The good ol' days are sometimes not very good.

and tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems.

Now I'm goin' outside to have a nice cold beer in the shade.

Yeah, but my graduating class had people of other races, nationalities and creeds in the classes and not working in the kitchens, balancing the accounting books and cleaning the floors.

I was 3 in 69.  The only fat kid I recall from elementary school had some kind of health condition. My parents told me not to mention that she was fat because she couldn't help it. We spent our entire childhood outdoors.

WhippingBoy: Back then, people weren't fat because being fat was something to be ashamed of.

Nowadays, if you make someone feel bad about anything, you're worse than Hitler.

True that, but you CAN be polite about it. Examples:

* Your clothes look great! They're getting tighter, aren't they?
* You look well fed today!
* You look like a food expert!

The trick is to keep it positive.

Good Behavior Day: Nicotine is an appetite suppressant, so there is something to that graph.

In 1970, 30% of all households had air conditioning, almost none had a computer, and 40% had a TV.
In 2000, 80% of all households had air conditioning, 50% had a computer (40% with internet), and almost all had a TV (70% with cable).

It's easy to see why no one goes outside to play anymore.

sort of .... how many kids were smoking though?
in the end, the combination of these things certainly are all to "blame" and trivial to fix
LOL

oooooooooooooooooooo if there were an easy method to accrue internet/computer points via exercise ....
something other than will power

I never see kids outside playing anymore. I see more adults out in their yards while their kids are inside all day. We use to play nerf football and wiffle ball, build forts, climb trees, play hide n seek, ride big wheels, have lemonade stands. We were never indoors. Play all day and come home filthy with cuts and bruises torn grass stained jeans. that's when summers felt like they lasted a whole year. le sigh

why arent we outside right now?!! we got at least 20 mins before dinner. MORE than enough time for a quick game of tag or hind and seek ... or a couple laps around the block on the bike!!

60% of adult men smoked, IIRC. That means lots of cigs to borrow from just one parent.

When I look at pictures of American fifth graders today I see classes of children fatter than the fattest kid I'd ever met before high school.

I entered high school in 2000, in Southern Ontario.

I was apparently in an odd town then. Plenty of ::ahem:: 'bare floors' as it were where I lived.
And if not bare, well trimmed at very least.

/wow, just had a flashback of my first time 'all-the-way' girl.
//her father would have killed me and thrown me in the bay with concrete slabs as ankle weights for ruining his baby
///she's still a really beautiful girl and that will never change in my eyes
////we still talk and have a laugh once in a while 'cause we are both divorced and dealing with life

I'm an elementary teacher and I will say, it's shocking how obese our kiddos are today.  Like, kindergarteners with "boobs." Whenever we have a break, I ask the kids when they get back what they did. Many of them say they stayed inside and played video games.  After summer vacation, many will say it was too hot outside and they just stayed in and played video games.

I have nothing against video games; I play them myself. But fark, I get outside more than some of these kids.  They stay in their houses and eat shiat for snacks and meals.  Yet, parents like to blame the school lunches.  Not that they are the greatest but they haven't deviated much since I was in elementary in the '80s. The "fat kids" that were in my school, would be moderately chunky (maybe) today.  Crazy.

gdarb: Look at a high school yearbook for 1969.... you'd be surprised that at most schools the boys have relatively short hair.... the longer hair for guys didn't get widespread national acceptance till the '70's.....

Agreed. From what I understand (and even remember!), the 60s really didn't happen till the early 70s.

2013-02-24 07:56:00 PM
My mom and I sat down once to think about all the little things we did 30 years ago that burned calories that we don't do today. Not "send the kids out to play all day" but little things we don't even notice. Here's a few we came up with:

Getting up to change channels on the TV
Getting up to answer the phone
Dialling the phone
Manual typewriters
Handwashing dishes (or even having to scrape the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher)
Going down the hall to a co-worker because you couldn't email them.
Cars without power-assist

All those burned off a few extra calories a day. If it amounted to even a hundred extra calories a day, that would be almost a pound a month, or ten pounds a year; and in the course of a lifetime, you'd be wondering how you got so fat, even if you otherwise ate well and moderately exercised. We just don't DO as much as we used to, even if we don't notice it.

What's sad is to ponder how much things will have to change over the next 40 years in order for people at that time to believe today's high schoolers: (1) had it so good or (2) were so living in the dark ages.

worlddan: God-is-a-Taco: and these same people hadn't yet destroyed the world.

This is the irony. Who know that such a carefree generation in its childhood would go one to create one of the most perverted, greedy, and sadistic generations in the history of the world.

Difficulty: is the whole generation responsible for that, or was it only the dour, closeted bigots who were too much of an asshole to actually enjoy life who were the ones wanting to mess things up?

namatad: 3) cane sugar vs HFCS - HFCS was rapidly introduced to many processed foods and soft drinks in the U.S. from about 1975 to 1985.
(( cane is ~100 sucrose ( a disaccharide  ) whereas HFCS is made up of two monosaccharides ))

Have to blast you on this one.  The most recent studies indicate that sucrose is not significantly better for you than HFCS.  The sucrose disaccharide is broken down into fructose and glucose almost immediately after uptake.  HFCS, despite the "high" in the name, is actually only about 53-55% fructose, while sucrose is 50% fructose.  Since the fructose is the problem (because of its metabolic pathway), the extra ~4% fructose in HFCS just doesn't make enough difference to matter.

It's the refined sugar at all that is the culprit.  HFCS is a boogeyman; they're both awful for your body.  Pure glucose would be much better, but alas is much more expensive.
