Diet Dr. Pepper in my opinion is the best tasting diet soda out there and does taste just like real Dr. Pepper.

Diet soda tastes horrible. Dr. Pepper tastes horrible. Making diet dr pepper taste similar to the original shouldn't have been hard.

Dr. Pepper is a sweet, wondrous elixir. Diet Dr. Pepper is its demented half-sibling best kept in the basement.  Caffeine free diet Dr. Pepper is an affront to God and Nature.

Funny you say that. I travel a lot overseas for work. Getting the Diet Dr. is very difficult in the US but even more difficult overseas (mexico 7-11 ok, some british equivalents...ok, about everywhere else...probably not). The alternative is Coke Zero (especially in central and south america). I notice a trend, if I ask for a Diet Coke or Coca Light, they will almost always point me to a Coke Zero but if a woman asks for a Coke Zero, they will ask her if she wants a Diet Coke. All my coworkers noticed this when I pointed it out.

A Coke Zero with fresh lime squeezed in it is pretty tasty. I will admit that.

Still confused about what the fark is special about Coke Zero, Dr Peper Ten and Diet Pepsi Max?  Aren't they all just diet soda sweetened with Nutrasweet just like thier regular diet offerings? (which for me also means I can't drink them because apartame gives me horrible intestinal cramps)  Now diet coke with splenda wasn't bad until it disappaered, and Pepsi One is okay when I can find it, but what I really miss is Diet RC (NOT Diet Rite) which you could find only in th emidwest and used ONLY splenda as a sweetener (instead of Splenda mixed with Ace-K to give it more of the "diet" flavor people now expect).  To me it was nearly indistinguishable from regular soda.

Well if you make a low/no calorie soda and don't call it diet it will sell better to health conscious men who may avoid something with diet in the name cause "that stuffs fer women." Same reason light beer is light beer and not diet beer. Dr.pepper 10 even tried marketing it explicitly.

And there's also shelf space to consider. If you sell 37 versions of coca-cola that's 37x the amount of room your product will take up in a stores. Pushing smaller competitors or potential competitors to bottom shelves or out of the store completely.

I thought the deal was that back in the day (the 1980's) when they came up with diet coke they couldn't figure out a way to make it taste like a zero calorie version of coca-cola that actually tasted ok, so they just made it into a completely different flavored drink that people would drink. I thought coke zero was an actual attempt to make a drink that tasted like real coca-cola but was 0 calories.

Diet Coke is the New Coke recipe with artificial sweetener. In fact, New Coke was based on Diet Coke.

Hmm, will give it a try - I like Dr Pepper a lot, but can't drink much of any drinks with sugar in them nowadays - a can/glass at most within an evening (and regular Pepsi not even that it is so sickly sweet), but Diet Dr Pepper (or Zero, whichever they were) really sucks, whereas most other diet versions seem to be reasonable tasting nowadays (even if they don't often taste a huge amount like the sugary versions in some cases).

I was a big Dr. Pepper fan, but eventually the sweetness just became too much. I've gone over to coffee. Soda water if I want something bubbly.

Make strong coffee and mix it 50/50 with seltzer.

Bubbles make me giggle.
