I guess I can actually see their point, though - you can get good New York style pizza almost anywhere these days (including Chicago), but good Chicago style barely exists outside Illinois.

Which is not to say that it doesn't exist at all. A pretty darn good place recently opened here in LA, and it's a great addition to my personal repertoire of take-out food I'm happy to eat. But for the most part, good deep dish is tough to find anywhere but Chicago.

Chicago Deep Dish/Stuffed pizza is not traditional "pizza"... it is what it is, yes, maybe even a cassarole. But, if you are in the mood for it, and go to a place that makes a tasty pizza (Giordanos for instance), then it is good. There was a place up when I lived in Highwood, I think it might have been in Highland Park, that was an awesome deep dish, sauce was excellent... this was like 15 years ago though, so, don't recall the name or if they'd even still be there.

But, beyond that anyway, Chicago Thin-crust demolishes NY style thin crust.

On a third note, hopefully GreggM shows up to this thread, since I tried making his recipe for a chicago style thin crust pizza, which while the pizza "construction" wasn't bad, but, the sauce recipe I tried didn't pan out well, so, want to get his advice on that.

Care to share? I'm a recent L.A. transplant who grew up in Southeastern Wisconsin...In a town close enough to Chicago to have a Gino's East location. And holy CRAP do I want a decent Chi-town deep dish lately. I'd love to know where to get one. Vienna Beef dogs with celery salt and nuke-green relish, too.

Anyone who's had a Gino's, Edwardo's or Giordano's gets it. Everyone else can shut the hell up.

If you're in Champaign IL stop by Papa Dels, my favorite deep dish place even beyond places in Chicago. Some of the finest pizza I've ever had, they even ship frozen pizzas internationally to alums.

This plus Pizza Margherita are what I think of as pizza. Once the toppings and sauce outweigh the crust and cheese, it's a pie.

See... "cities" is a silly way to think about this.

Most any suburb in the NY/NJ area is going to have better pizza than pretty much the rest of the country. I'd take my hometown of 33,000 people over Boston any day of the week, having lived in both places.

New York (and the surrounding area) is pizza mecca not because it has THE single best place (it probably does though) but because in the city, there are two great pizza shops on every block.

The list is a fail without Cleveland. Parma, an inner ring suburb, has the most pizzerias per square mile of any city on earth. Cleveland's contributed more members to the American international pizza competition team than most of the cities on that list.

I went to the Giordanos by the Pennisula in November and the pizza was fantastic. Chicago has great restaurants.

I don't know about pizza in Providence Rhode Island, but the Italian meals in Federal Hill are pretty damn good. Everything on Atwells Avenue. I'm too busy eating meals there to care about pizza.
