To the rescuer: Good job, stud.

However, regarding the owner, I'm sort of reminded of that incident where the climber left the German Shepherd on the mountain. Other climbers came across him days later, and he was in bad shape. They organized a rescue mission to get him down, and they succeeded. The owner made no attempt to save the beast.

Follow up news report:  The shelter puts the dog down after 12 hours because an employee who knew nothing of the rescue came in for a weekend shift.

louiedog: Didn't read the article, but it was the lead story on the local news and so got caught up at the end of my DVR 3 minute recording buffer the other night.

It seemed like fire and rescue was out there trying to push the dog back to land with their boat and helicopter. This is taking place over about an hour or so I think and people show up as word spreads. A guy who already hangs out in the lake during the winter and has the gear finds out, grabs his suit and kayak, and goes to help. The dog is afraid of him but he manages to get it back to land where it takes off running. Someone with the city then manages to corner and catch the dog. He is reunited with the owner the next day.

Okay, that makes a little more sense. The way that crappy article was written, it sounded like the kayak-guy got the dog to swim to shore, dog took off running, somehow ended up way the hell out on the lake again, after which it was rescued by helicopter.

I'm sorry, but WTF happened in this article?

Step 1:  Man sees dog on ice floe
Step 2: Man gets in kayak and leads dog to shore
Step 3:  There something about a rescue van and helicopters and WTF when did that happen?!?!?
Step 4:  End of Article.

And there's no indication the dog was stuck on the ice for the week. It had been missing for a week.
