"It was all bull- - - -," said Johnny DeMicco, an employee and son of Micco Motors owner Gary DeMicco. "A lot of it was staged, to be quite honest."

You mean reality tv isn't real?  I'm...devastated.  *yawn*

Reality TV has jaded us to the point where real reality isn't enough. They've got to create a fake reality to make reality real enough for us.

So as time goes on, reality becomes more extreme as a reflection of what is perceived as the norm as portrayed on reality TV. Then staged reality must become ever more extreme. It's a vicious cycle. One that ends with hardcore porn on the Lifetime Channel.

Lifetime would only have lesbian porn... can't have those evil men as positive role models...

So, is Subby referring to used car dealers or reality TV producers?

Okay, I throw the flag on the use of the Florida tag.  While the used car dealership is in FL, this is not really a "Oh, Florida" story.  The obvious tag would have been more appropriate.

John DiThomas, a producer at Rough Waters Films, a Boston documentary company that has been critical of reality TV, said networks care little about truth and more about ratings.

That's why it's called TELEVISION and not REAL LIFE.  Turn on the TV and (just like when you buy a movie ticket) you've agreed to "suspend disbelief".

In a great many school systems parents are screaming about teaching kids personal finance and other practical subjects.  Given that TV has such a commanding presence in our collective lives I don't understand why the christ we don't teach UNDERSTANDING MEDIA.  FYI, Television isn't a "Window on the World".  It's the "View from the Paycheck".

I know it's all about the money but sometimes I'd like to think that someone has our best interest in mind - and no it's not Pubic Broadcasting either - non commercial my ass.  What the hell is that before and after NO VA or Downtown Abbot?  Personal invitations?  They're COMMERCIALS !1!!!1!

gotta run, need to be grumpy elsewhere.

Same here.   Bar Rescue is at least interesting because bars & taverns can be interesting... people like to drink, people like to go to nice bars, it is kind of like Exterme Bar Makeover.  But, even if you love cars, nobody really loves used car lots.

1: PBS most popular shows have 1 ad before and 1 after now. Because they weren't cutting it on donations in this economy. They are very transparent about it.

2: the difference between 'reality' TV shows and other shows is that the reality ones perpetrate themselves as 'real', instead of heavily scripted and edited and written by a team of writers. So people think that they are some type of true to life thing, almost documentary style, instead of 90% plants or coaching by the producers and writers etc.

I used to watch Bar Rescue, but then I dumped cable.

It was really sad though. They took perfectly good neighborhood bars and turned them into hipster hell holes.

I guess any business has to make money though and if good neighborhood bar isn't cutting it you gotta change.

CSB

One of ,my favorite "good neighborhood bars" used to do the usual...call last call and all that, but at 2AM they locked the door...and kept serving the regulars. We weren't locked in. We could leave. They locked the door to the liquor control board and any other customers who weren't already there drinking.

I remember reading people who went apeshiat about the reality of Survivor. Until it came to light that they literally had people re-enact things so they could get better angles of what they were doing.

I for one, totally believe the repo shows. I like how they use their cat-like stealth skills when approaching a vehicle they are about to tow. They whisper and tippy-toe to the intended target all the time with spot lights with the power of 2 suns are cast on them. Pretty darn sneaky!

I'm not talking about the "reality" of it... I agree that "Bar Rescue" is probably fairly "set up" as well.   My point was the just the appeal of seeing a Bar/Tavern get redone vs. a Used Car Lot.

ok, i get ya. but you do know that all realty shows are totally fake, every last one of them. what you are watching is not real, it is all fabricated, all of it, every last second. Nobody is there to help anybody, who gives a shiat, it is all for making money for the studio or production company or whatever.

I am very aware.  Our friend was on "House Hunters", and she already knew which house she was going to buy, the other two were just there to make it 3 houses to look at.

Reality shows mostly run on personality, and Bar Rescue has decent camera faces. The douche in Hotel Impossible and Robert Irvine in Restaurant Impossible are very polarizing, but entertaining if you're in the mood, like Gordon Ramsey. The New Jersey blowhard on Restaurant Stakeout, though, just makes you want to punch him. It's a very fine line.
