I'm pretty humourless on a Monday so I can't offer an opinion.
Even my own loud flatulence isn't making me smile today.

quatchi: Lando Lincoln: yanceylebeef: I thought it was funny.

I did too. I guess we're just two crass jerks. Or some other people don't understand that the Onion was not actually calling her a coont but was instead making fun of Seth McFarlane.

[quizzicaldog]

Seth said... "To give you an idea how young she is it'll be 16 years before she's too old for Clooney."

That's a joke.

What the Onion said was not a joke and then went well over the line and just kept going.

You're just making excuses and trying to look edgy hipsters.

"Crass jerks" comes a lot closer to the truth.

You're just being an offended hipster.

Didn't MacFarlane tease the same joke about Anne Hathaway in the closing?

Implying a sexual relationship between a 9 year old and a 50 year old is a joke, but calling her an offensive name is over the top.  Got it.

I realize this. Humour is a very subjective thing. That noted, calling a 9 year old a coont goes beyond the pale.

And anyone arguing that it was a joke a Seth's expense is basically an idiot.

Even Seth's joke about her was at Clooney's expense not hers.

Although whether it was a burn or a compliment to Clooney's ability to get younger women into his bed is debatable.

2013-02-25 02:30:46 PM
they felt its not the humor they try to represent.  why's it a big deal if they appologize?  And about the line, directly making fun of a 9 year old is bad (I don't even think honey boo boo jokes are that funny), but making fun of clooney using a 9 year old indirectly is funny.

2013-02-25 02:30:58 PM

catmandu: Vodka Zombie: the801: skimmed like 4 articles about this and saw nothing even hinting of an explanation as to what caused someone to think she's a coont. i have to imagine that she said or did something or was in some way coontish for anyone to have mentioned it.

/have no idea who she is; didn't pay attention to the oscars at all.

I can kind of understand the joke they were trying to make.  It's right up there with "Mr. Roger's dreams of burying hookers in the desert."

But, they fell flat on their faces this time.  And, that's what happens when you just try too hard.

The spirit of the joke was funny and typical Onion. The choice of that particular word for a nine year old was wrong.

this, it's funny if there is an interview with an actress that is actually being catty or even a coont which is then followed up by the 9 year old.  i.e. she's the youngest ever nominee so she's going to have an attitude about it.

But as a non contextual tweet it's just kind of dumb.

One is making fun of a grown man, the other is making fun of a 9-year old.

Boy, I'll bet that 9 year-old was mad when she read the Onion last night.

2013-02-25 02:32:34 PM

FishyFred: I love that some people are saying things like "There's an apology, but it's too little, too late."

The tweet went up late Sunday night, came down an hour later, and the apology -- a real one, not "sorry you were offended" -- was online before lunch on Monday.

That's lightning fast.

"Yeah, but I only read about it today and by then I was mortified. Later in the article I read that an apology had been issued but I'd already read about this horrible derogatory comment so the damage had been done."

I believe that is the way of thinking those people have. It's totally illogical but they were late to the party so they have to verse their opinion while it still feels as though it matters.

Quvenzhané  is my neighbor (true story).  I asked her this morning what she thought about the whole Onion thing and she said "It's f*cking hilarious!  People need to lighten the f*ck up, it was a joke.  Besides, they inferred that I can act like a c*nt, they didn't talk about my c*nt."

The bigger question is how Beasts of the Southern Wild got nominated.  I watched it last night, and it wasn't all that great.  it was alright, but it's been done before, and better.  It reminded me of a mix of Big Fish and In America.

\would have given it best score, though

I felt the same about Silver Linings Playbook.  While I thoroughly enjoyed it, I don't see why any of it was Oscar-worthy.  It was just a solid movie with solid actors.

The joke relies, at least in part, on the shock of someone who is currently 9 sleeping with someone who is currently 50.  Regardless of when that relationship occurs.  Otherwise you make the joke about Jennifer Lawrence instead.

Yep, and a lot of reviews say things like "although the first twenty minutes are not great ..."  well, how in the hell did a movie with a full quarter of its running time not being good end up being a "great" film???  It's as if we're rating sci-fi now.

So the most obvious point of the Onion's joke was that the humor lay in just how horrible calling a 9 year old the c-word is, also alluding to the absurdity of a 9-year old being made publicly available for such a level of scrutiny in the first place.

I get that people are upset, but I'm only seeing a lot of "You can't call a 9 year old girl a c-word it's crossing a line"  What line, and why exactly is  that too far?

Is this just one of those times when all the people who don't know what The Onion is and have no sense of humor get incidentally alerted to its existence?

2013-02-25 03:00:06 PM
It depends on her poltical affiliations if it is funny or not.

2013-02-25 03:01:08 PM
Sheez, it may be more plain than the Onion usually is, but I read it as being similar to this, not as an actual insult.

Agreed. Bear rape can be funny given the proper context.

Case in point... there's a fake Ted Nugent newspaper article I like to post in Ted threads in which Ted accidentally douses himself with female bear urine and ends up getting mauled to death by a bear but not before being horribly raped by said bear and giving it a beej.

I'd link to it but photobucket is down.

Context is key in humor and the 140 character parameter of Twitter provides little room for it.

How is it that we recognize the Onion as satire, where exactly  nothingthey write is supposed to be taken literally, and at the same time still insist they were really calling this girl a coont?

That's a pretty weird blind spot.

She would be at the Governor's Ball all night, and she would be there when Anne Hathaway waked up in the morning.

2013-02-25 03:08:14 PM
I understand the joke in the context of most of The Onion's humor.

They're predicting the future. They're saying, this is the way things are headed. They act out what it would be like if things were just a bit more terrible than they already will be.

The joke is, this Tweet is just a slight exaggeration of awful, sincere Tweets, and the intended reaction was that people would recognize the truth of that observation.

No one is insisting they were really calling her a coont.  People are insisting that it is inappropriate to publicly call her that, probably because it could get back to her.

This isn't a rude joke made at a poker game.  The kid is probably also on Twitter, so she could very well find out about the comment.  Then her parents would have to explain to a 9 year old some tough realities about life as a celebrity.

I get what they were going for:  "It's funny because it's not true", with a generous dose of "Shocking!" for flavour.  But you can't hit a kid with that.  Glad they apologized.
