I can think of worse ideas.

We are a super power. They come here if they want to talk.

They shouldn't get the cookie. They haven't shown anything except bad behavior. After Crazy Castro dies however, now that's a meeting we should have.

And the usual reaction at the UN is to walk out before he starts speaking.  Which seems childish to me.

Is he?

I'm sure that would cause some conservative heads to assplode.

So, yeah.

2013-02-27 07:56:04 AM
How about no.

First, he won't be safe...you'd probably need an entire division to keep him safe.  Secondly, it will only prove he's a secret Muslim.

Ok, I was kidding about the 2nd part.

With allies like that, who needs enemies?

Massive cranial trauma from the GOP if he goes, so sure.

Iran is a lot less powerful.. and dickheads in their government aside, I suspect the Iranian people are friendlier.

Meet him in Switzerland. There's no way you can keep him safe there. You could have the meeting on Air Force One Nd some nut would take a shot with a shoulder rocket.

Pretty sure that there are some pretty significant differences between our relationship with China at that time and our relationship with Iran now.
No one was worried for the physical safety of Nixon, for one.  Or at least I don't think so.

2013-02-27 09:12:50 AM
Absolutely, President Obama  should visit Iran.

I can't wait to see what kind of dress they photoshop onto him!

Most of them, sure.  But there are definitely some wingnuts there, and too many of them are in government and/or have access to rocket launchers.

I don't see what Obama going to Iran would gain us, so...no.

2013-02-27 09:20:03 AM
I think it's a good idea (minus any potential security concerns).  It shows how serious we are and that we've exhausted EVERY diplomatic option before we blow their shiat up.

You could really cause a cranial meltdown from the conservatives and have Ahmadinejad and Obama meet in Russia or something.

I don't think holocaust-deniers have any right to be taken seriously.

2013-02-27 09:27:41 AM
Every elected leader of a country deserves to have an open line of communication, even your worst enemies. Problem is that Iran isn't the real player here, they are just a proxy for Russia. Dealing directly with Iran misses the point.

Yes, as long as it's a one-way ticket.

Maybe he could call for a summit someplace neutral. Maybe Urfa, Turkey?

The president is well-protected everywhere he goes. But yes, a visit to Iran (with a beefed detail, as in any diplomatic visit) would spark a million freeper-style posts. "See? Now if every kindergartner had a rocket launcher, we wouldn't have to worry about these things!"

They already try to conflate the Secret Service with your redneck buddy in the double-wide being able to have unfettered access to serious weapons.

I'd rather skip that whole 'debate.' Iran and DinnerJacket come here.

2013-02-27 09:39:11 AM
If Obama were killed on a visit to Iran it would be a good opportunity to finally get rid of some of our aging nuclear weapons arsenal.

2013-02-27 09:41:17 AM
You're assuming he hasn't been there already. Until Obama comes out and releases evidence that he doesn't secretly fly to Iran on a regular basis, I have a hard time believing he isn't secretly doing just that.

Secret Obama is secret.

I wouldn't do anything to legitimize the Ayatollah.  You cannot stop Iran's eventual development of a nuclear weapon but the boycotts deny the comforts of the modern world to people who want them. The inevitablel course for Iran is a youth revolution against theocratic oppression. Time, information and human nature always rule, eventually.

2013-02-27 09:48:40 AM
Mr. Dinnerjacket will be leaving office fairly soon. Perhaps his successor will be somewhat less of a dick. In that case, a meeting would make a lot of sense, but I'd definitely get him to come here.

Isn't this what we have Joe Biden for?

Seriously, this is a country that only 30+ years ago, thought that invading a US Embassy and taking US Diplomats hostage was acceptable government policy. I don't see that the current leadership is all that different.

What, "ally" and "shiat-stirring money-sink" aren't synonymous?

2013-02-27 10:18:21 AM
This would in no way be a "Nixon Goes to China". Nixon was not only a well-known staunch and vocal anti-Communist, but the US recognized the Nationalists in Taiwan as the legitimate Chinese government. The whole point of "only Nixon could go to China" is that only someone who has 100% street cred with Side A could make overtures to Side B without being ripped as a traitor or appeaser. There is no parallel with Obama and Iran.

That said, someone needs to farking go. We've been farking up our Iran policy for over 60 years. Time to start doing things right for a change.

Also, I wouldn't fear for Obama's safety in the least. No way in hell Iran would let anything happen to any US president who visited. If anything they'd fear for his safety even more, lest it become a casus belli for an attack.

2013-02-27 10:18:34 AM
Yes.  No question - best opportunity to show the Iranian People what democracy could look like if they decide they want some of that.  Yeah, it's got a down side but those arguments are from a bunch of losers.  I think just about any American President should be able to walk into any country in the world and stand tall (cue the pictures of Obama bowing....it's predictable).  The Iranian People, by and large, want American Democracy (the buyer should beware....but it's a shiat-load better than what they have) and like the US.  Bomb 'em and watch that admiration turn to hatred....the dicks that run the country can't keep 'em cooped up forever.

Similar to the US assisting Saddam Hussein about 30 years ago, then deposing his government recently.

The first paragraph is all too true... however... he might be so far opposite Nixon's situation that it could still work. After all, the Republicans aren't basing their criticisms of Obama on anything rational. No matter what he does, he'll be called an anti-American traitor by some subset of the Republican party for any given action or inaction. So he's really got nothing to lose in that regard.

If he did actually step foot in Iran, I anticipate there would be some heavy naval presence in the Gulf and a lot of planes ready to fly. More Perry Goes to Japan than Nixon Goes to China.

To make unit-level decisions regarding the security arrangements of each individual diplomatic facility around the globe.

It usually happens after he starts denying the holocaust or levelling outrageous insults on every western nation in the world.  A childish reaction would be to yell out and interrupt him. A mature reaction is to refuse to listen to such drivel.
