(Vulture)   So, Seth MacFarlane was a disaster as Oscar host, right? Well, let's check the ratings... oh... guess we'll be seeing a lot more of MacFarlane in the years to come   (vulture.com) divider line 85

This had little to do with MacFarlane.  These Oscars were for movies that people actually saw and cared about.

If the biggest complaint is that he was making sexist jokes, this sounds like the first Oscars in my lifetime that I might have actually found semi-amusing.

Sounds like someone is mad that we saw her boobs.

MacFarlane tweeted this morning he would never host again, for whatever that is worth

I think he did a fine job.  For me, it was nice to see a fresh face other than the "safe" 80's/90's comical stylings of Whoopy and Billy Crystal.

I didn't even watch the Oscars and I had a dream about MacFarlane last night. It was very odd.

The people that like Seth MacFarlane comedy and the people that watch the Oscars have very little overlap.  He brought in a new audience, but offended the base.

I think my favorite part was watching all of the distinguished actresses blush when he mentioned which movies they got naked in.

And if anybody thinks McFarlane was bad or that James Franco and Anne Hathaway sucked when they hosted, you must be too young to remember Letterman in 1995. I love David Letterman and have since he first came on the air, but his Oscar hosting gig was absolutely by far the worst ever. EVAR.

A lot Macfarlane hate comes from good ol' fashioned envy.

Suck on it, haters.

I'm about 99% sure that the "Seth McFarlane was a terrible oscar host" narrative was established somewhere around the time it was announced he was going to host and what we are seeing in the media is one of those increasingly frequent events where the fact that people can hop online and discuss the stories they are pushing is demonstrating how for so many years they got away with basically reporting whatever suited them.

I had a good example of this at work recently. We got a new group executive and she wanted to make some changes before she even sat down in the chair based off of whatever perposterous ideas she had in her head from talking to the other GE's. Anyway, she did this wonderful piece of kabuki theater where she had us run some workshops where the conclusion was basically foregone at the start "no one knows what their job responsibilities are and who does what across the other teams."

She actually got up infront of everyone and said this, also cited it as a reason why she was making some changes to the group structure.

Funny thing is - everyone who participated in the workshop and was asked about it later by various managers had the absolute opposite opinion: Basically they were really impressed by how well everyone knew each others jobs.

This is the kind of baloney the media companies have been pushing for years. The only real change is that now we have forums like the internet where a huge amount of people can get together and compare notes and go, "Hey! I'm not so sure about that!"

Remember how they also said Colbert bombed at the Whitehouse Correspondance Dinner :)

i didn't watch the oscars this year...i work a 12 hour shift on sundays. but i like seth and his brand of humor, plus he's a talented singer and performer. i also am a lifelong billy crystal fan and think he did a good job hosting all those years. whoopie gets on my damn nerves...BEFORE she even opens that huge mouth

I liked her in The Lion King.

The New Yorker has an interesting piece on MacFarlane as the consummate imitator; it's a bit more nuanced than the "he ripped off The Simpsons" diatribe that it could have been:

Wow, coming through in spades! Thank you for that.

And by the way, I thought MacFarlane was fantastic, and did a brilliant job of poking the Hollywood elite just enough to make them a bit uncomfortable. He's a genius at that sort of thing, obviously.

It's ok, Seth will do his next American Guy-Family Dad- whatever thing and his fans will eat it up.

Between this and the fact that I'm super jealous of the mountain of money he sleeps on, I hate that guy.

His success comes mostly from dull witted fans who mistake being obnoxious for being witty.  I can't wait for his inevitable fall.

Hollywood is obviously floundering open to try almost anything to attract the 20-something segment. They failed HARD with Franco-Hathaway. Seth comes across as funny in the same way that drunken frat-boys do. Sure, they can get you to laugh sometimes, but it really isn't comedy. Like watching Family Guy - usually 2-3 good laughs insulated by 20 minutes of alternating boring/offensive crap.

The last 'new host' that I liked was Robin Williams, but he is hardly a new face. They need to face up to the fact that the Academy Awards is an all ages show, not a FOX comedy. They need to hire mature comedians that can entertain a wide audience without having to resort to dick and fart jokes.

/I had to explain Seth to my 78 year old father
