Seth Mcfarlane could beat every girlfriend he has from now until 2017 and in 2018, he would still get a date.

I watched the whole program for the first time in a long time and thought he did a great job.  Sure, his jokes were a bit edgy sometimes, but that's the point.  What do you think you're going to get with Seth MacFarlane?

2013-02-25 09:35:34 AM
He just had to have a Nazi joke.

2013-02-25 09:36:39 AM
he was better than I thought he would be, but mostly due to low expectations.

At least they took a chance and didn't trot out Billy Crystal again for more tired Catskills-forged humor that cracks your grandmom up.

"Bring back Billy Crystal!" said nobody under 70 years of age.

Seth, you're not Sinatra. Can we just give the job to NPH already?

2013-02-25 09:38:39 AM
After learning a bit about him from past interviews, he struck me as a guy to honestly loved the chance to host.  He was really trying to do a good, respectful job, and have some fun with it at the same time, but seemed uncomfortable delivering some of the jokes that were written - so they kind of fell flat.

From what I saw, I don't think he did that bad of a job.

2013-02-25 09:40:19 AM
It's not he'll be blacklisted or anything. He's a heavy-hitter. A money-maker. He's Hollywood elite. So what if the tallent get's their feathers ruffled? Bad press is better than no press at all. McFarlane knows that.

That's because Ricky Gervais is funny.

I didn't watch it since I was watching The Walking Dead.  Plus why would I want to see the Hollywood elite pat each other on the back and give each other awards?  That's like watching Congress pass a bill that would give itself a pay raise.

The problem is that his "edgy" jokes weren't all that edgy and certainly not edgy enough to make up for the mediocre humor.

Yeah, it wasn't good. There was a serious lack of confidence about the whole thing, and many of his jokes were just being a dick for the sake of being a dick. You don't make a joke about George Clooney banging a 9 year old when she's sitting right there. You make that joke at a George Clooney roast, not when the girl is sitting in the audience.

that song was hilarious and benign. all the cutaways were staged and with the full cooperation of those mentioned. it was about as edgy as a jay leno monologue.

Didn't stop the 15 year olds on Tumblr to reblog clips of Shatner and the "unamused" audience unironically.  Of course, they also don't understand any humor that's not a punchline and then 5,000 reblogs of just [SCREAMING] and gibberish

Same here. I usually skip them, but watched last night solely because of the chance that Seth might top Gervais for edge. I like Gervais better because, having made a bag of cash in his 40s, he clearly doesn't give a fark about ever working again and has a healthy disrespect for "the industry". I'm sure it's very freeing to be him in public and merely say what most people are thinking.

MacFarlane did not disappoint, but compared to the waxworks of Franco/Hathaway or, years back, the appallling Letterman, he did quite well.

Like the better sort of Fark comment, MacFarlane was smart and funny. While I maintain he's a Farrelly brother trapped in the body of a 1949 lounge singer, he was fast, sharp and professional in that he executed his role well and told off-colour jokes as expected. If you were shocked by his references to boobs and Rihanna getting off on being punched, you may be a typical Academy voter, and/or dead.

Didn't see the Oscar (I didn't even knew that it when it was until today), but I laughed at the Chris Brown-Rihana joke...

Equal opportunity for the "black sock" joke. I giggled, especially as Christopher Plummer was there and is legendary for hating the fact he turned down points for The Sound of Music.

Seth McFarlane is a very talented man with the tact and decorum of a Tourettes sufferer (with apologies to those afflicted with this disorder).
He really needs to hire someone to zap him with a remote-controlled collar whenever he strays into douche-bag territory - like Cliff Clavin did on that episode of Cheers.

2013-02-25 09:58:57 AM
Disclaimer:  Seth's animated shows are turds.  Not funny and incredibly derivative.

That said, I thought he was pretty damn funny a number of times last night.

2013-02-25 09:59:11 AM
I thought overall he did a fine job. And the we saw your boobs song was pretty damn funny, really.

And to reemphasize a point made up thread, Ricky Gervais was 10 times more offensive than Macfarlane. For those who hated Macfarlane, it's been made very clear this was a one-shot deal, so you'll never have to worry about it again.

Last time I checked those jokes were quite popular if not obligatory on this website, including the wilkes booth joke.  Unless I see more people crashing those threads saying "not funny" or showing offense, i wouldn't expect there to be many in this thread.

And about as funny as a Leno monologue. "Hilarious" is not the word I'd use to describe it. It wasn't as bad as some of his other jokes but it was the kind of funny that's only funny if you think just saying the word "boobs" is hilarious.

What makes anyone think he is interested in dating women?   MacFarlane is so deep in the closet he managed to find the Zubaz I lost 25 years ago.

No, but making a show tune of all the actresses present who've put their tits out in the name of Hollywood "art" is pretty amusing. See "Barbershop quartet You've Got Aids song".

Meh, it was certainly not as bad as Franco and Hathaway and perhaps slightly less awkward than Jon Stewart. The worst parts were the hacked together 007 clip show and especially the musical numbers from years gone by. Seriously, what the ever-loving fark was that about?

The problem is that about 1 out of 100 of his "edgy" jokes are actually brilliant. The rest are lowest common denominator turds.
He's got talent, just not the sort that can be mass produced.

Shatner also made a similar joke last night and Seth played along at his own expense.  Also pretty funny.

The only people I saw complaining about his hosting were hollywood people online.  Everyone else seemed to think it bordered from "meh" to "pretty good."

And subby, Seth McFarlane has more money than the vast majority of the people sitting at the Oscars, including many of the people who won.   The chance he goes without a date ever is virtually non-existent.  The man is quite literally a money printing machine, and, despite the fact he can be quite abrasive, a very damned talented one.

I'll take him over the "har har cheesy joke!" hosts any day of the week.   Then again, I enjoy seeing people with incredibly massive egos squirm in their seats when the things everyone else thinks about them are said out loud. :P
