What's the origins of the names and themes in this vein of metal? GURPS character books?

wildcardjack: What's the origins of the names and themes in this vein of metal? GURPS character books?

most likely from HP Lovecraft, the epic of Gilgamesh or the B. Dalton version of the Necronomicon.

Its Sumerian lore wrapped in a satanic cloak for the christ rejectors. bullet belts and spikes in black candlelight under a freezing moon.

Marduk doesn't seem to realize that he's been posing as the child emperor this whole time.

Actually dug this week's tune, but this little trend of the Gojira harmonics-pick-rake needs to go away (and they need to stop doing it too).   This song isn't the worst offender, but still.

I saw them this week. Marduk killed it as usual but what really impressed me was Inquisition. They played an amazing set with only a guitarist/vocalist and a drummer. farking killer.

The only downside was having to endure Moonspell's unfortunately long set between Inquisition and Marduk. I've never been able to get into them and their set barely did anything to persuade me otherwise.

Marduk cares not about the barren wasteland of your dessicated viscera.

Wow. Dead housecall this week.

Anyway, if instrumental prog is your thing you might check out the oddly named Pomegranate Tiger. If you like the album you can buy it from their bandcamp page.

This album had some bright spots, but wasn't my favorite of theirs.

This was my favorite song on it: Temple of Decay

other good things to listen to -

Bölzer - Zeus - Seducer of Hearts (quite good; not your typical black/death metal, clean vocals even)

Vestal Claret - Bloodbath (outstanding trad/doom; Phil Swanson - Briton Rites, Hour of 13 - on vocals)

Clamfight - Green Gods of Yag (stoner/sludge - this one's instrumental)

Watchmaker - Failing Upwards(black/thrash/grind)

Inquisition rips.  The vocals are a bit..ah...tough to take.  But the music is great.  I'm speaking from the only album I have of theirs (Ominous Doctrines).

what? holy crap I love the devil's blood. Saw them last year with Watain and Behemoth. One of the best guitar oriented bands around. I've got their albums on regular rotation in my car. Such a bummer.

Panopticon's Kentucky hit bandcamp a few days ago. Everyone should go pick it up for $3. It's awesome intelligent atmospheric metal centered around Coal Mining. Really quality stuff.

I've been thinking about buying a Summoning album. I like the fantasy-scape take on BM. Recommendations?

Minas Morgul or Oath Bound, though you can't go wrong with anything Summoning does.

I love the older albums because that's what I heard first but it's more Tolkien themed black metal with keyboards. If I set my personal bias aside the best quality albums have been their last two: Oathbound and Let Mortal Heroes sing your fame. My recommendation is to check out both albums on youtube first. They've also got a new one coming out later this year.

/with my bias Dol Guldur is the best

All of their albums are streaming on youtube so you can try before you buy.

/my personal recommendation is Stronghold - the guitar parts have greater emphasis on them making for a heavier, denser album

Wanted to post this in last week's Judas Priest thread, but it got locked before I could. I lovez me some old Judas Priest. My first Priest album was Unleashed in the East, and I love the live treatment they gave songs like The Ripper, Genocide, and Tyrant. This video is apparently from the tour that album was recorded during. Les Binks is epic, and Rob's voice is awesome. What strikes me about it is the total image change Rob went through between recording and releasing the album. On stage, he's flaming, flamboyant, satin-sashed and swishy as hell. Compare that to what's on the cover. I love it.

I finally got to see Priest on the Epitaph tour where Black Label Society opened for them. All these bikers were there for BLS and then Priest came out and everyone was like "is that guy gay?" "No, Cletus that can't be true. He's in Judas Priest." Almost half their fans left before it was over.
