Jokes about political correctness?  Time to party like it's 1989!

2013-02-25 02:07:52 PM

EdNortonsTwin: Ah, just call them whatever they want.  In twenty years the new term will be all used up and become insulting again.

OK, I'll call them "Hodor."

2013-02-25 02:10:40 PM
Problem is, as many have pointed out, that whatever term you use will soon become the new insult.

Problem is, bullshiat.

Hoo boy, you got me there!
Who takes care of you, again?

I refuted your baseless assertion with a baseless assertion. You're right - I did get you there. You're just not bright enough to get it

Will the Fark filter have to have "retard" added to it? "Successful and attractive intellectually disabled person"? "Unnerving-Americans"? "Special people of specialness"?

Baseless assertion? That whatever the correct currently correct term becomes an insult? Do some very simple research on the terms used over the last 100 years, and you will see how utterly wrong you are. Oh, wait. No, you won't.  Never mind.
Hold fast!

I like 'em French-fry potaters.

//mmm-hmm

skullkrusher: yeah, their lives are tough and so are the lives of those who have to care for them. So if those people ask you not to use the word because it is hurtful, you're a gigantic asshole for continuing to use it.

What's the rule, exactly? Is it that I can't use any word for the condition as an insult? Or is there something special about the word "retard"?

you're right, I won't. You made the assertion. Back it up or shut up. In your research, note the tone of the words used. Or continue believing that general trends of the past are bound to continue while assuming all remains the same. This is why we still have slavery and homosexuality is less accepted today than it was 50 years ago.

It's an ugly word. It's a childish word. Many who are or have someone with such a disability in their lives find it hurtful. So don't use it in mixed company. The rules aren't so hard.

As an insult, asking someone if they're "mentally disabled" or whatever doesn't have the same tone as calling a person a "retard". People who are or care for those who do have mental disabilities are aware that it is a less than idea situation. I do think certain terms are more hurtful than others though.

like calling a straight person a "f*ggot", right? I mean, you're not actually calling a gay person a "f*ggot" so it's cool. You're just using it as a stand in for something else totally unrelated to sexuality Who can be hurt by that then?

Grow up, boy.

There is something special about morons defending their use of the word "retard". Real special. Seriously, are they letting you use the computers during recess because it's raining outside or something?

I prefer "intellectually disabled".  If you're going to be disabled by somebody, it might as well be an intellectual.

Yogimus: We should go back to the old terminoligy of Idiot, Moron, and Imbecile.

STOP CHANGING WORDS.  The new word will have the same meaning. And be equally offensive a decade later.

This.  It's like Negro-Black-African American.  Shell shock, "postconcussional syndrome", battle fatigue, traumatic war neurosis, ptsd

I expect the medical terms to change occasionally as knowledge of the specifics of the conditions become better known, but let's keep as many of the other words around as possible.  You're always going to have insults.

canavar: I have lived in Turkey for 8 years and I never once heard the word 'salatalik'('cucumber' in Turkish) used to refer to a mans penis before.

You could be early in the cycle; it probably takes more like 20 years for the shift.

I remember a polynesian tribe that considered their god's name too sacred to be spoken; to do so was sacrilegious.  So they'd come up with a nickname for it.  As the elders who knew the old name died off, the nickname became associated as the 'real' name, nobody remembering the old one, so the nickname was no longer spoken and a new nick chosen.  It went on long enough that the researchers figure some names were repeated.

Roont is a good word.

2013-02-25 03:04:40 PM
No matter what the name is, there will always be activists whose main purpose is to whine over nomenclature instead of being useful.  No matter what term is given to certain people, the term will be used as an insult by some people or used to create a slang insult (ex: aspie).

Why the fark should the professional community have to change names just because of that?

/I suspect because it has the potential to be an easy victory, you get the state board to change the name on its official terms list and you can declare victory, pat yourself on the back, and feel good
//which is so much easier than providing a decade of care to an actual retard

El Brujo: Another one, provided by Stephen King is "roont". As in having a ruined brain.

Oh dammit, now you've got me. Before he worked that into the Dark Tower series he had an old man (uncle? grandpa?) character in another book saying "Ya roont 'em {character name}!" possibly as part of a memory. Clearly it's being used in a rather different sense than what you're referencing. It's going to bug me until I figure out what book that was but I'm thinking Christine. This is about as distracting as hearing or mishearing someone say anything that sounds like nadsat.

Can we exchange "retarded" with "not retarded"?

That way we can still say the word while stating that the retard in question isn't a retard.  The retards won't know any better.

2013-02-25 03:25:44 PM
Education was much more effective when retarded kids were placed in their special retard rooms and not allowed to bother normal kids. Sorry, but the truth.

60k a year for an autistic kid in VT, per year. 12-14k per normal student as well. That is what it costs taxpayers.

At least 25% of autistics meet the criteria for mental retardation.  That's if you're using the "happy" statistics.

That definition for "retarded" is so far advanced and hard to understand perhaps now many more of us qualify.

2013-02-25 04:13:04 PM
The same thing happened in the UK. Spastic became a derogatory word, so "The Spastics Society" renamed to "Scope".

Now scope is being used in a derogatory way.

I think what is wrong with people today is political correctness. I see kids all over the place acting retarded who are not retarded. We can't say "quit acting retarded" because it might offend someone who is retarded. So that more people are acting retarded. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHhh

Cup_O_Jo: I think what is wrong with people today is political correctness.

You do realize that "political correctness" started out as a fairly neutral or even positive term that has had its semantic scope over generalized and now is often used as a broad negative term that has lost much of its meaning?

What's next? Will "politeness" or "consideration" become pejoratives? After all, Republicans have mounted an effort to make "empathy" and "science" dirty words and have destroyed the meaning of "patriotism" and are working on "freedom"..

2013-02-25 04:38:43 PM

skullkrusher: TypoFlyspray: Get this, Morons, it's not the word that's offensive, it's the condition and the having to live with the condition. I have a pair of Retarded cousins (twins, didn't get enough oxygen in the womb), and their life sucks out loud in 16.7 million colors whatever word you use for their condition. Changing the language will do precisely dick for them. This sort of busybodied PC idiocy is the functional equivalent of Facebook Slacktivism: Utterly worthless.

yeah, their lives are tough and so are the lives of those who have to care for them. So if those people ask you not to use the word because it is hurtful, you're a gigantic asshole for continuing to use it.

No longer calling black people "colored" isn't going to do a farking thing for them but in this day and age, many people would take offense to it so people don't use it. It's not "PC". It's just being a decent human.

The big difference is that "colored" was a euphemism.  Back when "colored' was the polite term, "black" would get a fight on your hands.  The "coloreds" then looked at the situation where the "whites" were happily being called "whites" and they would rage over being called "black", and promptly started the "black pride" movement.  "Colored" is offensive today not because it isn't "PC" (you should use African-World-Citizen), but it implies that being such a race requires an euphemism.*

"Retarded" is just a worn out euphemism which no longer hides the medical definition it was supposed to.  It makes even less sense since "retarded" means exactly "developmentally disabled", why not choose the simpler one already in use.

* my father has been known to use the term "colored" in the twentyfirst century.  It is better than what his mother used (although not around my little ears).
