Digitalstrange: The Razzies are now about the big name marquee films just like the Oscars rather than being the anti-Oscars as they were originally supposed to be.

1980 Winners....
CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC (AFD) Allan Carr, producer
Neil Diamond/THE JAZZ SINGER
Brooke Shields/THE BLUE LAGOON

John Adames/GLORIA(tie) Laurence Olivier/THE JAZZ SINGER Amy Irving/HONEYSUCKLE ROSE

I don't think they even started about as being about the truly "worst films"... I think they've been basically the "worst bombs" (ie, movies that did well but are polarizing, or were expected to do well but didn't) for awhile.

The Razzies are now just a bunch of bitter geeks whining about something popular.

Very internets.

I'm calling Grown Ups 2 for worst movie at the Razzies now

See?

Anyway, the Razzies were founded by a bunch of geeks with scripts on their desks they couldn't give away. They're not an antidote to anything. They're just like that old queen that used to release a worst dressed list every year.

Mugato: I was dragged to Twilight and that movie deserved its award. For a movie that's a sequel to a multi-billion dollar franchise it looks like a TV movie. And no one involves seems to give a shiat. So that's why a movie like this is worse than any Ed Wood or "Manos the Hands of Fate". Because they had the resources to make it not suck so much.

That is the point of the Razzies. If we went by the author of TFA's metric, the only movies that would get this award would be no-budget flicks with unknown actors from first time directors that few people saw and probably didn't get any distribution.

The Razzies are about Hype versus the actual product. Movies that have every advantage to be good (well known cast, experienced director and crew, decent budget), but just don't work.

That's why Michael Bay caught so much shiat for Transformers 2. Past movies like The Rock and Bad Boys show that he is capable of turning in a good movie, but TF2 was a $200 million turd.

Sure, it was technically worlds beyond something like Birdemic, but the people who made Birdemic knew their movie was bad. They didn't care. They were learning how to make a movie and having a blast doing it.

FTA: Adam Sandler I'll say from the off is pretty fair game. I've generally liked a lot of his films...

...aaaand that's where I stopped taking your seriously.

Bloody William: Hudson Hawk is a great movie and I'll flying jump kick anyone who says otherwise!

THIS. Hudson Hawk is like a live-action version of Lupin III

The Saturn Awards are a better antidote to the Oscars.

Tyrone Slothrop: Uzzah: I'm happy to predict that the nominees will include Adam Sandler again, probably Sylvester Stallone, and no doubt a good number of the usual suspects that the Razzies like to pick on. I'm calling Grown Ups 2 for worst movie at the Razzies now

Nope. I guarantee that "Movie 43" will take Worst Picture next year, regardless of what else is released this year. You could release a "Grindhouse"-style double-feature of "Jack and Jill 2: The Jillening" and "Deuce Bigalow: Central African Giggolo," and "Movie 43" would still win Worst Picture in a cakewalk.

It depends. Do the Razzies have the same short-term memory problem as the Oscars?

I don't think it's exactly a short-term memory problem as it is in terms of the hype vs. the actual product.  Here's the elements of that movie that really elevated it to new heights in terms of the Razzies:

* Lots of A-class actors/actresses
* High amounts of hype and marketing
* Horrible movie, which people could figure out even before it was released
* Totally bombed in theaters: only $5m on opening weekend, and only made $9m in the US.

Now, I know they tend to go after the high grossing hits, but it's a special kind of bomb when you have all of those hypish elements, and the public shouted "NO" when it was released.  (Even Catwoman got $40m, and it still bombed because of a high budget.)  It's certainly special enough to get Worst Picture, and I don't think there is going to be much anything to top this one.
