This will be an unpopular opinion, and it is only a part of the problem, but maybe if we stopped using food crops for fuel (and an ineffective one at that), we would not be having some of these problems?  Yes, fossil fuels bad, but starvation worse.

This is the problem.  Price of feed I buy for our cows is way up from even 5 years ago.

Pros/Cons aside, I find something fundamentally troubling when a society begins burning food for fuel.

Here in the middle of nowhere, it's much cheaper to go in halfsies with somebody and buy an entire Hereford cow and pay the butcher (we have two butchers in town who deal with elk, deer, and cattle) to process the different cuts. You can fill your deep freeze with half a cow.

Exactly. What sort of person would want to save money? An idiot, that's who.

Heck, austerity is considered a crime equivalent to genocide according to Paul Krugman and the economic experts of FARK.

/saving money in a recession is treason
//dissent against liberals is racism
///ignorance is strength

HMS_Blinkin: But climate change is just a big liberal hoax, amirite?

Yeah, we're growing CORN FOR CAR FUEL on land that should be raising feed for cows.

Climate change: The "solution" is the problem.

ZeroCorpse: Yes, yes, we get it. All of you with big freezers and the money to spare are buying cows and having them butchered. WE GET IT.

You try fitting half a cow in an apartment, though. This is not an option for everybody.

PsyLord: That's why I buy my steaks from Costco. The prices aren't that bad. I just checked this weekend and the boneless ribeyes were $7.99/lb

100% + inflation over the last 10 years, yet the Department of Bullshiat Economic Figures trots out inflationary figures of 3% or less per year.

I eat less and less red meat as I get older, anyway. Chicken too. I'm not about to go full veggie but I'm cutting back big time.

Carth: You shouldn't be eating beef more than once a week anyway. Maybe the price increase will force people to eat a little healthier.

6/10. Will get the vegan hipsters for sure.

... So, Fox is preemptively making up some shiate about the cause being a beef shortage so that the REAL reason  - the sequester they want to let roll through causing there to be not enough gvt meat inspectors to go around - won't put the blame back on them where it belongs. ... because, Obama!

I see it clearly now.

*fistbump*

CSB: My neighbor and I were talking about our next commission last night. We're doing a hog too and went over our inventory last night to time the space issue. The farmer down the road raises some Angus too, which we've been really happy with, a little moreso than the Hereford. The price can't be beat (over the last five years it's never gone over $3# cut to order) and the quality is as high as any $100/plate steakhouse. Plus it's cool to bring the kids to the farm and pick out the steer (my wife won't do that LOL).
