rolladuck: I do truly miss the days when pages were hand-coded, content was static, ads meant you had hit it big (or had lots of gullible investors) and browsers just browsed.  And geocities was fun (albeit broken as shiat).
I get sad that the internet of old is but a memory, and in thirty years, few people will remember it, and its already completely out of reach.
At least with an old car, you can get that nostalgic feeling if you have one.  That is gone forever with the web.
And then occasionally you come across one of these pages.

Angelfire is still around.  I just looked, and the stupid little Angelfire site I made for myself back in high school is still there.  My shame is very great.

The W3C's markup validator (default settings) gives 424 errors and 1 warning.

I still handcode a lot of pages, but that's because we work on content outside of CMS-land.

The FrontPage version numbering is screwy, but it looks like this is a 10+ year-old version. A huge irritation in that one for me was tag redundancy. Instead of having

<[some tags]>lots of text it would be: <[some tags]>lots <[some tags]>of <[some tags]>text

(God freakin' dammit, the Fark editor and filter is screwing up my example, no matter how I do it.)

Whatever, my point is it would encapsulate every damn line or element in the same formatting codes separately, rather than having everything within a single set.

Also particularly infuriating to a hand-coder was that it would replace all my perfectly good, working HTML with its own interpretation -- which wouldn't work right! (AHEM, Fark.)

I love that the page was coded in a way that improved traffic 11 godzillionty percent, yet all the "experts" in here are going to show how to "fix" that code...so that it ends up being the most useless pos page on the entire internets.

I have to admin, taking the professional mick out of high end sites is one thing. Doing it to small mom-and-pops isn't cool.

This site has survived serious traffic spikes from fark, hacker news, and I assume reddit, something that many "pro" sites fail at.

Static HTML is why. Not dynamically-generated.

I started scrolling, didn't think much of it, scrolled more, started giggling, scrolled, laughed out loud, scrolled, belly-laughed ...

And some of the comments have put me over the edge.

Yeah as other people have pointed out, I.E. quirks mode actually makes the site work as the author probably intended it (maybe? although I shudder to think about that....)

That site has been like that for a long time. I saw someone tweeting about it long time ago. If they haven't noticed their own website looks like that, I doubt they'll notice traffic.
