But it's Britain's top Catholic cardinal, so this story is more interesting than it first appears. It may have some legs.

I think I've reached that point where I can no longer be outraged by idiots pulling these kinds of stunts. It's just depressing now.

So if you are accused of raping young boys you get moved to a new parish and your actions are hidden. Have sex with an adult of the same gender and your immediate resignation is requested.

No, no, the Pope is resigning for the first time since the 15th century for... health reasons! Yeah! That's it! Not the imminent release of information about child-farking scandals he was personally involved in! No relation! And those don't exist! So shut up!

Consensual sex between equals doesn't make their naughty parts tingle, so it is firmly forbidden.  Whereas abusive sex with young boys, especially that involving their delicate feet and perhaps some black shiny leather....erm, in recognition of the ecclesiastical boners pederasty has produced, it is judged much more leniently.

When you look at some of the shiat that popes have not resigned over in the last five centuries you have to figure that (A) he's terminally ill and will die within weeks, (B) the Catholic church has taken a huge leap into modernity and future popes will routinely step down in favor of somebody younger, or (C) there is a shiatstorm coming that will make the prophecies in Revelations look like a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park.

Oh, for crying out loud: this is Fark. You know its (C)

Speaking of revelation prophecies, the  bleats of "the beast received a deadly wound" from evangelicals is about to get pretty insufferable.

I've been insisting it was (C) since the retirement was announced. When this story broke, my sister emailed me and was finally willing to admit that I might be right.

a worldwide Homophobe Day would do so much good. on that special day take your homophobe friend, relative, neighbor, co-worker, clergy or politician out for half a dozen shots. discreetly redirect them to the nearest gay bar, let nature take its course and the next day send them a video so they can face the truth.

There have been rumblings that this story might not be isolated and that it might be big. It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out.

I still think the pope's resignation is very, very strange.

I went to catholic grade school in the mid 90's. Our priests would teach us how to box and make bets on who'd win, and had as little to do with running the school as possible. The nuns were the ones you had to watch out for.

Lutheran/Episcopalian here... I think there are some sincere priests, monks, nuns, etc. that truly believe that the Roman church is The Only Real Church and that they are to continue in their calling regardless of the ugliness of church scandals and shiatty politics. I don't agree with them, but I don't think they're all suspect merely by being associated with Catholicism. I think people who sign up for years and years of school for what is (generally) a life of being a poor, sexless loner must feel some actual commitment to the cause, at least when they first come on board.

Yeah, I agree. I have a friend/former coworker who became a monk a few years back and I'm pretty sure he sincerely believes in his calling given how hard he worked to even get there since he has all kinds of memory issues from epilepsy medication that make studying ridiculously hard for him.

It is scientifically documented that opposition to homosexuality correlates with homosexual attraction. It is further documented that intensity of opposition correlates positively with intensity of homosexual attraction.

Science!

Is anyone keeping track of how many cardinals that can vote in the coming conclave are involved in serious scandals?

There's this guy who likes messing around with seminarians.

There's Cardinal Mahoney of Los Angeles and presumably a few others who are tainted by covering up child abuse.

There's at least a couple who are tainted by corruption at the Vatican bank.

And apparently there's at least a few who are bumming each other (not a problem) but are being blackmailed over it (bit of a problem).

The new Pope has to be elected with 2/3 of the votes, to make sure that he is acceptable to 2/3 of cardinals. Which is great except it means that any candidate who promises to clean up the Vatican is probably going to have at least 10-20 votes against him based on the cardinals self-interest rather than than the interests of the Catholic church.

Seeing as there's 102 (I think) cardinals voting that's a massive impediment to getting someone in who can sort the scandals out.

Kind of like "killing" fetuses is frowned upon by American "Christians", but the death penalty is grounds for celebration.

The lesson to be learned here is that large Christian institutions consider children to be sexy and/or delicious, and anyone of adult age is expendable.

No surprise to me.

A cousin of mine was a nun in St. Louis.

She left the church in part because of all the sex the clergy and nunnery were having.

O'Brien, who is due to retire next month, has been an outspoken opponent of gay rights, condemning homosexuality as immoral, opposing gay adoption, and most recently arguing that same-sex marriages would be "harmful to the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of those involved". Last year he was named "bigot of the year" by the gay rights charity Stonewall.

Accused by 4 priests with allegations going back to the early 80s of "inappropriate" and "intimate" conduct?

This is Jack's complete lack of surprise.

On the plus side he's being forced to retire in shame and infamy and his time as being viewed as any kind of a moral authority is at long last at an end.

Wrong side of history and morality.

Sucks to be him.

TL,DR?
