly portrayed as a universal ownership country where every man and woman of military age keeps a military-grade firearm in their homes, fully automatic, and there are no restrictions on gun ownership. Fox News is aggeregiously guilty of this.

In reality, if the United States had someone propose the kind of laws that the Swiss have on gun ownership, you'd have people frothing at the mouth claiming that Obama was going to take their guns and revoke the second amendment.

But, since you want to get into this, there are far more factors than gun ownership at play in Switzerland versus Chicago. Perhaps it could have something to do with the fact that they have very accessible healthcare, a relatively homogeneous population and distinctly non-violent culture, and there are numerous civil and social support structures in place which we like to label as "EVUL SOCULIZM" in the US of A?

The reason the Swiss have much lower crime rates, violent crimes, and murders than we do has absolutely nothing to do with gun control.  It has everything to do with another very simple fact.

First Amendment, actually. It's your constitutional right to willingly lie to the American Public.

Wait.... I thought that since no one had guns in Switzerland; no one got shot in Switzerland.

On a serious note; Europe is having a hell of a time with knife violence. Apparently, you can take the gun out of the hand; but you can't take the murder out of a person.

/ I wouldn't be surprised if they started banning sharp, pointy things

Hey, it's got guns, and guns are all of a sudden very, very *BAD* since Sandy Hook, so it doesn't matter what the actual facts are.

Except, of course, if you are lying to the government.  Then it's a felony.  Just ask Martha Stewart.

Or maybe the fact that the entire country has a population lower than just one of our major cities?  2.2 Million gun owners v. 200 Million gun owners means a whole bunch fewer crazies.

Define 'Europe'. Knife violence is an outlier only in the UK. Which, by itself, is vastly less murderous than the US.

Turbo Cojones: Or maybe the fact that the entire country has a population lower than just one of our major cities?  2.2 Million gun owners v. 200 Million gun owners means a whole bunch fewer crazies.

Even adjusting for population, the US has more violent crime and gun crime than other countries in the first world. It's a lot more to do with our culture, and our lack of access to socioeconomic support systems - such as universal or low-cost healthcare, mental healthcare that doesn't place a life-long stigma on people, and lack of social support programs that are easily accessible and channel people away from being dependent.

The UK-US comparison is a special case worth mentioning, because their criteria of "violent crime" incorporates much of what the US considered to be petty crime.

That's why we use homicide *RATES* instead of total number of homicides for comparison purposes.
