Advice for our congresspersons who now have to experience modern cattle-car flying: Always request an emergency exit row, if it's available. With the extra leg room, that's like a poor man's first class.

So much for all those fact-finding trips.

No, those are paid for by lobbyists and influence peddlers.

I think United charges extra for those rows now.

1)  The sequester will happen
2)  No congresscritter will ever fly commercial
3)  No congresscritter will lose their preferred parking space at the airport

Yep.  They'll weasel out ways to retain their pay, perks, etc. etc. and the rest of us will have to live with the consequences.  Book it.

Hi Bob,  This is Congrescritter Farkthe Poor.
I know you helped out with my campaign and I appreciate that but I'm in a bit of a spot. It appears that I need to get to Columbia to help negotiate a trade deal and due to the sequester, I'll have to fly commercial.  I was wondering if there was any chance one of your jets was heading in that direction and if I could hitch a ride?
Why yes Bob, you could come along and I'll even see if I can't get you along to some of the private parties that I've been invited to by that countries major exporters.

Well, first, they generally do fly commercial, at least to and from their districts. Yes, they pay for it, but they're given some perks in regards to booking. Second, the airports and airlines are the ones giving them perks like free premium parking spots, the government doesn't pay for those in any way.

I'd be in favor of a toll upon driving into the city, with 25% refunded when your car drives out.

Extra bonus points if the price to drive your car into the city was higher than the rush-hour metro fare.

Maybe, but people often wildly overestimate the perks and lifestyle of a Member of Congress. Most of the stuff they get makes a lot of sense to people once its explained in context, and they don't get all that much to begin with. If I hear somebody ranting about Congressional perks, my immediate thought is that they're barking up an entirely wrong tree.

"Members of Congress adore flying on Air Force jets, particularly for overseas trips - there are no security lines, check-in is a breeze, the service couldn't be better, and it's business class-only."

Start selling tickets to the public to offset sequester losses.

Depends on the individual critter in many cases I think.  I've known some very normal, modest, down to earth ones.  I've also known some who embody "entitled".

I recently bumped into Rep.   Michael Grimm at an Orlando Denny's.  He was vacationing with his kids.  Nice guy.  Impressed I knew who he was since I live here.  Normal, easy to speak to, and traveling like every other tourist we get here.

You're kidding right? Being elected to Congress is essentially winning the lottery if lotteries were conducted on popularity.

Their perks are paltry? I WISH someone would buy my dinner everyday, buy everything I sell at twice market value, and grease the skids for family members into lucrative high priced jobs just "because".

2013-02-25 11:18:02 AM
Wait a second.  There are like a billion rules and regulations on the military side about "ethics" and one of the things is air travel.  MilAir is like the last resort because it is expensive, and it is generally expected (at least on the Marine Corps side) that we will fly commercial when it comes to going to conferences and stuff, and general officers are expected to take commercial as well unless there is a prior scheduled MilAir flight going to where the general is going (cough, cough....somehow they magically appear many times).

And the Air Force has a nice fleet of fancy jets JUST for Congress people to travel to and from their districts/states?  WTF is that?  I can understand some use of MilAir, but all the time?  I mean, I'm sure a General Officer is a huge prize for anti-American forces to take out, and we force those dudes to fly commercial wherever possible, and the run-of-the-mill Congressperson really isn't.

Whatever.......

Obama has to veto any can kicking.  He's left himself no other option.  If he caves on this, he might as well just retire with Joe and let Boehner run the US for the rest of the term.  For what it's worth, I think it's right to do so.  You can't let the GOP run the country from the house simply by taking the country hostage every few months.  They've already gotten too familiar with that tactic.

0bama is the one taking the country hostage every three months.  The can gets kicked down the road then he gets all upset when people say "we shouldn't kick it down the road any more".   He got what he wanted on the debt ceiling - kicking that past the 2012 elections and now he has to deal with it...again.  He got the sequester that he wanted because rather than leading, he thought this threat is how to govern.  He was wrong.

I guess you're right when we look at how difficult it has been for congress to raise the debt ceiling for spending they authorized during past presidencies.

Yup. High up leadership, in fact, I think it may be Speaker only outside of special circumstances. For some reason, these things about how congresspeople get such awesome perks are always distorted to exaggerate things, take them as far out of context as possible, and gin up outrage.

Well, I didn't mean to imply that I sat next to him and had a proper chat.  At any rate it was early in the morning and he seemed tired.  I walked with him as we were boarding and I complimented his appearance on Maddow the previous night.  We were interrupted by numerous constituents prodding him on various issues.  I told him I could almost sympathize with being constantly bombarded like that, as I remember when my dad was on the school committee and got regular public grillings on his fight to get a new middle school built.  Barney's eyes lit up, his political spidey-sense detecting an opportunity to win political capital, and interrupted, "You need a school built?  Which town?"  I sheepishly told him "Oh this was in Rhode Island and 15 years ago."  His face dropped and we were done talking.
