2013-02-25 07:14:54 PM
Here we go!

The Surgeon General, Doctor Koop
S'posed to give you all the poop
But when he's with P.M.R.C.
The poop he's scoopin'
Amazes me

C-Span showed him, all dressed up
In his phoney Doctor God get-up
He looked in the camera and fixed his specs
'N gave a fascinating lecture
'Bout anal sex
ANAL SEX
ANAL SEX
ANAL SEX
ANAL SEX

He says it is not good for us
We just can't be promiscuous
He's just a doctor - he should know
It's the work of the Devil, so
Girls, don't blow!
DON'T BLOW
DON'T BLOW

Don't blow Jimmy, don't blow Bobby
Get yourself another hobby
(If Jesus practiced medicine
I'm sure he'd do it
Just like him)

Is Doctor Koop a man to trust?
It seems at least that Reagan must
(And Ron's a trusting sort of guy -
He trusts Ed Meese
I wonder why?)
I WONDER WHY
WONDER WHY

The A.M.A. has just got caught
For doin' stuff they shouldn't ought
All they do is lie and lie
Where's Doctor Koop?
He's standin' by

Surgeon General? What's the deal?
Is your epidemic real?
Are we leaving something out?
Something we can't talk about?
A little green monkey over there
Kills a million people?
That's not fair!
Did it really go that way?
Did you ask the C.I.A.?
Would they take you serious,
Or have THEY been
Promiscuous
Have THEY been Promiscuous
Have THEY been Promiscuous
Have THEY been Promiscuous

-FZ

Just to put some perspective on how good a guy Koop was despite being a hardcore rightwinger in his personal politics, here's the rest of Reagan's first-term appointees.

Al Haig, Secretary of State. One of Nixon's hatchet men; lasted only a year.
Don Regan, Treasury Secretary. Father of Reaganomics, source of most of our current national debt.
Cap Weinberger, Defense Secretary. Would have been imprisoned in the Iran-Contra affair if not pre-emptively pardoned by GHW Bush.
James Watt, worst Interior Secretary ever. A complete loon who thought environmental protection was unnecessary since Jesus was going to call us all home soon.
William French Smith, Attorney General. A non-entity later replaced by Reagan's idiotic crook of a crony, Ed Meese.

The list goes on.

To be fair, he was in his 90s, and they probably had the obits ready.

But my ride home from work was also like 2 hours ago.

I was too young to really know who he was (I knew who he was afterward, but I didn't experience his tenure first hand really).  But I grew up in the 90s/00s where AIDS was certainly out in the public sphere and with a Surgeon General of less character looking toward his future prospects there'd probably be a lot more dead.

And it's sad, really, that it's so damn impressive when someone puts aside their politics and just does what's right for their job without any BS or posturing or maneuvering.  On either side, mind you.

Though Koop was philosophically opposed to abortion on personal and religious grounds, he declined to state that abortion procedures performed by qualified medical professionals posed a substantial health risk to the women whose pregnancies were being terminated, despite political pressure to endorse such a position.

Because... it wasn't true.

Effing a.  That's the type of person I respect *immensely*.  We might disagree on a moral level, but facts are facts and we can agree to disagree about the rest.

Bohnanza: Was operated on by this dude when I was 2.

Wiki:

Baby Doe and the Rights of Handicapped Children:
In April 1982, a child born in Bloomington, Indiana was diagnosed with Down syndrome as well as esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula. Six days later, after court involvement and parental discussion involving disagreement among physicians about whether or not to treat the baby or let him die, the baby died, having been denied surgical treatment to correct his esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula. Baby Doe, as he would be known, became a symbol for children with birth defects, handicapped infants, and the debate over infanticide. Koop was not initially involved with the Baby Doe case but had a special interest in it. As a pediatric surgeon in Philadelphia, he and his colleagues had operated on 475 such babies during his 35 years there, with ever-increasing survival rates. During his last eight years in active practice, Koop never lost a full-term baby upon whom he had operated to correct esophageal atresia. It was due to this background that he became actively involved championing policies to protect the rights of newborns with defects, which led to Congress passing the Baby Doe Amendment.

Honestly, I needed some inspiration today. Sucks that he died, but damn if he didn't fight some good fights.

That sucks to hear that bad sex education still persists to this day. I had the bare minimum sex ed  in the 80's when Koop was the surgeon general, although I don't blame him. It's more local community standards and I just happened to be living in the most conservative part of Wisconsin.

To be fair, we did have the teacher show how pregnancy occurs by having one of those bare minimal fallopian tube diagrams - but how that made any sense when they didn't show how it had any relation to the outside body.  It was all pretty worthless.  And there was of course, no mention of contraceptives.  I don't think I learned a thing, except the vaguest notions of the interior organs of a female.

With my parents not at willing to give me the birds and bees talk, its a wonder I didn't knock up some chick.  I learned everything from VHS porn.  Oh yeah. I was too much of a nerd to talk any girl in HS into giving it up.  Just as well.

And yeah, I'm aware he left that position 24 years ago.

don't understand: Here we go!

The Surgeon General, Doctor Koop
S'posed to give you all the poop
But when he's with P.M.R.C.
The poop he's scoopin'
Amazes me

C-Span showed him, all dressed up
In his phoney Doctor God get-up
He looked in the camera and fixed his specs
'N gave a fascinating lecture
'Bout anal sex
ANAL SEX
ANAL SEX
ANAL SEX
ANAL SEX

He says it is not good for us
We just can't be promiscuous
He's just a doctor - he should know
It's the work of the Devil, so
Girls, don't blow!
DON'T BLOW
DON'T BLOW

Don't blow Jimmy, don't blow Bobby
Get yourself another hobby
(If Jesus practiced medicine
I'm sure he'd do it
Just like him)

Is Doctor Koop a man to trust?
It seems at least that Reagan must
(And Ron's a trusting sort of guy -
He trusts Ed Meese
I wonder why?)
I WONDER WHY
WONDER WHY

The A.M.A. has just got caught
For doin' stuff they shouldn't ought
All they do is lie and lie
Where's Doctor Koop?
He's standin' by

Surgeon General? What's the deal?
Is your epidemic real?
Are we leaving something out?
Something we can't talk about?
A little green monkey over there
Kills a million people?
That's not fair!
Did it really go that way?
Did you ask the C.I.A.?
Would they take you serious,
Or have THEY been
Promiscuous
Have THEY been Promiscuous
Have THEY been Promiscuous
Have THEY been Promiscuous

Rest in Peace, Sir. You did well.

I think there was an incident where Clinton's SG said teens should be given condoms, or something. Ever since then the SG has been a nonentity.

That would be Joycelyn Elders, who dared point out that the drug war was bad for health. When she suggested teens could reduce their STD risk by jerking off, that was a firing.

The irony, of course, is that Clinton himself should have listened to her.

FTFA: Koop maintained his personal opposition to abortion, however. After he left office, he told medical students it violated their Hippocratic oath.

Like many people, he cherry-picked dogma.

The oath also states that you should teach the healing arts without fee or covenant -- did he speak out about medical schools charging tuition? How about the arts should only be passed to males? Did he speak out about women in med school?

He also would pray at the bedside of pediatric patients. What sort of prayers are there for a god who created the universe but is torturing helpless kids with diseases and letting many die horrible deaths and put their families through mental torture?

I have a lot of admiration for him but the sky wizard logic in his brainwaves did a lot of damage.

2013-02-25 08:52:45 PM
I see we've mentioned Dr. Coop's willingness to fight AIDS with methods the rest of Reagan's administration couldn't stand (heck, it wasn't like they were against a disease that killed gays, whores, and junkies).  He also wasn't willing to lie about the effects of abortion on formerly pregnant women, as much as Reagan insisted on it.

Hero tag is long overdue.

/also, Watt wasn't the worst.  Anne Gorsuch's (director of EPA) war on the EPA did more damage than the oh so diverse* Watt.

Rest in Peace, Sir. You did well.

Basically, the SG gets absolutely no money, no support, and very little power to do her job. Most of the power/money was taken by the Assistant Secretary of Health, who basically runs the SG these days.
Anything the SG says these days is eviscerated by politics, both external and internal (HHS). I'm pretty sure its the worst job in the world.

Hence why she is reduced to giving random speeches, and issuing 'well duh' health recommendations. At a bare minimum, the SG should be given her own budget and control of her own office.

StreetlightInTheGhetto: The Flexecutioner: StreetlightInTheGhetto: Damn Fark, you're slacking.  This was on NPR on my ride home.

yeah.  slippin indeed.  saw it on PBS newshour about 3 minutes before it was on here.

IIRC, C. Everett Koop also instituted non-discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation in the PHS - the first uniformed service to do so.  Which also pissed off the Republicans.

I didn't think 'flown the coop' meant that.  I was pretty sure it was a different phrase you wanted there altogether now.  It was like there was Koop.  And then your brain said "Yes, coop, that's what you said".  And you said, "Wait a minute, you two guys are talking about two different coups."  And then everyone forgot to plug the joke back in and it ran out of power but was already on the stage and the curtain went up.

Small CSB time: Dr. Koop operated on my older sister, who was born with a number of life-threatening birth defects including an incomplete gastrointestinal system, when he was a pediatric surgeon at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 1965. The surgery he attempted was a brave failure. My older sister died soon after surgery. At a time when many surgeons would have been curt and dismissive, or would have left the awkward excuses to a subordinate, Dr. Koop took the time to sit with my mother, explain what happened and grieve with her.

Rarely is there a person who can be so skilled yet humble about their failings, or who can hold intense private convictions yet refuse to judge others by them. It's really too bad Fark couldn't slip the hero tag in somewhere alongside the news flash.

C. Everett Coop delivered my next younger brother in Philly in late 1960.  He had an undescended left testicle.  My brother, that is.  When C.E. was done with him, it seared my earliest memory into my mind.  My baby brother had a rubber band running from his left testicle to his inside lower thigh.  And I had a wind up metal duckie that the good doctor had given me.  Neither my brothers or I have been the same ever since.
