I am proud to say that my senior year (67-68) I was the first groundbreaker  in our small backwoods school.  Paisley bell bottomed hip huggers.  Of course I was promptly sent home by the right wing red commie principle.

That's because everybody was dancing and farking, most food did not come from a box or drivethru, TV had 4 channels (if you were in a big city) and there were no homecomputers/cell phones/internets.

Ok, I was in high school a little after that (roughly a decade, won't get more specific), and yes, I now live in Texas which is more prone to obesity than my childhood home - but not by THAT much.

Still, the pictures are shocking when I look at a class photo from my high school and one of my kids'. Amusingly, the clothing styles are more similar than I would have expected, but damn - the stockiest kid in my 9th grade class would be at the lower bound of the current 9th grade class in the 'burbs of Houston. I am sticking every bit of money I have into diabetes maintenance outfits.

I certainly am glad ADM and Coca-Cola are making a buck, but Jesus Diabetic Christ....

I find fat people problems funny as they usually involve failing at moderation of something.

I mean, I encourage people to make that choice, and if you WANT to overindulge, then more power to you. Just don't complain about it and no, I do not want to pay for your health care.

Some of those aren't that bad. At least I don't believe I saw any polyester which would infiltrate the following decade. That stuff itches my skin.

Now that is an interesting exercise in causation/correlation.

the answer to (D) is so simple. it isnt one thing, but a couple.
1) buses - kids used to walk more and ride buses to school. none of that rides from mom BS
2) walking - some kids actually were able to walk to school or walked to the public bus stop and took that bus.
3) cane sugar vs HFCS - HFCS was rapidly introduced to many processed foods and soft drinks in the U.S. from about 1975 to 1985.
(( cane is ~100 sucrose ( a disaccharide  ) whereas HFCS is made up of two monosaccharides ))

combining these two major issues would lead to fat americans.

include the line where HFCS was introduced
include the line showing the number of kids going to HS in suburbs

then we can talk

'Tis true. Even I was thin in 1969. Then again, I was only 7...

In the late 1970s, when I was in high school, there were very few fat kids.

4) Video games didn't exist, so kids weren't inclined to sit indoors all day long.
5) If kids did decide to stay indoors and watch TV, they still didn't park themselves on the couch or floor for hours at a time, because someone had to get up to change the TV channel or adjust the volume or the rabbit ears (remote controlled TVs existed, but were pretty rare). Also, fewer channels meant fewer programs, and consequently less incentive to spend lotsa time watching TV in the first place.
6) We had awesome bikes.

I was a very young kid then, but yeah people weren't fat. Or at least in every neighborhood they're be at most one overweight family and they were subject to many predictable jokes.

It wasn't until the early '80s as I was walking around a mall that I suddenly looked around and said WTF is up with all these fat people? And it's been all downhill from there.

He wanted to see when HFCS was introduced. The graph shows when HFCS was intruduced.

Aside from the lack of obesity, I don't see any practitioners of  self-mutilation, oops, I'm being insensitive!  I mean tattoos, piercings, ginormous ear holes, carving, branding, and and FSM knows what other body "modifications" are in vogue.

These days, I see packs of teens/20somethings who are inked up and have a good 12 ounces of metal in their faces.
