Much like Nip/Tuck, the first season of American Horror story was great, but then it fell off the rails and started sucking in Season 2. I don't know if even Kathy Bates can revive this show.

Ryan Murphy has great ideas, then seems to just lose interest.

Even if the show didn't fill my "batshiat crazy" tv niche, I'd still watch it just for the acting clinic that Jessica Lange has put on throughout its run.

A couple of plot lines were unsatisfactorily resolved (I'd love for them to do a tie in episode - the alien children, whatever demon possessed Sister Mary Eunice, The antichrist from season 1 fully grown, whatever fun things they have planned next season all coming to a head somehow but that will likely never happen) but considering how much stuff they threw at the wall last season, they did a good job holding it up as long as they did.

Season two was pretty bad. It lacked focus and theme and was simply too fractured from the beginning. Season one centered around the house which was the universal explanation for all the events. In season two there was simply a barrage of weird shiat going on at the same time with no real explanation of why a Cabin in the Woods like gathering of evil would be converging at this place other than "Hey aren't mental institutions creepy places for weird stuff to happen."

Also, the dance number. Really?

I thoroughly enjoyed Season Two, but not quite as much as Season One. That's not so much a knock on Two as it is a compliment for One.

And yes, the dance number. That was one of the most chilling moments of the season. An excellent look into Jude's decaying mind, with a deceptively upbeat tune. It was awesome.

I thought the dance number was great.

though I do agree that Season 2 started clumsily and ended a little too neatly, I thought everything in the middle was generally good, even if it was way unfocused. Next season would benefit from toning down how much is going on at one time.

S1 was alright, but a little too drive by a desire to shock.  It was as if they were finding excuses for taboo subjects or gore, and not in the way that you interrogate those subjects (like a good horror film writer would do).

Even so, Connie Britton.  What a cutie!

I'm a little surprised to see Fark seriously discussing American Horror Story.  My wife and I watched most of the first season because it was a hilariously bad trainwreck.  The relationships were creepy, the actors were awful, the characters were thoroughly unlikeable, and there wasn't a single stereotype the writers didn't like.  Early on we really forgot there was any horror element whatsoever; it was more like just a soap opera where half the characters were ghosts.  What kept that show going was trying to predict in what ways the writers would out-do the previous episode's nonsensical twists.  It was kind of like watching a stupid teenage girl write a horror plot; it was amusing as long as the effort was sincere.

Is the discussion here kind of "meta" where the awfulness is an unspoken given, or do people actually have expectations for Season 3?

This is 'torture porn'.  I can't believe so many people watch this shiat, and I don't understand why more people aren't outraged and complaining to the cable network that airs this garbage.

/watched several episodes of Season 1 before I had to give up
//very disturbing, and not redeemed by actors, most of whom were horrible in S1
///wouldn't watch a second of S2 if you paid me $1000

That seemed to be the consensus.  I talk to Mo Ryan from Huffington on Twitter and asked her how, after the disaster of Season one, she was recommending season 2.  Her take seemed to be that that it was so off the wall but in a weird focused way that it was worth watching.  Also said just skip the parts of season 1 I missed after dropping out and just watch season 2.

0/10.  dragonchild did it better.

I thought the middle of the season was great, but the first episode felt like way too much crammed into one episode (which was made worse by some of the subplots not really adding up to much) and the post-Mary Eunice episodes wrapped things up a bit too neatly and uneventful. I thought it somewhat odd that almost all the reviews I read seemed to praise this season as being more streamlined, but I thought it was always a bit of a mess, even at its best.

Probably because I meant every word of it.  We did watch most of the first season.  It was fun, in a Rocky Horror Picture Show sort of way.  Calling AHS "torture porn" means the troll probably didn't even watch the trailers.

Yeah, sometimes I want to delve into the mind of these trolls. I see two scenarios the led him to call this show torture porn: One where he lied and knows absolutely nothing about the show, yet still feels the need to critique it. Or the other where he did see it but has no idea what torture porn is. It must have been a phrase he heard about another horror film he didn't like so now every bad horror film is torture porn. It was like saying "Nickleback sucks, I just can't stand that gangsta rap shiat."

I loved both seasons of this show, and I don't care who knows it. Sure, it's a whirlpool of crazy with way too much going on, but that's what makes it fun. I love the mini-series format and the recurring actors. My only concern is that they threw every horror trope in the books at this season (except witches or zombies, although Arden's creatures basically were zombies), so that leaves their options limited going forward. This season could be about witches (Salem witch trials maybe?), but what's next? They could have done a whole season on possession or serial killers, but they've already tackled those two. Oh well, I'm along for the cracktastic ride.

The show so awful it came all the way back around to fascinating.

/much preferred Season 1 as a cohesive focused storyline and Connie Britton was hot
//Season 2 had some solid individual stories and acting but was like "Mad Libs---Horror Cliches" story wise...Nazis, Aliens, Serial Killers, and Demons Oh My!
///the music number was awful, felt completely out of place, completely unnecessary to show Jude was nuts (pretty clear at that point)...it was like George Constanza appearing in a Friends episode
/V yes I'll watch season 3

Hater will hate, but I'm another that absolutely enjoys the show... it's a fun approach to recycle the actors with different roles.

Absolutely loved the "death" scenes with the angel of death spreading her wings, of season two.

The cliffhangers are raw material to revisit in future seasons if they so choose, but these are as close to a full season of a twilight zone style show with the ambiguous endings.

Looking forward to season 3.

It's one of the very few "newer" shows that I bother with.

This.  One of the biggest problems I had with S2 was that that there were too many subplots and that many of them didn't end up going anywhere to satisfaction.  It seemed like Ryan Murphy just threw everything at the wall to see what would stick, although I thought the ones that did were really well done.  Looking forward to S3, but who knows that left to explore.

Season Two is set in an asylum and largely based around the theme of sanity.  So the show, itself, being a bit schizo seems appropriate.  No?

Not trolling, I absolutely found it very disturbing. And that's having watched at least half of Season 1, as well as several seasons of Nip/Tuck, so I'm not unfamiliar with Ryan Murphy's perspective.

The lead ghost's wife will have a torrid affair with a midget, and the lead ghost's son will try to circumcise himself, have a baby with a porn star, and become addicted to meth. I've seen it all before.

Ryan Murphy can't write more than one, maybe two seasons before he just starts jumping sharks and phoning it in.
