What they need to do is trade their 1st and goal page in the playbook for something better than run-throw-throw-throw-blame the refs.

Of course he's going to be traded. That would be completely toxic for the locker room.

I don't know why they bothered putting up a ruse once Kaepernick was named the starter.

Watch him get a huge contract from the Jets and then revert to his pre-Harbaugh stats.

To try and increase his trade value.   They were saying earlier that they could get a 3rd round pick for him so it will be interesting to see what they actually end up getting.   The 49ers already hold the most picks in the next draft (sans compensation picks which haven't been announced yet)

He has 2 on contract, and I would be surprised if he didn't last another 1 or 2.  3 would be amazing, but I'm sure belichick already has a seventh rounder planned this year that will be competent enough to beat the lolphins, bills, and jest twice a year.

And Geno throwing 60 yard needles yesterday while running like a WR. But no, hey, Alex Smith, I'm sure he'll be somewhat not disappointing.

Actually, I would put my money on Arizona or Minnesota. I think he'd mesh well with the Vike's offense of 'give it to AP every other down' and he'd be a much better improvement with the short to medium pass game than Ponder.

Mallet can handle that.  For giggles, check out his wiki entry for last season:

Seems low.

One NFL general manager estimated San Francisco could receive a second-round pick for Smith

Niners should hold out for a first round pick, even if it has to be in the 2014 or even 2015 draft.
If they trade with KC, they know it will still be in the top 5 picks, no matter how many years they wait..

Keep in mind they won 11 games with Matt Cassel at QB.

chatter in phoenix is that Arians wants Gino Smith in a bad way.  who knows.  i heard i think mike florio say just this morning on dan patrick that the Cards are chirping about how they want Barkley, but that's a smoke screen for us really wanting Smith.

of course there was also a lot of tlak just last week about how Arians was hoping to get the Colts' backup QB here.  i can't remember his name, but apparently Arians has (had?) interest in him here.

Minnesota doesn't want him, unless he'll be a back up.  For better or for worse, they're sticking with Ponder.

So the 49ers would trade to keep him in their division and he could be behind an O-line that lets him get steamrolled every other play?

A certain cadre of talk show host in Cleveland are all in a foaming rant on a daily basis about their desire to get Alex.  Some of it makes sense but these are the same guys who labled Shurmur as the worst coach to ever stand on a sideline who was also overwhelmed with duties and should NEVER have tried to be the o-coordinator at the same time.

So after exactly one season under "the worst play caller ever" they're ready to jettison Weeden.  And hell, maybe the kid sucks but you'd never get a fair read after a rookie season under that mess.

i didn't watch Gino much at all this year, but the guy said he's a mobile QB, which is what Arians likes (Luck, Roethlisberger) whereas Barkley is not very mobile.  who knows.

If you haven't figured out by now, Harbaugh's staff likes to keep things close to the vest.  Did they always plan on giving Kaepernick the starting job eventually?  Yes.  Did they always plan on getting something for Alex?  Yes.  Are they going to tell the press that before the deal is done?  No.

I think I'd be OK with the Bills picking Geno at #8, his combine was pretty good. Worried about him in cold-weather games though.

The 49'ers said they wouldn't "release" Smith, meaning they weren't just going to cut him loose with nothing in return....a "trade" has been a given all along.

Yeah, I know. It wouldn't make sense to send Smith to a competitive team in the same division, like the Cards.

But, you will never, ever, hear me praise the Yorks for having an abundance of sense. Bottom line: if the money and conditions are right, the Yorks would gladly shoot themselves in the foot like that.

Alex Smith is waaaay too Matt Cassel-like for the Chiefs to trade for him. I'd like to see them draft Joeckel, then trade a pick or two to move up and grab Geno Smith, just in case he turns out to be pretty good.

The new York seems to be doing a lot better than the previous morons. He's close with Eddie Debartolo, who knew how to run a football team. and he's been letting the football people make the decisions. it's been working out pretty well the last couple of years.

Alex Smith is not average.  That average QB drafted into the NFL is a bust.  An average starter is in the NFL is already WELL ABOVE average for a draft pick.  And on top of that, smith was #7 in QBR this season, so he's also WELL ABOVE average for a starting Quarterback.

Since you used QBR as "proof" we all know you don't know anything about football.

He's become efficient and doesn't cause many turnovers, but he is just terrible at actually gaining yards. He has like 3 300 yard games in his entire career. When you get 3 completions but still have to punt, you have issues

It has its merits. Passer rating isn't all it's cracked up to be either. Both are another filter to view the position through. Useful and flawed.

I think smith could be another Flacco.  With the right OC and scheme, he could flourish.  But miss one piece to that puzzle, and he'll flop hard.  That's a big risk for ANY team when you are talking 1st or 2nd round picks.  3rd round picks?  He's worth a gamble.

I think last year was his Flacco year and it was pulled out from under him by special teams. I also think Harbaugh is really good at putting his QBs in the position to succeed based on their capabilities. If Smith goes to another team I bet there'd be a significant drop off in his production. The surrounding roster does contribute a lot as well, but it was basically the same when he sucked, so no huge difference.
