It's snowing like hell outside and I have no intention of driving anywhere so I'm really getting a kick out of this.

Yes, I'm drunk. I shouldn't be driving. That's probably right of me not to drive anywhere.

Well said. You're proof that radiation is good for people.

I've been stuck on the interstate behind snowplows going half the speed limit. I'd rather get there slowly than end up in a hospital because I tired some boneheaded maneuver to get around them....especially since I'm so sure my car can drive on an unplowed interstate....oh wait...it's a 2WD coupe? Maybe I can't.

Actually, I drive better in snow than a lot of 4WD SUVs and pickups. Just ask the pickup driver trying to get himself unstuck as I crawl by. Dude, your tires are twice as big as mine, how did you get stuck? If he were honest he would say it's because he's a moran.

So you've never passed a snowplow? Look at the pictures in the article - you're telling me you'd stick behind Joe Snowplow going half the speed limit, vice use one of the other lanes, in those conditions? Don't get me wrong - the article in question is Utah, and the vehicle looks like it wouldn't handle snow very well. But to say a general statement that passing a snowplow is idiotic, I'd disagree.

I learned my lesson about (not) passing snowplows in the mid-1980s, but fortunately without any damage.  I was behind a snowplow on I-81 in upstate NY in a section is prone to crosswinds.  The highway wasn't that snowy, but there were areas where the winds had drifted snow onto the road.  There was a clear patch and I made my move to pass the plow in the left lane.  The plow then hit another drift and the crosswinds blew the plowed snow right onto my windshield.  Zero visibility.  Couldn't even see the hood of my car (a 1976 Oldsmobile Cutass).  I hit the brakes and felt the car go into a skid, so I released the brake and kept steering straight though I still couldn't see a damn thing.  When the drifted snow cleared, I was slowed down to about 20 mph, and could then see that I was less than a foot away from the concrete median barrier.  I got back on the road, and followed the plow the rest of the way to my destination.  And have never passed a plow ever again.

my guess is, apparently unlike you, they have enough common sense to realize only an idiot would realize that the area directly in front of the plow is the area with the most snow.  You know, snow.. that stuff that reduces traction when in abundance?

NotoriousFire: So you've never passed a snowplow?

Not that i remember. Snowplows are a godsend in winter conditions, so you're not in any hurry to pass them. Even if it makes you late for the gym or something.

You often have ice beneath snow, even if it's just a small amount of snow, so it's best to err on the side of caution. The bad winter drivers are the ones who take risks and think it's a test of their driving ability to go as fast as possible in winter conditions. If they survive a few spinouts they learn to respect those conditions, and love snowplows.

I like driving on freeways when there is some snow and a plow.  everyone who has no idea how to drive in the snow sit behind the plow going 35 mph while i get the other lanes to myself!  Seriously it isn't hard.  Drive in a straight line at a steady speed, leave tons of room in front of you, and start to slow some before going around curves.

Not necessarily. Sometimes it's safe to pass a snowplow, and sometimes it's not. As with many things, you have to use your judgment to determine which is which. Things are usually not black-and-white.

No shiat, that's Death Alley up there when the winter weather hits. We were driving past Ithaca on our way to Syracuse a few years back, ran into completely inexplicable whiteout conditions past Homer, cars nose-down in the drainage ditches on either side, taillights up in the air and people still strapped in the driver's seats on their cell phones calling for help. We passed a State Trooper who'd ended up in the ditch, too, before we turned back.

What stupid odyssey that trip was.

Glad it wasn't just me. As you said, it's not always safe to pass a snowplow. But to say it never is - disagree. And when there's a salt truck right behind the snowplow, I'll be damned if I'm sticking behind it as my car gets bathed in that stuff.

I know one that will purposely take off your side mirror if you are dumb enough to pass him. Another reason to stay on the freshly ploughed part of the road.

2013-02-24 09:29:30 PM
All i'm saying is safety is paramount in winter conditions, and it's safer on plowed roads than not on them. Yes, there are ways to be safer on winter roads, but it's always safest after a plow has gone ahead of you. If you want less safety, go ahead and get in front of that plow so you reach your destination a couple minutes faster. But don't pretend you're invincible, because that arrogance will bite you in the ass some day, and maybe cost you your life or those of your loved ones.

One Syracuse snowseason snow wasn't getting taken care of as well as usual.  There was a bit of speculation about it.  DPW released the fact that nearly half of the drivers that showed up for work after a storm were fired because they were already plowed.
