The explosion of fracking has created thousands of North Dakota jobs and imported single young men by the truckload to fill them. That's helped the state perform better on two major indicators of teen pregnancy: Rates go down in places with low economic inequality and a high ratio of men to women. You might think there would be higher rates of teen pregnancy with more seed floating around, but research suggests that women are more likely to delay pregnancy when they perceive future opportunities to climb the social and economic ranks-to get an education, a job, and a committed partner who benefits from the same. By the numbers, the prospects for North Dakota's women look good: North Dakota now has the third-highest ratio of men to women in the U.S. and the oil boom has pushed North Dakota's overall unemployment rate down to 3.2 percent.

Counterpoint:
Alaska has the second lowest income inequality in the states. They also have the highest sex ratio of men to women. They also have the 20th highest teen pregnancy rate.

Contrast that with Massachusetts, which has the 4th highest income inequality, the number 1 lowest sex ratio of men to women, and the 5th lowest teen pregnancy rate (same links).

The study the article cites is by country, not by state. As we found out in the thread yesterday, most places are quite different from America, so correlations elsewhere may not necessarily apply here and vice versa.
In short, the reasons for North Dakota's pregnancy rate are probably more complex than mere fracking. As the article notes: "In 1988, far before the Bakken oil field was tapped, the state's rate was the lowest in the nation. It could help that North Dakota is very large, and sparsely populated."

North Dakota State University president Dean Bresciani attempted to freeze federal funding for two of his own professors to stop them from starting a comprehensive sex ed program for at-risk Fargo teens.

WTF is wrong with these people??

Fracking would only decrease teen pregnancy if it leaked dangerous chemicals into the water supply that increase infertility/decrease sex drive.

Hmmm
8% of North Dakotans fit in the 'teen' category - about half are women so lets say 4% of the population have the potential to become a 'teen mom' each year.
The population of the state of North Dakota is about 700k which means that at any given time there are about 28,000 teenage girls... and 666 of them are getting pregnant in a year.

That is over 2% of teenage girls get knocked-up each year. That's terrible! Statistically that means that at least 10% of women in North Dakota are getting pregnant in their teens.

Pumping high pressure fracking fluids into a uterus, perforating the formation and then pumping in proppant to wedge everything open might not be the best environment for an ovum.

Or it's just more civilized.  The article goes on to explain it has had the lowest rate even in 1988 way before the boom.  The boom has nothing to do with it.  North Dakota also has the lowest violent crime rate and lowest credit delinquency rate of all manner of credit including home loans, credit cards, etc.  2% unemployment is not new to ND.  It's always that way.

They are not rednecks, they have a very high standard of living, very high education and literacy rate, and tend to vote very independently in elections with many Democrats elected.   No, instead it's really very simple.  It's hard to live in ND and be a slacker.  They leave.  Over time being an imbecile becomes socially unacceptable there.  Fargo is repeatedly scored very high on the "best cities" and "best economies" and is nowhere near the oil boom.  Fargo is a very nice city.

/not in ND
//too cold there

I wonder if they accounted for the somewhat recent increase in male presence in the state thus increasing the overall population and ultimately bringing down the amount of pregnant teens per capita.

You can't increase the teen birth rate if you don't import more teens.

Yes, because someone has to say the obvious responses.

As a teenager in Fargo in 1988, I can attest that frigidity was also a significant factor.

I attribute it to the availability and social acceptability of prostitutes around large groups composed primarily of high income men.

I would've thought it is the same reason that teen pregnancy is also low in Nebraska as well. Because access to cows are more widely available than teenage girls.

Too cold to get nekkid?

I could buy it.  I'm female and get uncomfortably cold at any temperature below 72°F unless I'm in layers of clothing (e.g., wool, flannel, fleece and other not-so-sexy apparel).  Ain't no way I'm going to get naked in the winter and do the nasty in the back of some roughneck's Chevy.

You should have read a little further. Table R-3.4 shows that the only state with lower teen pregnancy rates among non-Hispanic Whites than North Dakota was Minnesota. In other words, there is something else (not just race) about North Dakota that results in lower pregnancy rates . . . unless you believe that non-Hispanic Whites in other states are a different race than non-Hispanic Whites in other states.
