Supposedly Russia is one of those places where if you smile too much, people think you're crazy.

If it looked like winter all the time where I live, I'd never smile either.

It's just cultural. The western style of smiling at complete strangers is seen as insincere and pointless. Hence the stereotype of the cold, unfeeling Russian. However, they are some of the quickest people at becoming friendly, and all of that will change, sometimes in literally 5 minutes.

Maybe we should do one like mexican does day labor, or black person holds basketball, or British person has bad teeth, or maybe we could take pictures of water being wet. Man that would be comedy GOLD.

And yes, smiling like an idiot at strangers is considered insincere and a sign of weakness!
That man is no American salesman, he is a Russian!  He does not need your fake smiles.

I agree it's a cultural thing. I've grown up in Central Europe, and to me one of the strangest things about Americans is their nearly continuous grin. It's like you needed to show everybody all the time that you are f*king happy and successful but instead you look f*king stupid.

I am one of those people that smiles all the time. It either makes people want to punch me in the face or they instantly like me. It's a nervous thing though, I smile when nervous and have a lot of social phobias. Hence, I smile constantly, which invites people to talk to me. It's a way I consistently torture myself for having shortcomings. It is the worst with really awful dates though...

It makes perfect sense when you think about it though. Why should the cashier at the grocery store fake being happy to see me? Their job is to get me through their line as fast as farking possible. And that's what they try to do here in Russia. Now, the Russians' complete inability to figure out lines, that's another story

My mom laughs constantly during casual conversations with strangers. It's farking annoying and me and other people have told her. She doesn't understand how forced it sounds.

How about "go into Fark threads we're not interested in and post about how boring and pointless they are"?  I bet THAT's a fun game.

I have the same problem, unfortunately. Except I only look at people when I have to avoid the awkwardness of having them know that I am intentionally ignoring them. I usually walk either with my head down or eyes on the ground. When I can't avoid someone any longer (like a grocery clerk) I smile and try to seem friendly, but my nerves don't ease up till I'm out the door. It's a weird broken kind of feeling.
