While the video in the link won't play for me, I can see stills along the video play line.  They just show that chowder head Melrose going on with his silver-winged jibber-jabber.  Another reason ESPN sucks.

Anyone with a link to the play in question?

We were all told that injuries would play a big role in this shortened season, and those pundits weren't lying. Look around the league at the casualty lists. Just brutal. They're dropping like flies out there. And it doesn't seem to matter if they were playing during the lockout or getting BJs from chubby girls in Lansing. That's what's stood out for me this season. Well, that and the bizarre officiating. It's like the refs weren't getting BJs from chubby girls in Lansing.

Wow. I mean c'mon man.

I watched the game in real time. The defenseman of the panthers was doing his job. He didn't push Malkin with the intent of hurting him. He was trying to get him off his angle off attack. They were edging each other for position and something funky happened with Malkins right leg/skate. Causing him to lose balance and whip around so that he went ass/back first into the boards. Notice how the panthers player didn't fall down or even lose his balance? He had total control over his body. If they had been tangled or trying to hurt Malkin he wouldn't have been able to stop that quickly.

Notice how the announcers didn't call it a dirty play? Because it wasn't. Maybe Malkin should not try to turn so abruptly at that speed.

It was an accident.

You obviously dont play ice hockey. I do. The smallest push at the wrong time can send someone completely out of control. He was pushed. Even the linked article says so.

Was it worth a penalty? I'll agree with you that within the moment, no, it does not appear penalty worthy. Does that still make it a dbag thing to do? Yes.

And I'd say the same thing if it was a penguin player.

One can hope that the initial positive reports are accurate. I'd hate to see any player out a whole season for this.

I have played hockey I don't anymore.

But what would you have the defenseman do? Let him go uninstructed? Should he have blindsided him with a cross check? Should he have kicked his skates? Slahed his wrist/stick?

The push was the least probable move to cause an injury and push Malkin off of his line of attack.

Look 99 times out of a hundred that push makes Malkin have to go around the back of the net this time he was pushed and then Malkins edge caused his leg to stutter step across the ice (may have caught a groove in the ice?) instead of gliding.

Still a clean play, still an accident, the Panthers player is still not a goon and did nothing wrong.

I'd like to point out how he didn't bother to retaliate when Neal got up in his face.

Unless you want to make hockey a non contact sport.

I know this wasn't a puck race to an iced puck, but I've seen a lot of guts getting tripped up going after an iced puck and going dangerously into the boards because of a trip or a push in the back. If they are concerned about player safety then it may be time to go to no touch icing like they do in college. It doesn't significantly hinder the game at that level.

A double "extended arm" hit towards the board is not a clean hit.  In fact, rules state that arms are not to extend during a hit.  Does anyone actually pay attention to that?  Not anymore but they should because this is the kind of crap that happens.

What could he have done?  All he had to do was stand there and brace to keep Malkin from moving towards the front of the goal.  Any defensemen can do that and they won't move an inch.

Dude, I've watched the clips more times then I can count, I don't see a "double extended arm" I see him leaning into Malkin and making initial contact with his own left shoulder and then using his right arm to finish his push. However, I do NOT see his arms extend. His right arm barely extends beyond a 90 degree bend. The ref is watching the play the whole way through, as the other poster said, he was a good 8 feet away from the boards, HIS LEG caused the fall by skipping out from under him and Malkin lost his edge.

I always thought refs used "extended arms" to mean your elbows are locked and your arms are straight. The Panthers player's arms never get that extended.

It's still a shame, as I like Malkin (much more than Crosby) and this sucks for the Pens, but theres no malice there.

This is an interesting statement. Crosby is targeted every time he is out on the ice. He is sometimes double/tripled team and the other teams single him out by banging, pushing, and hitting him. He is also 5'11, four inches smaller than Malkin. His condition was misdiagnosed as a concussion and it was a neck contusion. I don't get the half as tough B.S. that goes around other than just actual hate.

Anyway, I am tired of the Penguins inability to hold a damn lead. They can score with the best, but once they run into teams with good defenses, they get shut down (Devils for instance probably the Bruins). Until they come up with a good defense, they will continue to be bounced in the first/second round of the playoffs.
